Does anyone else think going from bullet hell back to..

Post by rockyraccoon5 »

something more normal can be disorienting? It's like you try to squeeze in between bullets, fooling yourself the hitbox is going to let you make it through, but once you die you're like, oh right, I can't do that. Has anyone else made this mistake before?

Yeah going from DDP DF to Tatsugin II is one of the most disorientating arcade experiences you can have but it does show what variety we have in the Shmups genre.

I used to find that playing a faster bullet hell before playing a slightly slower one was a good warm up, the slower one seemed a little easier in comparison. I used to do this with Mushimhe-sama and then Progear in the arcade.

I grow up playing the classic games, and I always play them from time to time, so , to me at least, I can always easily go from one "genre" to the other without much difficulty.

Of course, if you *just* had a long session of Mushihimesama, then decide to go play some Truxton, it will feel weird for a few minutes.

It's like when you play Pro Evolution Soccer for hours and then switch to Fifa. It really feels weird.

Hahaha
This happened to me a few weeks ago.
After playing some straight hours of Super Thunder Blade, the speed of Raiden's ship seemed to have boosted a great deal right afterwards. :)

I think so. I've made this mistake on Dragon Saber - trying to go between 2 bullets rather than around them. This would've been fine in Mushi Futari or DOJ, but it counts as damage in DS.

This is almost like going from Razing Storm to Crisis Zone. Razing Storm allows you to cancel an enemy soldier's Crisis Sighting (your shot will stagger him, throwing off his aim) when he is aiming at you and ready to shoot. Attempt the same thing in Crisis Zone and you WILL be hit for sure - in which case the enemy has already fired and your only recourse is to get the shield up.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I never had any problems with the second boss in Twin Cobra until I started to play games with forgiving hitbox. But otherwise, not so much.

Not really bullet hell, but after Gradius V I found the collision detection in Sexy Parodius and Gradius Gaiden being rather ruthless. Now I adapt quickly to such circumstances.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Ha ha, it's true. I find it's better to stick a quid in Tatsujin 2 then play DFK. Because of the disparity in the hitbox size, you become more aware of your entire ship, and play in a more cautious fashion. Also, after stooping over a cruddy stand up cabinet, you can slump down on a comfy seat to play DFK, and the whole experience is very relaxing :D

I should introduce my friends who have only played bullet hell shooters to a little Truxton II or Raiden. "Ha, a shooter that isn't danmaku. How hard could that possibly be?"

It's extremely disorientating for verts, namely because I never got into non bullet-hell vert games. Sit me down in front of anything pre-DonPachi, and I'll totally suck, no matter how long I play. Mostly because I don't think I need to move because a bullet would barely graze my ship in a bullet hell game, but is horrible, horrible death elsewhere.

On the other hand, with horis, my mind is in a different mindset [grew up with R-Type and Gradius and some Genesis shmup I don't remember the name now, and still love R-Type at least...], and I don't try to squeeze through whatever gap I see, going around like I should.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
