Refenrences to classical music in shmups soundtracks

Post by ave »

These days I'm listening to a lot of Beethoven again and it came to my mind that his works are quite often featured in shmups soundtracks.
If you know more references to classic music please post them =) These chip conversions are beautiful to hear.

I know:

Thexder ("Moonlight sonata", right before a boss fight I think)
Yalkina STG ("Moonlight sonata", during 1-9 boss fight)
Most of the Parodius games, esp. Sexy Parodius (many parts of Beethoven's 9th)

The only thing that's better than the moonlight sonata converted to Famicom chipsound (Thexder) is the moonlight sonata converted to PC8801-chipsound (Thexder as well). AMAZING!! 8)

If you want classical music in shmups, look no further than the Parodius series - there's a truckload of it in there, though it's obviously been "cute-i-fied" somewhat. One of the big Gradius sites has a list of all the outside music featured in the Parodius games, though I forget exactly where it is.

Relevant question that has been bothering me because I know the answer but can't think of it:
What piece is the beginning of the Deathsmiles stage 1-A track based on?

Upon review of Boogie Wings, I have come to the conclusion Cave really likes Boogie Wings. The end.

Also, Gyruss has excellent music, best of the bunch by far. Otherwise, Konami misses Okamoto.

Gyruss is jam-packed with classical music. Check out the NES version - it's fun to listen to it in chiptune format :D
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

Megablast busts out "Ode to Joy" for its end sequence.

I wish we knew who composed its OST (game doesn't show credits), some great songs on there. Stage 2's music is a dead ringer for YACK / Yasuhisa Watanabe's Gun Frontier OST, but I've never seen confirmation either way.

The start of the second loop of Centuri/Taito Phoenix sounds like it uses a re-keyed intro of Fur Elise.
