Anime Detour - Minnesota, April 23-25 2010

April 23-25, 2010

I'm bringing a lot of shmup stuff to the gameroom at Anime Detour this year. 360, PS2, Saturn stuff mostly, although I have stuff all the way back to Atari if requested. I'll have at least one TV permanently rotated for the weekend. I also just got the parts for my next joystick project, so I should have a new custom stick ready for use by then. Also lots of import rhythm gaming stuff for those who enjoy them (Beatmania, Pop'n, Pump It Up, etc).

Wonder if we can get enough interest for some kind of tournament, maybe Battle Garegga cause I suck at it and want to watch some good players. :D

I'd advise anyone interesed in attending to preregister. Attendees are growing much faster than staff/infrastructure, so there's been a registration cap for the last few years (I don't make those kind of decisions, don't hate me please). The registration cap is around 4500 people this year.

I'm not sure if anyone here attended, but thank you for anyone who did. Shmup-related highlights include:

Raiden arcade machine materialized out of thin air during setup (one of those "where the heck did that come from" moments).

Ketsui arrived in the mail Friday afternoon (day of the convention). Everyone got to play it except me, because I was so busy on Friday.

Dealer's room (Mad-Gear) had Nexzr for sale. MINE!

Freaking people out with PS2 Cho Aniki.

I also had one of the Galaga-conversations on Sunday morning, before I was able to turn on all the game systems again:
"Can you put in that one old game?"
"Which one?"
"Uhh ... the one that plays like Galaga."
"Did you play as a space ship, helicopter, or flying person?"
"It had some bugs in it."
"Ok, I know which 'old game' you are talking about."

Unrelated to shmups, but when I was out for a bit one of my other staff members set up DJ Hero directly next to Beatmania. I really wish I were around to hear the comments coming out of that.
