No worries. I met a guy a while back from your area who's a big shmup fan. Sold him a candy cab too, which he's in the process of MAMEing. I should contact him and see how he's going, now that I think about it.
Generiname wrote:I have Ikaruga though and can't see how it's the best shooter ever like I've seen a lot of people and magazines say. It's good for sure but I can think of a bunch of other shooters I enjoy more. Ones without environmental hazards.
Same. I like Ikaruga - it's a nice game. But definitely not the best ever. Insert my usual "I'm a raving Cave fanboi" disclaimer, but DDP beats it hands down.

Good to know there's another maniac close by and yeah, once you've had Cave there's no going back.

I forgot to mention on the collections thing I have a DS as well. I was reminded of that because there's a massive sale at EB & I picked up a new copy of Nanostray for $35 at the one in Mitchelton today. I know it's not the best game but it'll kick arse to have a vert to play when I need to catch the train, even with all the flaws I've noted thus far it looks like it's going to be fun and something nice to go alongside the GBA Gradius.

If that 'Welcome to Brisbane' sign is the one near the Arana Leagues Club, then I live very close to that area too. Maybe it is really the Pine Rivers Shire which is Australia's shmup hot spot...

Yeah man that's the one I'm talking about, the one on Dawson Parade. I drive down that road just about every night to go see my woman :)

wow - I didn't know there were so many people from aus here!

I'm in sydney and there are NO shooters I can find in any arcades here. The arcade scene here is all fighters (T6 and SF4) and racing games (Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3DX, Initial D 3 and 5).

Does anyone else know if there are any shmups around nowadays in arcades around Oz?

I've just started getting into the genre by playing Cave games on MAME and PS2.

I heard from a mate that apparently one of the arcades up in Sydney has Deathsmiles, I believe at the time he was heading up there to compete in that ozhadou tournament or whatever, almost 2 years ago though so perhaps it's no longer there, but if you stumble across an arcade with like 4 machines running 3rd strike hey maybe it's there.

Someone was nice enough to buy the 10 Egret 2s we had at the Timeout here, now everything is running in LCD cabinets, half the game are running through a vga ...converter thing and aside from looking shit they also have a nice amount of input delay |: Somewhat happy that I decided not to talk the guy into buying Ibara (hey it worked for fixing up/upgrading the IIDX machine here).

Do you think you could ask your mate for me and everyone else in Sydney please?

I've been going to arcades regularly in Sydney for the last 6 years and I've never seen Deathsmiles here. If there is some hidden arcade please let me know. :)

I'm honestly not so sure myself and I haven't spoken to the guy in a while now. I had a look at the Ozhadou forums to see if he was full of it or not, someone mentioned deathsmiles at "ggs" in a thread from a couple of years ago, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that during one particular event someone brought a deathsmiels pcb over.

So it seems I completely misunderstood!

Sorry to get your hopes up >:

its NOT the new shooter that they got at ggs, thats game is Deathsmiles.
I was under the impression that good games was some kind of arcade :S

GG's is like a hobby/card type shop full of people playing Magic the Gathering and other such games. They have about 4 cabs in there but most of them are switched off and they only normally have Tekken 6 up and running. :( I might ask the guys one day if I go past if they actually have any other PCBs they can put in for play.

It was. The guy who ran it was a regular on the AussieArcade forums for a while too (sneek).

It appears the arcade part of GoodGames has shut down now. Sneek was on my MSN list for a while. I might message him and see if he's around still.

Definitely NOT shut down... :D

We have SF4, T6, and some randoms... we have more cabs coming in soon.

As for the cabs off... get the staff to turn them on or you can do it yourself.

Melbourne here, first time seeing this old thread, so i might as well say that I'm currently playing random shmups....on random xD

From Viewpoint to Parodious, to old school Galaga etc.
Not really playing anything full on at the moment, kind of just going back to certain games for that nostalgic value. :D

Reminds me of what i love about these games, i can play them in short sessions to long sessions, and i can always go back to them, no matter how much i may of played a particular title.
My newest purchase however was the Gundemonium Collection on PSN (gotta support 'em!). Brilliant three games of which I'm happy to now have on PS3, with Hitogata Happa being my favorite.

Intensity at Marion (Adelaide) had Raiden DX, last time I checked.

In Victoria there's a rural time called Wangaratta which has a couple cabs in the cinema. Raiden and another vert that I can't recall the name of.

Tasmania here.

god we have hardly any arcade cabinets left in the state, let alone shmups.
Thank Christ for home consoles or I’d never be able to get my shooting fix down here.

Plus I’m rather cold at the moment.

Just giving the heads up that Bluehouse on Russel St in Melbourne has some vert just called "DX" set up on a Blast City cab. Timeout at Box Hill has a really sweet Raiden IV set up - unfortunately I didn't have time to give it a spin. They're the only STGs at these arcades I'm afraid, although Bluehouse has Metal Slug 6 and some kind of Neo-Geo compilation with MS3 on it. At least they're both great arcades to go to for fighters.

"DX" is probably Raiden DX no?

Thanks for the heads up on the other games. Please post up if you spot any other STGs in arcades there in Melbourne. :)

Last time I went there I only had a chance to visit Galactic Circus and there were none there. :(
