The US version retailed for 40 when it first came out, if memory serves...also worth considering is that it came with a soundtrack CD. Who knows what pricing strategy Aksys will go with, though...just gonna hafta wait and see.

Just the fact that (from the press release it seems like) the Black Label will be included is a pretty big bonus, considering it was an additional 1200 points ($15 US) for the Japanese DLC.

$40 for the disc would be great. Anything else like a bonus CD soundtrack would be gravy for me.

I have the feeling that Death Smiles won't be the only Cave game to be localized. I am sure that Espgaluda II will foilow it.
I hope so :)

I think you are reading way too much into that press release. The MBL being mentioned could just mean that it will be localized as well.

This was my thought as well. MBL has extra text to translate for playing as Sakura. Wait and see I guess.

I would guess $30 or $40 but the soaring yen means that's less money to Cave since they operate in Yen. Probably cheaper is smarter if they're wanting to make a name for themselves abroad. Of course, w/ this game that name is "borderline pederast".

Seriously, I don't think Cave realizes the "Oily otaku pedo" market doesn't really exist over here.

Technically pederast isn't the right term, but yeah, that appeal is not at all universal like they might be hoping.

Would Cave make money per US sale or would the bulk of it be the licensing cost that Aksys paid them?

im more inclined to say that they get the licensing money and that's it ... (maybe some royalties too?).

I would hope the deal includes royalties. They'd be fools not to.

Looks like this game is getting a bit of attention from more mainstream gaming sites. Maybe the niche will expand a bit?

From gamespot
and even awards an achievement for using 50 continues, which many people have reported earning in their first run.
LOL, way to scare people away... they could have said, Deathsmiles is a great game for people to enter the world of Bullet Hell because it is Cave's easiest game and you can adjust the difficulty before each stage.

Any bets on whether they change any art? I'm looking at you bathtub scene :o

How the hell do you even accomplish that? These guys could end up using 50 continues in DOJ no bullet mode.

Yeah, its getting attention, but just take a look at the kind of attention its getting.

"Not my cup of tea but this is probably great news for the 34 people out there that play Japanese 2D shooters."

"This looks... really lame. "

"Not into the bullet hell thing"

"I hope it releases on PS3"

This is the future I see for shmups in America. Just as its always been since the late 90s.

I like how there are about 2 people interested in the game at IGN's "shmup board".

Some sort of phony badass puts the game at lvl999 for each stage and gets annihilated? Given the "harder than battletoads" statement, I think there might be some exaggeration involved.

Quote from IGN:

Death Smiles 2
One of our favorite games of TGS couldn't be found on the show floor -- we had to go to Japanese arcades. Death Smiles II is a 2D shooter from Cave, a master of the genre (they did Donpatchi and Dodonpatchi back in the day). It combines two of our favorite things: cute anime girls and horror clichés. Bullets fill the screen while giant bosses chase after you. Death Smiles II is also available on Xbox 360 in Japan, but God is mad at America for some reason and won't bring any Japanese shooters over here.

This is why I never read gaming sites. They are clueless.

As for licensing fees, I'm sure Cave probably gets a minimum guarantee, and the X dollars per unit sold.

He was claiming that because the game is getting "attention" on US gaming sites that people might accept it more and "expand the niche." With the kind of comments people are making, it shows that this exposure changes nothing about the current situation of US/EU gamers' view of 2D shmups. That's my point. What was your point in questioning it? I thought it was pretty obvious. And like the previous guy said, look at reviews of shmups from these same sites just a few weeks prior.

Video killed the radio star.

Shmups are not mainstream anymore... People don't put VHS tapes in Blu ray players.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
