Is Shock Troopers 2nd Squadron all that bad?

Post by spadgy »

Or does it just get a bad wrap because it's predecessor is so damn good?

Should I buy 2nd Squadron, or avoid it like the plague?

Magic Eight-ball says: "That's a question you should ask yourself!"

Some people enjoy it, but the ugly + the weird perspective on some shots makes it a tough play for me.

Check it out on emu. My only experience with it is that I was at an arcade w/ both of them, I tried 2nd squadron and then went immediately back to the first one.

I used to play this game to death in the arcades. Never finished it with a single credit but could get really far.

Years later I started playing it in MAME...but couldn't stand the absurd amount of slowdown. Does anyone knows if this is a MAME thing or is it present in the PCB as well? I'd definitely go back and finish it if slowdown was removed.

I like it a lot, but no it's not as good as the first.

It's worth buying just to watch it cook your Neo/MVS down.

Yeah it does the same on MVS also.

I personally enjoyed the 2nd Squad, maybe even a little more than the 1st game. The graphics are OK, the action's intense, and Angel is damn busty  Also, the difficulty is a bit lower than the 1st

i think he is referring to the slowdown present in this game.....its an MVS title but the hardware can barely handle it.....

Yeah pretty much. If I haven't played my Neo in a while I use ST2 to shake all the dust off. It heats up, shakes, sputters, vibrates, but when you're done playing it's all clean again and the cobwebs are nowhere to be found.

You can overclock in some builds of MAME (MAME Plus, MAMEUIFX...). In older versions, you'd press the ` key and use arrow keys to select and change values, and in newer versions it's accessed through the tab menu under "slider controls." Increase the main CPU to something like 200% and you won't see any more slowdown.

Cheats have to be enabled for this to be available.

I used to own an MVS cart of this, paid $40 or so for it and eventually sold it for about the same. It's not bad, but personally I enjoy the first game much, much more. If you already have the first one and are looking to beef up your collection, it's not a bad choice if you can get it cheap...

Imagine if we could hear your voice! :P

Shock Troopers 1 is far superior to the Donkey Kong pre-rendered sequel, which lacks the dirty soundtrack, anime graphics, tight stage design and all the character.
There is a nifty portrait of an anime chick with huge knockers and a machine gun though, which does save it slightly.

I put that on especially for you Skykid.

So £80 for a full and very mint kit with matching serials, all arts and everything right down to the cart baggy is a bit steep?

Lol, you've gone MVS collecting nuts!

I don't know what ST2 is worth on MVS as a kit, but as a game I wouldn't bother paying that much.

Not nuts yet - I've got something like six or seven carts and no kits. I'm just hankering for a full minty kit since I sold by Ibara kit (everything else I own is a bare PCB).

Time for me to decide how much I want it!

"SALLY OUT!"

Another big loss from the original game is the beefy sound effects. Every guy you kill in 2nd Squadron just sounds like he's stubbed his toe.

Unfortunately Angel is the worst character out of the bunch. Lulu is the best but she looks like a boy.

most people seem to like it but find the first better. BBH (pro Shock Troopers guy) is the same way.

game seems to flaunt a scoring system moreso than the first game.

Sorry to derail your thread on bountiful babylons but it's also worth noting that the sound track in 2nd Squadron is a complete sham after mind-blowing standard of the first game.
