Raiden hardware PCB question

Post by parism »

Hi there, I seem to recall back in the 90's when Raiden was out, that the game had substantial slow down in areas where multiple enemy bullets where flying. I know that later versions had different hardware but I have been trying to hunt the original, slow version. Does anyone have a picture of the slow board for reference?

Thanks!

So there are different scrolling speed versions of Seibu Kaihatsu's famed Raiden PCB? That does pique my interest in it. For comparision, one fellow shmupper said he owned two different Cave DDP PCBs with one running a slight tad faster than the other one (due to minute overall CPU clock settings).

Fascinating subject matter when it comes to the world of arcade PCBs indeed, even if they're both the same PCB but built slightly different at the manufacturing PCB level standpoint with remaining parts at hand.

Seibu Kaihatsu did re-release it's Raiden II & Raiden DX PCBs as official "New Version" PCB variants to arcade operators worldwide back in 1996. I generally prefer the unadulterated original Raiden II PCB myself for best gameplaying results..the one that was released back in 1993. It wasn't until February of 1994, that Fabtek officially brought out Raiden II PCB Stateside. The New Version PCBs are subpar in the audio department...tis is best to stick with the original Raiden II/Raiden DX PCB hardware specs for the time being.

It seems there were two different PCB types for Raiden. That doesn't guarantee one is slower than the other though.

May want to take a look here

Thanks guys, it's too bad that there is not enough info on this. Not that it matters really, generally people will want the version without the slow down but I remember playing the one WITH it and would like to get hold of one at some point. I'll keep you guys updated if I find more info on this.

Both MAME machine driver bits say that the main CPU is clocked at 20MHz, "verified on PCB" (though for a driver of this vintage I wouldn't rule out the possibility that only one is actually verified and its "verified" comments just got caught in a copy/paste when the alt set was added). Interestingly, the comments about the alt set say that it appears to be older, and code-wise "looks like Dynamite Duke". Dynamite Duke has a fairly similar configuration but with 16MHz CPU clock, which gives rise to a couple of obvious possibilities:

1) The alt board actually is clocked slower (like Dynamite Duke), and MAME is wrong
2) You were playing a bootleg/hack on a slower board (such as a converted Dynamite Duke)
