Green Lantern Rebirth

Post by JBC »

I don't know how many of you shmup-puppies are also comic readers but right now would be a good time to start with Geoff Jones and Ethan Van Sciver's Green Lantern: Rebirth series.

This story is awesome. It wraps all the questions right together and answers them all - at the same time returning Hal Jordan to his former greatness and restoring the Green Lantern Corps.

Never in my history of reading comics have i been so impressed by a creative team than i am right now. I never thought that they could bring Hal Jordan back and actually make me LIKE him again.

This guy single handedly killed like 3,200 Corps members and did all kinds of crazy psycho stuff. But this series fixes it all!

Ethan Van Sciver is one of the best "New" guys.
Currently reading the whole prelude to Infinite Crisis thing. Looks kinda promising.
Green Lantern: Rebirth is really good, and the fact that Hal Jordan no longer is connected to The Spectre has serious repercussions in Infinite Crisis also.

I used to read a lot of comics back in my day, and when I got the Zero Hour comics, I was too young to understand why GL went all crazy and stuff. Why did he go crazy? I never found out.

It's been years since I've even bought a comic book, but I have been reading some graphic novels now, like Red Son and stuff. Is Rebirth a graphic novel or just a comic?

IIRC, Superman's death had something to do with the fact that Hal went all bananas. I think the Eradicator or The Cyborg Superman dropped a bomb in Coast City, and the Lantern Masters forbade him from using the ring to restore it, or something like that.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Glad to see Hal Jordan back. He's my favorite JLA member right behind Bats and Supes. What's going to happen to Kyle? And where does this leave the african-american Lantern from the animated series, Jon/John Stewart? (And why make an afroamerican Lantern anyway? Weren't Cyborg and Black Volcano/Vulcan supposed to fill the "let's have some diversity in our superheroes" requirement? Along with Samurai and El Dorado. :P )
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Not to derail the thread, but I had to mention that my favorite creative team have to be John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake. They did the Spectre series (which ties into GL a little), and also Grimjack, Suicide Squad, and some other projects. The 90's Spectre run, which went from about 1-60ish if I can remember, has to be my favorite comics (next to Watchmen).
Don't just dodge bullets, dance around them.

SPOILERS!

Kyle Rayner is still a Green Lantern - now he is a member of the newly restored Green Lantern Corps - along with John Stewart (the black guy asked about earlier), Guy Gardner, Kilowog, and about 7000 others.

Hal Jordan went crazy because Mongul destroyed coast city during the Death or Rebirth of Superman thing. We find out in Green Lantern Rebirth that Hal was subconsiously possessed by an evil entity named Parallax that was made up of living fear.

Parallax has been alive since before the beginning of this universe. Green is the color of willpower on the emotional/psychic spectrum - Yellow (the color of Parrallax) is the color of fear. The Gaurdians defeated Parrallax eons ago and locked him up in the central power battery - this is why Green Lanterns have always had a weakness to yellow.

When Hal went crazy the Gaurdians unleased Sinestro from the battery. Sinestro was another Green Lantern who went crazy along time ago. Sinestro uses a yellow ring. The yellow ring is powered by fear. Hal defeats Sinesto by snapping his neck, killing him. This allows Parralax to fully possess Hal through the ring because Hal only knows fear in his subconsious mind. Or something.

When Parrallax Hal stopped the sun from exploding to save Earth and died in the process this allowed the Spectre to latch onto him. The Spectre hoped to burn Parrallax off of Hal's soul but couldn't quite do it.

It really actually makes alot of since if you read the story - unfortunatly i'm not very good at making sense -lol.
