The semi-official 80s arcade shmups highscore competition.

Post by nimitz »

The player with highest score on the current game that remains champion for 2 days gets to pick the next game we will be playing.
If the "winner" doesn't pick a game 24 hours after he won, the 2nd best score gets to choose and so on.

Without further ado, the first shmup is:

Flying Shark, Toaplan, 1987
Image

Please, pick shmups that were released between 1980 and 1989, that you consider "fun" and that are not too easy to marathon.

the submitted high score cannot be an "old" score, it should be done during the competition. the scores are done using default board settings.

b.t.w.Please post your score, even if you are not #1 and feel free to post score for a game that has been played in the past days/weeks I will keep tables of the the 10 scores.

Tip: the stage 3 battleship cannot be destroyed until the center part of it leaves the bottom of the screen and starts back up the screen. Points will keep accumulating each time the center part is hit until it actually leaves the bottom of the screen, however.

Oh yeah, and what configuration is being used to play Sky Shark/Flying Shark, if one does not have access to the actual arcade machine?

This is a good thread idea, but it might work better if it was something like 5-7 days elapsed before changing games instead of 2 days. Folks might be busy so wouldn't even get an opportunity to run MAME until the weekend or something.

Awesome thread that I missed. I'm late to the party but I'm straight on the dancefloor. So are we still on flying shark?

What be the deadline?

As per the original post, you can keep submitting scores for a game even after the competition moves on to a new one.

I couldn't get sxevious to work, so let's get this back in gear and pick a new game, eh? I'll put up a score if I can play it. I'll also update the scores in post 4 until nimitz returns.

This slow speed is more like it, though. 80s arcade shooter of the month!

Sorry, I was going to suggest a game but got sidetracked. Xevious is a little lame, I guess? :) Zaxxon, sure, I'll give it a shot.

Nah, I just couldn't get it to work - it looks like it should work, but also didn't feel like downloading new/old versions of MAME if that's the issue.

I hate Zaxxon slightly less now. Thanks, dragoforce. Finally shot down 20 ships, satisfied.

This game doesn't have sound? Is it that old? What a GRAAANDPA!

I spent too much time playing the Colecovision Adam port of Zaxxon back in the day, but this arcade version is faster & much more difficult. At least now I get to use an arcade stick instead of a paddle controller! My current hi-score after a 15 minute session...

Zaxxon definitely has sound effects, it just doesn't have background music. This was true for the actual arcade machines (not sure if any are in actual existence anymore) and remains true for the Digital Eclipse emulated version that is an extra on the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2.

I'll try a different build of MAME, then? Mame Plus 0.133 didn't have SFX.

You will need to download the MAME sample pack for the Zaxxon sounds. You might have to tick the "use samples" option, as these sounds aren't emulated in MAME but can be derived from samples.

That's correct.

A little harder, kicking Xevious' pace up to kinda slow. Don't bomb the weird shape on the ground, since it sets the score to zero. Awesome.
