your favorite cute 'em ups

Post by professor ganson »

Hmmm... I'll have to think about this myself before posting a response. But I'm more interested in what your favorties are.

Probably Sexy Parodius. The whole series is awesome, IMO. I've not played them super extensively though.

Also nod to Twinbee series (especially the SFC game, Pop n' Twin Bee) but the bell power up system gets on my nerves.

Always wanted to try Star Parodier.

Magical Chase and Star Parodier are two quite good ones, and then there's the Parodius series.

Any of the Twinbee games. Gotta love the feeling of playful adventure the anime / miyazaki-esque motif helps these games incite. Twinbee Portables on the PSP for the win.

But I really like Plus Alpha too, so cheery and epic, especially the Eden stage's music.

Bokan to Ippatsu is quite fun. I have no idea why it gets bashed in every review I've read, I kinda like it for what it is.

Harmful Park, Cotton 2/Boomerang, and Twinkle Star Sprites are probably my favorites overall. Nobody's mentioned Game Tengoku yet, so I'll just throw it out there for the heck of it though, heh.

Funnily enough, I haven't found the original Cotton "cute". The somber colour palette, the bosses of fairly disturbing appearance...
My favourites are:
Gun Hohki (Mystic Riders)
Magical Chase (preferably the US version)
Twinkle Star Sprites (although the framerate drops make playing vs CPU pretty pointless).
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

That's right. Cotton can be classified as 'dark cute'em up'

Da! and Jikkyou Oshaberi are my favorite Parodii (Parodiuses?). I remember what I jokingly said after Da!: 'I won't play shmups anymore, because now I know HOW fun can be made of them'

The Parodius series. I think Da! is my favorite, followed by Gokujou.

Harmful Park & Sexy Parodius are the milestones of cute.
The whole Parodius series is brilliant, but this one's the best IMO. Never could stand Twinbee games, the design is nice but the bells are so fucking annoying... >_>

Good question, ave. I think of Death Smiles as pretty much in line with the Cotton series. I'll admit, I may be off here. But it seems to me that they were going for the cute halloween look. Not as cute as Harmful Park, stage 2, but cute nonetheless. Cuter, anyway, than Gunbird. I'm not really sure what Psikyo was aiming for there, to be honest.
