Who/what is he? He must be pretty popular, I'm somewhat embarrassed that I don't know who/what he/she/it is.

Tiki from The New Zealand Story, a fun Taito platformer that's cute, but it bites back (not an easy game, but enjoyable to all hell). Can't recommend it enough, Taito knew how to make cute platformers that kicked ass.

Brilliant game

Cute, colourful, every enemy quite unique in style and attack, loads of different weapons, powerups and secrets, and not an easy challenge.

Plus if you're playing the arcade release, there are three distinctly different versions to master...

Every now and then Tiki makes a cameo at the end of Liquid Kids before the credits roll as Hipopo is getting on the pelican out of the fire devils collapsing castle. He is riding a balloon in the cameo.

The game's on one of the Taito Memories compilations (and the US "Legends" ones too, IIRC) if you want to try it out, though I forget precisely which volume has it offhand.

I have Taito Legends 2, and I would have noticed if this game was on it. It must be on Legends 1.

Ever since I saw the opening, I've wondered which of the kiwis is Tiki in the scene were the evil seal / walrus captures all the other Kiwis. Is he the one taking a smoke?

Haven't seen them yet but the Heaven levels are probably one of the more amazing ideas put in a platform game so far. Also a cool maze-like structure to the levels, lots of secrets - though a bit hard to figure out where to go as a result.

New Zealand Story was the first arcade game I played as a kid. I remember getting to the first boss (the whale) after many tries, and being so freaked out that I immediately screwed up and got killed.
Brings back many fond memories.

He's not.

Tiki is the one talking to the female kiwi (with the pink bow).

The shoes are also identical on the one with the skipping rope, but since the game ending has Tiki and the lady together, it's safe to say which one he is

Just checked out the game in MAME. Great visuals, but the music starts to get annoying after a while. It is indeed extremely hard, but I can see how it would be fun to get good at, though I don't think I'll ever try to. My favorite thing was the laser-shooting spaceship that you can hop into.

I don't like the green ones - a bit too sour for my taste... But the "golden" kiwi! WOW sweet & tasty, I love 'em! The only downside is that you can't shave them.

The game kiwi looks more like the fruit kiwi than the bird kiwi though.

I love the way enemy projectiles stick into his soft yellow flesh when he dies.
