Awesome. Gotta say that I've disagreed with you guys on many points in previous podcasts, but I'll definitely give this one a spin.

Re: Rambling shmups talk
Pretty good listen so far, but you really need to let the inhuman sadistic evil of Raizing games seep into your heart.

Re: Rambling shmups talk
ive just finished listening to it, youve got a pritty good podcast there. Its got a good banter between you 2. Ive subbed it and put links to it aswell.
Is there any other shmups podcasts out there? what im idealy after is 2 or more ppl descussing shmups in a detailed way. Like delving into the scoring mechanics of a certain game or descussing their viewpoint on chaining, cheap deaths etc, basically the more indepth topics that come up on this forum. Ive yet to listen to anything like this for shmups which is a shame imo.

Re: Rambling shmups talk
unfortunately, i dont know of any either. sean and i typically delve into pretty esoteric aspects of games...which, if you continue listening to the rest of the shmup podcast, you'll find plenty of examples of. i am not the best shmup player ever...but when new releases come out, i try to talk about them in as much detail as possible---particularly indie developed shmups, as they're typically free and drop more often than big name products. the more well-known vg podcasts aren't very hardcore...as elitist as that sounds, and as undefinable as it isTrevHead (TVR) wrote:ive just finished listening to it, youve got a pritty good podcast there. Re: Rambling shmups talk
Sure ive nothing wrong with podcast / blogs which talk about shmups in a more general sense. If its intresing (which your podcast from what ive heard so far is) then im happy that the topic is about shmups since there are so few podcasts or good blogs that talk about it
Re: Rambling shmups talk
Enjoyed this. You covered a lot of different things in mostly chronological order - are the following two continuing with recent releases, or will you be skipping around?
Re: Rambling shmups talk
it continues in mostly chronological order for the next part, and in the third one we talk about where the genre is headed and where we'd like to see it go

Re: Rambling shmups talk
I don't usually listen to podcasts and such, but I couldn't resist the prospect of hearing someone talk about shmups for an hour and a half straight - looking forward to the next part.
Re: Rambling shmups talk
A nice surprise this week with a shmup only podcast.
I'm glad to hear that one of you is a big fan of Layer Section. It's definitely my favorite Saturn shooter. I've never got a chance to play Raystorm yet. I'm just gonna wait for the HD release.
You two got me into wanting to buy Silpheed and Blazing Lazers now.
I have a feeling you two are going to be discussing G.rev in the next part.

And Treasure.

Re: Rambling shmups talk
Cool thing, I hope you give more time for talking about Raizing/Yagawa games in the next parts because there's quite a bit to talk about technically there.
Where are the other parts, anyway?

Re: Rambling shmups talk
part 2 is up now...sadly, not much Raizing love
its just a result of personal preference---its by no means an ULTRA THOROUGH look into the genre
still, hope you all enjoy it

ps, i refer to treasure as Cave by mistake, when discussing the parade of bosses that is radiant silvergun

Re: Rambling shmups talk
I really enjoyed the second part. It was full of love for great games.
Too little Raizing though, and you never mentioned the fish-theme as one of the most awesome things about Daruis.

Why did you have to call Ikaruga the Beautiful Masterpiece of the shmup genre? Christ's sake, what is it with even small-scale gaming media and that piece of shit?

Re: Rambling shmups talk
The line "You either do or you don't see the beauty in something that is sorrowful" does not belong in a shmup podcast

I like how you praised the graphics in Mars Matrix. Everyone says it's ugly.

Absolutley. The presentation is just incredible, and the way it ties into the gameplay is just fantastic.kid aphex wrote:gameplay aside, ikaruga, to me, is transcendental
The game is a masterpiece, but that doesn't mean that it's the pinnacle of the genre at all. The gameplay and scoring system is so tight and well thought out that it borders on the puzzle genre, making it even more niched than shmups in general.
Re: Rambling shmups talk
the only podcasts (regularly) i listen to are 'rebel fm' and 'mobcast'. on occasion i also listen to '4guys1up', 'a life well wasted' as well as 'gamers with jobs' (although i don't like it as much as i used to).kid aphex wrote:unfortunately, i dont know of any either. sean and i typically delve into pretty esoteric aspects of games...which, if you continue listening to the rest of the shmup podcast, you'll find plenty of examples of. i am not the best shmup player ever...but when new releases come out, i try to talk about them in as much detail as possible---particularly indie developed shmups, as they're typically free and drop more often than big name products. the more well-known vg podcasts aren't very hardcore...as elitist as that sounds, and as undefinable as it isTrevHead (TVR) wrote:ive just finished listening to it, youve got a pritty good podcast there. what tips would you give to someone who wants to put out a SOLO podcast as opposed to having a group of mates over?

You don't get to spout a ridiculous string of pseudo-philosophical gibberish about the hilariously pretentious, juvenile, and cliched aesthetics of A GAME and then say "Opinions, relax!"kid aphex wrote:if a game, as art, touches me emotionally ... i've got to say something about itcaptpain wrote:Why did you have to call Ikaruga the Beautiful Masterpiece of the shmup genre? And gameplay aside? Gameplay aside????? In a shmup???
Re: Rambling shmups talk
were my opinions "pseudo-philosophical" because we were discussing "games"?You don't get to spout a ridiculous string of pseudo-philosophical gibberish about the hilariously pretentious, juvenile, and cliched aesthetics of A GAME and then say "Opinions, relax!"

or just "pseudo-philosophical" in general?
could you define "pseudo-philosophical" or are you just regurgitating a cliched meme because of its particularly venomous connotations?
i'm sort of interested in what you feel makes the game's aesthetics "pretentious, juvenile, and cliched",
though im fairly confident you're ignorant of at least some aspect of the game's history/design/culture of origin
