Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
What games gave you the greatest feeling of power? More specifically, what moments outshined everything else in the game? (Or what you've played so far, if you haven't finished the game yet!) It will be interesting to see how people differ on this.
Here are mine. (SPOILERS AHEAD!)
It's a toss up between the first encounter with Doku, and the garden maze full of transparent killer piranha. -Ninja Gaiden on XBOX
Second encounter with Solus. -Breakdown for XBOX
The last thing you do before credit roll. It looks and feels fantastic. -Mirror's Edge for XBOX 360.
Everything after the trains in stage 1-3 -Espgaluda on PS2. (Have not finished.)
Stage 1-3 -Dodonpachi Daioujou on PS2. (Have not finished.)
The endboss. (I forgot it's name.) -P.N.03 for Gamecube.
Fire Fucking Leo. -Viewtiful Joe for Gamecube.
Last boss chick. -Arcana Heart for PS2.
The first encounter with Nightmare. (Using Alastor paired with Ebony and Ivory.)
The cyclops/bat thing that shoots a laser at you at the end of a cutscene, which immediately cuts seamlessly into battle. -Both from Devil May Cry for PS2.
That's all I have, off the top of my head. I'm sure that I'm leaving some out...

Re: Best gaming moments.
I just had one in Assassin's Creed II!
I'm chasing down these two guys at once as they run toward their ship. They run past a group of guards, who proceed to line up and form a barrier with their swords across the street. This means you can't run through the guards because you'll take a sword to the face. The game does this from time to time to encourage the player to free-run or climb to another route past the guards in order to continue chasing the target(s). Instead, here's what I do: I do a diving roll through the line of guards, narrowly avoiding two swords. As I come up, my two targets are standing next to each other right in the street. I use the double hidden blade to stab them each in the face simultaneously as soon as I come out of my roll. Probably the coolest thing I've ever witnessed in a game and I was smiling for five minutes after I did that. I wish I had been recording that somehow.

Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers?)
Damn. I really need to play that one. Out of curiosity, how much of it was you, and how much was the game? I bring this up because sometimes this "feeling" is forced on you through great animation. For example: the segment in Mirror's Edge as mentioned above. It felt awesome, sure, but I felt like most of that was due to the spectacular effects once you land on the helicopter. (When in actuality, you are only running and jumping like you did many times earlier in the game.) It can be a little confusing separating accomplishment from "great presentation".
Sorry if this is too vague. I don't want to ruin that part for anyone.

Would be wise to put a huge spoilers marker before spoiling anything. Otherwise, people not many people will be willing to check the thread.

two crude dudes for the megadrive when you get to the last boss he is a little stubby midget and me and my friend proceded to throw him about (as is the style of the game) I droped him and he morphed in to a bad ass monster. I think that was a kinda bad ass moment in gaming for me and stuck in my memory all these years later.
also when the dogs jumped out of the window in RE1. Thats the first time a games ever made me jump. I knew it was coming but they had that survivial horror things down quite well on the saturn and PS1

Which Saturn games would those be? I don't play many survival horror games, but I believe Siren was the greatest thing to happen to that genre. I have my fair share of memories from it, but none of which made me feel "powerful"....Lordstar wrote: also when the dogs jumped out of the window in RE1. Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
Thread reminds me I need to beat Ninja Gaiden (just the final boss) and Breakdown (I met Solus at least once but don't remember anything too special about it.)
Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
I dont know about other saturn games but I first played Resident evil on the saturn and it made me jump. resident evil was multiplatform game coming out on both the saturn and the PSX.drunken starsailor wrote: Which Saturn games would those be? As for two dudes on the MD it was more a persoanl thing for me and my best friend. We used to rent console games and that one just strikes me as a great gaming moment on a personal level. Also playing Street fighter 2.

Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
My most memorable gaming moment was when I finally realized how much fun and effective warriors are in RPGs compared to wizards. Ever since I started playing them I always chose the wizard class, thinking about how powerful they become in the end. But the whole career of a wizard consists of casting a spell, running for your life so you don't get killed and then repeat forever. It gets boring really fast.
I wanted to try something different so, when I played Trickster Online, I chose the Bunny class (which is the equivalent of fighter). At one point I did a mission where I had to kill 15 monsters in 10 minutes. You had the option to kill as many as you could during that time, and if you killed enough of them, your name was registered in a high score list kept in the server. You could repeat this mission up to 5 times.
I didn't care about the hiscore list, so I was just killing the minimum required and going back to the NPC. During my 4th time doing the mission, however, I saw another fighter attempting to get a hiscore. He never stopped for a moment, as soon as he killed one enemy he went straight to the next, and using potions all the time to stay alive. It was really cool to watch.
So I thought "you know what, I'm gonna try that". So I picked all my HP and MP potions I had stored and did the mission again for the last time. During those 10 minutes I never had less than 3 enemies attacking me at a time, I was using my special attacks all the time and using my potions like mad. Two guys who were passing by started cheering for me. I ended up killing 97 of them and getting 3rd place in the hiscore list. I could've done better if I didn't run out of MP potions at some point.
In the end, those 10 minutes as a fighter were much more fun than my whole career as a wizard, who I wouldn't even come close to that kill count. I always choose the fighter class in RPGs now, and they're indeed much more fun to play.

Another memorable moment was chasing a guy for 10 minutes straight in Battlefield 2142 for a knife kill. He was a newbie and got lost in a region filled with mountains. He was always running and I was desperately trying to catch up but also trying to stay out of his sight. It was really satisfying when I finally got him.
Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers?)
What I did wasn't scripted, in fact I think I circumvented what the designers intended me to do at that part of the mission, which is exactly why it was so amazing. I pressed the "tackle" button (Circle while sprinting) and instead of tackling somebody Ezio did a diving roll (I wasn't even sure that would work). This let me dive through a usually impassible barrier. Then as I came up I hit the attack button and I happened to have my hidden blades equipped. Based on Ezio's position relative to the two targets, he just stuck both arms up and stabbed them both in the face. It was spectacular!drunken starsailor wrote:Damn. I really need to play that one. Any time you use the tornado spell in Bullet Witch is epic. It's not a scripted animation, which makes it all the more impressive and unpredictable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IhZYc004VE
As a great man once said, "I love it when a plan comes together." That's what it feels like when executing a well implemented strategy on some of the more complex maps in Valkyria Chronicles. My units had overwhelming stats by the endgame that made it all too tempting to use cheap bullrush tactics, but there were a few mid-game missions that really required some thought.
The trench run during the climax of Mass Effect. With an extensive rack of techs and biotics to play with by the endgame, this intense, pacy fight gives a great opportunity to tear through the enemy ranks.

Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
Aside from MGS (the whole series is one big 9000-games long best gaming moment ever) there are three games that have megatons of those moments, and they are the fucking Marathon trilogy:
- Actually, the beginning of the Aleph One version of Marathon
- I'm not a really crying type of person, but there was one moment that made me shed a tear. In Marathon 2, when you should destroy Durandal's core right after he finally admits the player character his friend...
- Same game, after several Durandal-less missions he gloriously returns with the ship jam-packed with weapons and ammunition and ready to KICK ASS!
- In Marathon Infinity, when the player character, Durandal and Tycho happen to be on one ship, and when Tycho sends you to vacuum, Durandal quickly teleports you to safety. It's a cheap effect, but hell does it work
- The last mission in Infinity. Don't play it at night!
- The three words that conclude the whole story. 'You Are Destiny'. Hell, I cried out loud when I saw them, because I knew - Marathon 4 does not exist
Oh yeah, and one of the most memorable moments in FPS history:
- In Aliens vs Perdator 2, level 2 (3?) of the Alien's campaign. To this day the whole world remembers how it begins. Too bad that it was spoiled for me *sigh*

For those whose vision is worse than mine (and FYI, mine is ass): I said 'destroy Durandal's core right after he finally admits', not 'right after the player admits... whatever the hell he admits'drunken starsailor wrote:1.This should not be something you would want to admit to.
Again, my vision is ass, but didn't you say 'what moments outshined everything else in the game'? Well, the moments I've described DO outshine everything in the game, even each other. Does compute. Best regardsdrunken starsailor wrote:2. Please read the title post again.

Re: Best gaming moments. (Spoilers)
This only half counts because the game takes control from you at the last second, but in Ikaruga as you're facing off with the final boss, you take in every single shot it can fire at you... then blast every last one of them back at it with such force that it destroys your ship, as well.
It's like Rob famously said, "a few seconds later, (t)he(y) will wish (t)he(y) had not done that."

And thank you for doing so, because I might have been tempted to hunt it down and the only thing that would've interested me would be to see what kind of final boss monster they'd put in there. I liked the fact that Opposing Force designed an entirely new giant monster to throw in at the end. That's not too bad for an expansion.EinhanderZwei wrote:OK, about the gameplay, not story moments, here we go:

Nah, Blue Shi(f)t is not worth hunting for. Grab a bootleg disc or download ISO. In fact, they've managed to fill its CD with Opposing Force and High Definition Pack - clear indication of the game's size compared to predecessors

*cleaning throat* Alright, back to topic
When I've spent a megaton of time, sweat and nerves to beat Maken Shao, I saw two shittiest endings I've ever seen. In fact, they were so shitty that the whole game before achieved some reason. I said: 'Bah, I have just beaten a pretty neat and stylish slasher to see the unhappiest outros in the Universe. Fuck you, Maken Shao' and smiled

Shooting all of the containers in that TIE Defender practice mission to bring out 25 enemy fighters at a time. Takes a LONG time to clear them all out, but it's hilariously fun and the closest thing to a genuine challenge the game ever gives you.

I love the moment when you finally take down a bad ass RPG hidden boss, particularly my encounters with Gabriel Celeste and Ethereal Queen. Unlike most plot bosses that can be taken down by a spot of power leveling and little else, good post game bosses expect you to be at max level (or close to) and can quite easily tear you a new one even then. I suppose I have an obsession with building up ultimate gear and messing around with stat maxing, as well as setting up workable stratagies, and I am often releaved when the story section of a game finishes so I can work on the real meat.

THe best gaming moment I've seen in recent years is when I was doing a run through W-Ring the double rings and I got so pissed at Stage X that my friend(who plays a few shmups, but has never really played W-Ring)took over, made it to the final boss with the pea-shooter weapon and totally WASTED him with zero lives and no ring to back him up.

I think my best gaming moment was in a Counter-Strike clan match. I was playing as a CT on de_dust and I was the last of my team left. The bomb got planted and I proceeded to kill 3 terrorists and defuse the bomb with one second left on the bomb timer. It was pretty epic.
Feedback will set you free.
