Odd Japan/movie question

Post by black mariah »

I just got through watching Dark Water. Really bad movie, but whatever. There's this one scene where this woman and her daughter are in what looks like an outdoor marketplace, but it has a roof over it. WTF is up with that? I figured I'd ask here first because I know a lot of people here are from Japan or have spent time there and might know what the hell that is.

I did not like Dark Water either that much... Its eerie enough but the tempo never gets going and the ending is a bit stupid (imo).

I saw a trailer to the US version which looks a bit better, I hope they do not keep strictly to the storyline though.

Either of you know anything about the weird outdoor market with the roof?

Shotengai! Shotengai! That's the word for a shopping arcade street. It is a shopping street closed to traffic with a roof (usually curved or triangular) covering. There's not a whole lot of them in Tokyo, at least not what I've found. I've seen them in plenty of other cities, though. My favorite ones are in Kobe, in Sannomiyia and Motomachi. Gosh, I'm getting all nostalgic now...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but my wife wants to see it. I don't know if I'll watch the Japanese movie or the American movie first.

Awesome! I thought someone here might know. So it is a regular street with a roof, and not a mall designed to look like a street. Thanks for the info!
