Just across this press release (via Kotaku). http://game.snkplaymore.co.jp/press_rel ... hp?num=233
Apparently SNK is putting out a bullet hell shooter using the King of Fighters characters. The main page for the game itself (linked at the bottom of the press release) is http://game.snkplaymore.co.jp/official/kof-skystage/ There are some short gameplay/tutorial movies to check out if you hit the 'movie' link.
Not sure if this is a "now available" or "available soon" release, as I can't read it. But from the movies, it looks like it's pretty much a done game.
The game page says this runs on Taito Type X, and the game itself seems very reminiscent to me of the Castle of Shikigami series, being a vertical shooter with a similar game play styling. It looks like the game uses 3 buttons and there appears to be some 'charge up' attacks in addition to your normal attacks, as well as some sort of pvp style competition when two people are playing. I see some medals appearing, then falling down the screen when enemies are killed, but the 'suck in' range seems very short. There are six playable characters, including Athena, Mai and Terry. (3 guys, and 3 gals)
Although the game looks very polished and colorful, to me the stages seemed kind of bland and the basic enemies are that kind of abstract shape/bug/ship look that Shikigami used a lot of too. The bullet patterns on average seem less dense, but I didn't see any artificial slowdown either when the screen fills up and the patterns look asthetically pleasing. I can see how if this is an 'easier' shmup that the lower difficulty could work in favor of crossing over regular 'fighter' game players who may not play the 'harder' bullet hell games.
I honestly see any sort of US release as doubtful, maybe a download release on the consoles at best. Of course, if the US release of Deathsmiles does well, that might be enough to get some other games released as well...
