Tek-One - Broken String (yet to be released on HENCH Records)
I'm pretty new to dub-step music, so I can't speak for the genre as a whole, but Tek-One has been rocking my brains out for the last few days. Check out this track of theirs: Bug

Re: current favorite albums
Various Merzbow/Masami Akita works have been making me go blissfully insane the past couple of days.
Masami Akita & Russell Haswell - Satanstornade (Insanely noisy rhythmic pseudo-pop)
Maldoror - She (A noisy mess, Masami Akita and Mike Patton of Faith No More fame)
Merzbow - Pulse Demon (A noise masterpiece. Oxymoron?)
Anyone have any suggestions of any more Merzbow/Akita works I should listen to?
I really dig Frog, Merzbird, Merzbeat, Frog+, any of his Boris collaborations, his Sonic Youth collaboration was pretty interesting. Gimme some recommendations!

Re: current favorite albums
His other releases on Relapse are good and are actually available. I'd suggest Rainbow Electronics, Akasha Gulva and Noisembryo as well. I have a few of his recent 13 month Japanese bird series but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to them yet. There's also a remix of Discordance Axis' Inalienable Dreamless album floating around on the internet.
Masonna - Frequency LSD

Re: current favorite albums
Thoroughly enjoying the new Sigh album, Scenes From Hell. It's very much a continuation of the Hangman's Hymn style, which I suppose makes it unique among Sigh albums in that it's the only one that doesn't represent a major change in direction, but clearly they had more than enough ideas up their sleeves to make it a worthwhile venture. Highlights for me, so far, are the opening track and The Red Funeral, though it's all strong stuff. The only thing I haven't quite got my head around yet is the way the drums are mixed; they sound like someone twatting a collection of Pringles tubes half a mile away.

Yeah, it is an amazing album. I've heard a little bit off the "Live Salvage" albums, but not much. I love most of Masami Akita's collabs, especially this one and all of his Boris collabs, which brings me to:MX7 wrote:I love this one so muchtommyb wrote:

He did a couple of live albums called 'Live Salvage' vol 1 and 2 which are absolutely amazing. And he's playing in my city (supporting Autechre :O :O ) in just a few weeks
Boris w/ Merzbow - Rock Dream
Boris w/ Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave
Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar
Re: current favorite albums
Boris' Japanese Heavy Rock Hits series is pretty good, minus Vol. 2. Vol. 4 is awesome, though.

New Built to Spill is a real disappointment, since I rather liked their last album, You in Reverse. This new one is just plain dull.

Re: current favorite albums
Not a massive fan of most dubstep, a lot of its very samey imo. Do like Untold though, check out Sweat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBgH1A1QNm8
Not really 'pure' dubstep, but as I say imo thats a good thing!

Currently revsiting Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye. There's something new to discover, a new emotion to uncover with every subsequent listen. I love it!

Re: current favorite albums
I need to listen to more Kayo Dot. I loved Maudlin of the Well, and Tartar Lamb is awesome. Never got into Kayo Dot though. I heard Blue Lambency Downward wasn't very good.CIT wrote:Currently revsiting Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye. There's something new to discover, a new emotion to uncover with every subsequent listen. Six Organs of Admittance - Luminous Night
Beautiful psyche folk with a strong hint of apocalypse. Follows on well from 2007's superb Shelter From The Ash.

Re: current favorite albums
Most people tell me dubstep has kind of passed; I'm here in the US so I don't know first-hand, but I think it's safe to say the internet is making dance scenes get too big too fast, then everyone's kind of looking at each other. The truly good dubstep stuff is more just an extension of bassline and garage anyways. I just need wob wob and pum pum and chicka clack. Sorry if I sound like a yank.

I don't think its as bad as some people made it out to be, but its very meandering and never builds up to the same levels of intensity as the previous two albums.tommyb wrote:I need to listen to more Kayo Dot. So yeah, I recommend starting with Choirs of the Eye.
I heard some unreleased MotW stuff will come out soon.

I actually though Blue Lambency Downward was the more digestible of the Kayo Dot releases, but I started with that one so I dunno.CIT wrote:I don't think its as bad as some people made it out to be, but its very meandering and never builds up to the same levels of intensity as the previous two albums.tommyb wrote:I need to listen to more Kayo Dot. MotW released Part the Second a few months ago and I haven't seen any more news from them, so you got a link for that info? I'm not particularly impressed with their new shit, I fucking loved the intros to the second and third tracks but once they started making fucking cat noises in the middle of the songs I threw up my lunch. They should drop the astro-philosophical pretensions and write straight rock music with beautiful melodies and bangable heavy parts--it won't be good metal, but it'll at least be entertaining, like some of their old material.
Been listening to some of my older (as in 90's, lol) shit recently, remembered how great some of these old albums were:
Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding (I started rereading Blake again and it forced me back to this album, shit's better than a lot of maiden)
Darthrone - Under a Funeral Moon (Forgot how damn evil this cd is. Also has the second best name ever for a metal album)

Ahh the 13th Floor Elevators - classic. I love their cover of "It's all over now baby blue" by Dylan. Just found my buried copy of BRAP(Back and Forth Vol. 3) by Skinny Puppy. Been all I've been listening to for the past few days. So damn good.

Junius - The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist
This album is amazing. Best album I've heard in a long, long time. It really makes me want Circle Takes the Square to actually do something, but I doubt that will ever happen. Ritual of Names has been announced for a couple years now, and then they go and announce Decompositions before we even hear anything from Ritual of Names. Fuck them.
Anyway, go listen to Junius' new full length.

I know man, nobody respects the later Maiden, but man, Brave new world...
The first four songs + the last two. That's an EP. A FUCKING GREAT EP. I know the real metal fans write off everything after powerslave. You gotta be gay to like Brave New World, right?
I keep coming back to this album and goin' homo for it. Melodies are really strong as well as the lyrics. Sorry if it aint metal enough for you, it's still good music.
