Shmups for 3DO

Post by CIT »

I'm getting a 3DO soon (...no, really, I have good reasons, the two Policenauts games) so I was wondering if there are any traditional shooters for this system. I'm assuming it's all FMV cack like Starblade, but in the odd chance there is one, please let me know. :)

I don't remember there being any traditional shooters, but there were 3D shooters like Total Eclipse, and Star Control had a shooter element to it.

I sold my 3DO when the Saturn was released in Japan, and the only truly worthwhile games I remember were The Need for Speed, Return Fire, Samurai Shodown, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, FIFA Soccer, and Road Rash.

I had total eclipse a long time ago...slow, repetitive, boring.

I did a lot of research on the 3DO a while back, and there are absolutely NO shmups for this console. Even the CD-i got some, but not the 3DO.

OT, how are the Saturn and PS1 Policenauts ports? Looks like a pretty fun game! :D'

EDIT: Oh man, all the ports of this game are in Japanese! :(

Yeah, I'm not sure how text-based this game is exactly, but I remember deciding some years back that it was pointless to get it.

Yes, Policenauts, like it's spiritual prequel, Snatcher, is worthless unless you can speak japanese.

At least Snatcher got an english version for the Sega-CD, and the MSX version has been translated by fans.

But no luck for Policenauts so far.

Policenauts is a digital comic, like Snatcher. It's extremely text heavy. You even need to understand medical Japanese as it's quite heavy in that kind of terminology. Take the long-windedness of Metal Gear Solid, then remove the fact that having to pay voice-actors kept the script "short"; that's Policenauts dialog.

Hmm, just as I thought. 3DO really IS a totally lame system. But I'm still gonna get one, also cuz I just like the design of the Panasonic FZ-10.

As for Policenauts. I have the PS1 port, but not having played the original I can't tell you what the differences are. It really is very text heavy, and I have to look up words in my electronic dictionary constantly (still playing it), but it's good practice.
Just steer clear of the PS1 and SS versions of Snatcher, they added some terrible pre-rendered graphics that really don't fit with the rest of the game.

As a former 3DO owner, I have some things I want to tell you.

1. 3DO doesn't have any shooters.
2. FZ-10 doesn't have a fan inside the system, so that's why I got a FZ-1.
3. Stay far away from the Goldstar units!
4. The Panasonic 3DO systems are region free and no copying protection (you can play MOST imports on a US 3DO, and play backups without no mod-chip).
5. Most of the games for the 3DO just plain out fucking sucks. For 1 good game, they are 10 bad games. Some good games are Return Fire, Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown (well, the port of the game from the arcade is alright, but it isn't great), and Shockwave.
6. Too many FMV games (I hate those games)
7. When you get the 3DO, try to find the Game Guru. Because the Game Guru can compress your game saves (when you are playing sport games, and RPGs, you will need this!), and also act like a game shark.
8. I used to own Policenauts for the 3DO, it's great! The only problem is that the game is Japanese and I can't beat it!

I hope this helps. :)

Cool, thanks for the tips, although...

...what exactly does this mean? When you play for more than an hour the system goes up in flames or something?

I wasn't really planning on getting an FZ-1 since it's a) more expensive, b) bigger and heavier, c) which means shipping will cost more, and d) looks kind of dumb (like a VCR, that is). I figure I won't be spending that much time with it anyway.

On ebay, they are many FZ-1 models (just to let you know). You are right on many points, the VCR is a hugh 100%! I perfer systems with fans cause, I don't know why. I thought systems with fans last longer.

To be honest, I own a Goldstar 3DO and I am quite happy. Granted, the traditiional shooter linup is non-existant, but there are a plethora of titles that are worth owning, and many are quite cheap.

May I suggest the following:

1. Star Fighter
2. Syndicate
3. Foes of Ali
4. Star Control 2
5. Any Ad+D title

The reason why I told people to say away from the Goldstar 3DOs are: In the long run, the CD Drive will stop working and you have to fix it yourself.
Also, early Goldstar 3DO models won't play some games like The Hoard, cause of RAM problems inside the hardware.

The only shooty type games I played were Total eclipse and Shock wave.

Return fire is kinda shooty too.

But my best favourite game is definately Road rash.

What do you mean by "Ad+D" title??

And have you ever played Phoenix 3? That one looks like a great borderliner/space shooter.

I did some research on Star Fighter, and it sounds really cool! I also found out that Lucas Arts sued 3DO over usage of the name; morons, it's not like Lucas doesn't have enough cash! :?

Actually, Slam N Jam is a very cool arcade basketball game. It seems like a rip of Run N Gun from the arcades. Plus, Van Earl Wright does the voice. Good game.

By AD&D, I mean Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. There were two Ad&D titles: Slayer and the marginally superior Deathkeep. I've never played Phoenix 3, so perhaps I should look into it!

Star Fighter is a decent game and the closest to a shooter in my opinion, but be prepared for the some of the most corny music ever in a videogame. The game featured completely destructable landscapes. Don't like the hill that is obstructing your primary target? Then blast the hill top down until you get the perfect view! I pulled it out again a few months ago, and it holds up relatively well. You can also pick up a copy of it for the Playstation.

And speaking of 3DO titles, I forgot to mention Road Rash. Now that had a great Seattle grunge-era soundtrack, featuring Soundgarden and Paw. It even has a few videos!

The only StarFighter game I could find for the PS1 is called "StarFighter 3000", are you certain it's the same game?

Yes! Several, actually! This was surprising to me too! At any rate, the CD-i shmup titles I know of are: Tetsuo Gaiden, Steel Machine, and Alien Gate.

Don't know too much about the latter two, but Tetsuo Gaiden is kind of like a Galaga-type shmup, that has power ups and bosses!

I posted a link to a video of Tetsuo Gaiden, but unfortunately it doesn't seemt to be working Wish I could find another one, as well as some videos of Alien Gate and Steel Machine.

Surely return fire is the nearest to a shmup.

Its 2D, overhead view, scroll in any direction and you shoot bombs and bullets.

Also has a very good soundtrack (flight of the bumble bee etc).
