Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
I am not sure if this is ok to talk about this on here but since I see so much talk on patching PS2 ISOs for low res I assume it's ok.
I have a copy of earthworm jim on sega CD (original btw) that I'd like to play on my mega CD. I have heard that you can patch a CD's ISO to play on different regions as far as sega/mega CDs go.
My problem is I haven't found anything stating that it can patch the ISO to go from USA to Jpn.... does anyone know of a way to do this?

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
Google "SCDconv", v2.50 is the latest IIRC
EDIT: rats, nevermind - I just checked and it really looks like it's still not possible to convert EU & NA region code to JP with SCDconv (apparently their boot blocks work differently) -_-
EDIT2: I have a version of convSCD which supposedly can convert US to JP sitting around here... but I dunno how compatibility is on this one - haven't used it in ages.

Supposedly, ConvSCD is better than SCDConv, and can convert in all directions.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

What would folks advise me to use for ripping the game?

Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
OK... so I ripped it with cdwin... but it gave me a bin cue. I needed an ISO, so I converted that to ISO. I burned it and it worked accept the audio.
I noticed the original comes up with the audio tracks when put in the sega cd.... this burn does not. The game works but with no audio. Any ideas?
Is there some sort of settings i should have set in disc juggler when burning or was it to do with the ripping process?

no one here that can help me out with this a little more?

I don't know about discjuggler but to locate the problem you could check the .cue's contents with a text editor: if the audio tracks are properly listed it's all good otherwise the next step would be to either mess with cdrwin's settings to get a proper cue or doing it the old fashioned way and rip the .iso along with separate .wav for audio and generate a cue-file either by hand or with sega cue makerStrider77 wrote:no one here that can help me out with this a little more?
EDIT: Hmm... I should learn to read - Here we have the problem:
I needed an ISO, so I converted that to ISO

If you need an ISO the correct way to do thiss in cdrwin is to use the extract tracks/audio option and pick all tracks in the track selection field(little pad with circled numbers, different colors are different data-types like data, audio, etc... don't remember the color coding off the top of my head now...).

CDRWin does not support modern writers, but it's still a great ripping tool. You can burn the images by mounting them (use DaemonTools) and then making a on-the-fly copy using CloneCD (choose game CD). 100% bit-perfect copy. Probably the only combination of ripping/mounting/burning setup which will even re-create really weird CD layouts (non-standard gaps as one some PC Engine games...)
EDIT: nevermind, overread that you need the ISO for patching. Use MagicISO for ripping. It's what I use to rip PS2 games to patch them to 240p/480p. Works nicely.

Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
make sure youre using high-quality CDR also. FYI, Verbatim is not quality media. Something like Sony or Taiyo Yuden, are best as they dont read inferior discs too well, which causes read errors/glitches which may be why you have no audio. Also check youve converted any .mp3 files to .wav before you burn.
also, for ripping and burning, i use Clone CD. CDRWin is a pain in the arse to use. Discjuggler is also pretty good. another program you could try is TurboRip (its designed for PCE/TGFX CD games but it still works for MCD i believe).
if you have a cue problem, you can use a tool called Sega Cue Maker to make a correct cue file from your image file.

I politely but also strongly disagree with you here - Verbatim and Tayo Yuden is what I'm using since 1997 and I have far less(if at all) coasters than with any other brand. Sony is a mixed bag and it highly depends from what manufacturer sony's rohlings come from.DC906270 wrote:Verbatim is not quality media.

Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
Apparently theyve lowered the quality of the dye they use in Verbatim CDR
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
I've heard good things about Verbatim over the last decade but I know back in the floppy disk days, they were garbage. About 1/5 of their disks died on me after building up corrupt sectors, which is an absurd rate. That's why they were being discounted to no end at that time, the Goldstar of media if you will. I think Taiyo Yuden and the various brands it's packaged as is still the only option for important storage.
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
This is getting really confusing... let me start fresh.
This patcher only patches the ISO (the data part of the CD). However there are audio tracks as well.
Now I can rip the whole CD and wind up with a bin and cue with a million different programs. I can extract the ISO and patch it.
My biggest issue is.... how can I take this patched iso and replace the old one with it in the original bin and cue that I ripped?
OR how can I create a new image with this patched ISO and tack on the audio tracks correctly?
My CDRs are fine.... I burned the patched ISO with the impression that it had the audio tracks on it. The game worked with no audio. So I am pretty sure that the audio tracks were never burned onto that disc to start. I was under the impression that creating a ISO would extract the audio tracks along with the data track and now I know this is not the case.

Update.... got it to work. Sega Cue Maker did the trick, that's what I needed. Thanks guys for the help.

Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
You can also use ISOBuster or MagicIso to copy the entire CD as ISO, then feed it to the converter, btw.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
yeh, if you rip the whole cd as an iso it will include the audio in the iso as well. sounds like you did it the most complicated way!
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
You can't rip a whole mixed-mode CD "as an ISO". An ISO is an image of a data track. If you rip a whole mixed-mode CD as a single image, it's going to be some other format.
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
I recall doing so with Night Striker for the SCD.

Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
hmm, sure? well, maybe i should have said image instead. an iso is just an pc image of an entire disc AFAIK. you can have a dvd iso, a psp iso.. (these contain audio)You can't rip a whole mixed-mode CD "as an ISO".
Re: Playing US Sega CDs on a Jpn. Mega CD via ISO
ISO images are filesystem images (named for the ISO 9660 filesystem, though nowadays the extension is often used for UDF and hybrid ISO/UDF images as well). They can contain audio files, but they can't contain CDDA tracks.DC906270 wrote:hmm, sure? well, an img file can certainly be converted to a single iso file. an iso is just an pc image of an entire disc AFAIK. you can have a cd iso, a dvd iso, a psp iso.. Many so-called "ISO" files are actually .BIN (or equivalent). Under the right circumstances, some burning software can figure this out and burn a more-or-less "correct" disc without the corresponding cuesheet.
