Ok. I've been listening to Children of Bodom for over a year now...
Does anyone know anything like that that might interest me?

Not that they're comparable, Teen Cthulhu is an interesting band that uses the whole symphonic keyboard bit. http://www.lifeisabuse.com/mp3.html

Not sure if they are a rip-off, they only have 3 albums but they are all great stuff. Listen to HADES!
Children of Bodom is my favorite band too, other than Kalmah and them I have The Gallery by Dark Tranquillity. At least listen to the song "Punish My Heaven" !
A bit different but check out Slaughter of the Soul (album) by At The Gates. I also have Jester Race (album) from In Flames. Don't listen to the newer In Flames. Stick to Jester Race or Whoracle. You may not like it though.

Amen to this. I feel the same way that you do - their two newer albums have sort of lost it, so stick to the old stuff. I pretty much like everything they've got up to Clayman. Good stuff.Valgar wrote:I also have Jester Race (album) from In Flames. Don't listen to the newer In Flames. Stick to Jester Race or Whoracle. You may not like it though.
As for other stuff, circuitface, I highly recommend checking out Nightrage, Imperanon, Warmen, and like mentioned before, In Flames. Warmen has a bit more classic, instrumental feel to it, so I'm not sure if you'd like it alongside Children of Bodom. Regardless, all the stuff just listed is among my favorites.

Post Barners Cannibal Corpse sucks ass. Everything pre-Bleeding is ace though. Personally, I prefer the old New York school of death metal i.e. Voracious Contempt and Extinction of Benevolence era Internal Bleeding, Pyrexia and Deaden.pablo wrote:Cannibal Corpse. Totally. The best Death Metal ever. Give "Eaten back to life" a go.

Holy hell, you were right. I had "A Predator's Portrait" and thought there were a couple of good songs while the rest were merely decent. I'd heard good things about this album before, but since I've agreed with you on a lot of music in the past (Dark Tranquillity: DD and Anathema, for example), you put the last nail in the coffin. Bought it on the way to work today, and it is excellent from start to finish.Herr Schatten wrote:Here's another one: "Natural Born Chaos" by Soilwork. I don't care at all about the rest of their albums, but on that particular one they pretty much got everything right.

ever checked out any entombed? i don't think they've thrown anything out that's too great recently but their album 'to ride, shoot straight and speak the truth' is great. some of the lyrical content is a bit shite but they are swedish
the guitar sound blows me away and they were one of the loudest and evil bands i've ever seen live (supporting a great pre hip hop influence shit machine head, what a gig)

I saw Entombed a couple of years ago in Manchester and they were awesome. And Machine Head have pretty much gone back to awesomeness, their last album is one of their best and they're certainly one of the best metal bands I've seen live.sjewkestheloon wrote:ever checked out any entombed? i don't think they've thrown anything out that's too great recently but their album 'to ride, shoot straight and speak the truth' is great. some of the lyrical content is a bit shite but they are swedishthe guitar sound blows me away and they were one of the loudest and evil bands i've ever seen live (supporting a great pre hip hop influence shit machine head, what a gig)
I got the three Kalmah albums... well worth it. These guys are really great. After a couple of listens through each album i realized that these guys have a similar process as CoB but are so different it's unbelievable. Honestly, since my first few listens not much has reminded me of CoB except for the few synth parts on each album. I really dig 'They Will Return' and 'Burbot's Revenge'. Awesome songs.
I will check out the other stuff mentioned as soon as i can - it's hard to do over a public pc though! Still - any suggestions you can make for me will be greatly appreciated. I can't believe i liked the first band someone responded with! Thanks, Valgar!

Entombed aren't that great.
Burzum and Darkthrone, pure Norwegian black. Also look into some Regurgitate, swedish grind.
Btw, Dark Tranquility and Children of Bodom are quite honestly some of the worst bands that ever sold more than thousand copies of the a album of the last ten years.

Old Man Gloom is made up of members of Isis, Cave In, and Converge, three bands I would highly recommend.
Entombed does have some great stuff, by the way; a good chunk of "Wolverine Blues" is pretty awesome and "Clandestine" is regarded a masterpiece on the same level of "Slaughter of the Soul" by At the Gates by some.
Also, I can understand if you don't like certain bands, pablo... but you don't have to outright flame them; I'm sure there's people out there who would say negative things about the bands you listed.

Don't forget the Haunted. (also Swedish) Great liveband and all their records are worthwhile.

I too saw Entombed play live a few years ago(think it was '93, touring wolverine blues) and they rocked. They supported Napalm Death and they blew. them. away. Napalm are a good band but those first three LP's by Entombed are something else. 'Wolverine Blues' is probably the heaviest LP ive ever heard. If i remember rightly, they encored with 'Left Hand path' and it nearly took the roof off. Ferocious stuff.theevilfunkster wrote:I saw Entombed a couple of years ago in Manchester and they were awesome. Alot of the early Earache(entombed's record label) stuff is of a pretty high quality-Brutal Truth, Cathedral, Terrorizer, Morbid Angel, Carcass and Sleep are some other bands i spent my (arguably mis-spent)youth listening to!

yeah wolverine blues rocks but i'm mostly partial to 'ride...' as it actually has more tunes with the brutality. not too keen on their most recent record though. seemed more steel slide than metal....
as for machine head they'll never beat songs like blood for blood and violate now. when you say their newest album is that supercharger? if so i listened to it and really didn't like it at all. it just seemed overproduced and crap. that's just me though, each to their own and that.
anyone here into british punk, abnd that sort of raw sound? i love my buzzcocks and pistols etc. also i'm well into a lot of the earlyish new york side of it including patti smith and television etc. those bands have done some brilliant raw albums that don't suffer from the over produced sound that many metal bands seem to sucumb to in their quest to appeal to tiny hoody wearing kids.

Oh god no, Supercharger was shite. Their last album was Through The Ashes Of Empires and is almost on par with Burn My Eyes.sjewkestheloon wrote: as for machine head they'll never beat songs like blood for blood and violate now. when you say their newest album is that supercharger? if so i listened to it and really didn't like it at all. it just seemed overproduced and crap. that's just me though, each to their own and that.
It doesn't get any rawer, or louder, than Guitar Wolf. The japanese punkrock-noisers with more heart than mind, more balls than fingers, and less music than distortion. C: I recommend 'Jet Generation' as a good introduction.
