Why do indie flicks have the gayest names imaginable?
It feels like a conspiracy. They're usually something like, "Margot's Tangerine Boxcar" or "My Belly-Button is Raw" and they do surprisingly decent in the box office, regardless. I mean what the fuck. I stopped caring after The Royal Tennenbaums. (You see?)
It is my hope that one day, untalented directors like Wes Anderson are put in their proper place by the very audience that once loved them. The thought alone brings a smile to my face.
WITH THAT SAID... The Life Aquatic was not terrible, and it kept me entertained from start to finish. Probably because of Bill Murray. He just has this irresistible, melancholic stage presence in all of his serious roles. It could be simply because those characters are not so far from who he is.

Your post is gay.
Re: Why do indie flicks have the gayest names imaginable?
Bill Murray is gay.
Well, maybe not, but I hate him as an actor. The smugness is overwhelming.

Perhaps more examples of non-gay movie names would help us out here.

Wes Anderson is about as "indie" as M. Night Shyamalan. Are you 12?
That is Galactic Dancing
Re: Why do indie flicks have the gayest names imaginable?
The Life Aquatic is one of my favorite movies. Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors. That said, Wes Anderson isn't really indie. Just niche.

Bee Movie Game
Sakura Wars: Is paris burning?
Heart-Pounding Magical Investigation
Ms. Pac Man
Really who cares. It's like this with everything, even brand names. I want a SCPH-945032 PS2 instead of a SCPH-90000.

Re: Why do indie flicks have the gayest names imaginable?
In what way is Life Aquatic and The Royal Tennenbaums indie? And what exactly is a indie movie?
And who cares what movies are named? I wouldn't go to the movie theatre just because some dude named the movie "Destruction, termination, awesome explosions and giant boobs"

I don't see how a movie title can be sexually attracted to members of the same sex.

I also really enjoyed the Fantastic Mr. Fox, but looking at box office numbers, everyone was too gay to go see it.greg wrote:The Life Aquatic is one of my favorite movies. Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors. That said, Wes Anderson isn't really indie. Just niche.

Re: Why do indie flicks have the gayest names imaginable?
When I say indie, I mean intentionally quirky films typically devoid of charm.
Where did I say that this was something indie films share exclusively? I chose to pick on them because out of every genre, they are the masters not only of stupid, annoying names, but of boring the fucking daylights out of their audience. (Well, they're boring me anyway.) I don't even hate indie films! Once every other blue moon a good one will turn up, and I will commit to watching the whole thing without regret. (See: Broken Flowers.) I like the movie, but it still has a retarded name.
In short, I saw no correlation between silly titles and bad films until I saw a Wes Anderson film. I don't know why people enjoy these movies, but it takes a lot of dedication to waste on something like watching a lot of them. For that, I am impressed.
You need to be more specific, otherwise you sound like you are pulling "facts" out of your ass.linko9 wrote:Bill Murray is gay. Well, maybe not, but I hate him as an actor. The smugness is overwhelming.

You just compared him to a director who is almost as bad, therefore supporting my point. Try putting him in the same leagues as Christopher Nolan, Hitchcock, and Clint Eastwood. It doesn't work out. Those three have a great idea in mind almost every time they approach the drawing board; they want every surprise, let down, betrayal, and resolution surrounding the theme to count. Wes' movies have a premise, but he makes a story out of it in the blandest, most uninteresting ways.szycag wrote:Wes Anderson is about as "indie" as M. Night Shyamalan. Are you 12?

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, really; so long as the movie is decent. Indie films are lacking in that department, but so are action films. (Indie only lacks more.) Into the Wild was the most pretentious, exhausting film in recent memory. Nonsensical dialogue, poor performance by the lead, and the story begged you to care about it through sentimental fagotry. As for what "indie" really is, please see the first sentence in this thread. I would like to know which movies had names like those. I'll be waiting for an answer.Dragoforce wrote:In what way is Life Aquatic and The Royal Tennenbaums indie? And what exactly is a indie movie?

I've got you covered.CMoon wrote:Perhaps more examples of non-gay movie names would help us out here.
Vertigo.
Silence of the Lambs.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
The Pianist. (Hey, it IS about a pianist. Short and to the point is all that was necessary.)
The Shining.
These names draw people in to see them because they are interesting, not stupid.

Skip to about 7:30 for the Gigantic review, it sums it up pretty well.
The idiot indie kids love things that are either ironic, or quirky. There's really no reason for it besides that so many indie/emo/scene kids are tasteless idiots.
Now why Bill Murray is suddenly so popular with people that weren't even alive for over half his career, or seem to care about all those movies I have no idea. The guy was on Saturday Night Live back in the late 70s when it was actually good and all people care about is The Life Aquatic and a stupid cameo in Zombieland.

How does SNL have anything to do with his performances in the movies I've mentioned? Is that how you judge movies? The viewers must be around for the peak of his career for their opinion to count?t0yrobo wrote:Now why Bill Murray is suddenly so popular with people that weren't even alive for over half his career, or seem to care about all those movies I have no idea. Really not sure what to say here. I generally love Anderson's work and Bill Murray has been the man since I first saw Ghostbusters as a wee lad. So yeah, crap topic.

I actually agree in part with the OP - or at least I see some sense in it. But the 'hollywood indie' movie has started to fade out now, it's not as prominent as it was when Wes Anderson was doing his boring faux-intellectual guff, or when they were releasing things like Sideways (which gave me a chuckle) and Lost in Translation (which was amazing, and not cos it's got Japaneze shit in it.)
In it's defense though, Hollywood stuff is so trite I at least respected the fact that such movies were an attempt at something different for a change.

Spec and I were hoping to go see it. The number of theaters it's playing at has dwindled. I'm glad it's stop motion instead of stupid CG. Plus you can't have a Wes Anderson movie without Bill Murray and Owen Wilson, it seems.CMoon wrote:I also really enjoyed the Fantastic Mr. Fox, but looking at box office numbers, everyone was too gay to go see it.

He is a great actor. He may have been underexploited by bad directors, but saying that Bill Murray is a bad actor is just meh.
On topic, I think the most ridiculous indie flick name was "Brick".
