Best version of Radirgy and Chaos Field?
I do not own a Wii, and do not want to own one, so I cannot buy the Ultimate Shooting Collection. I do however own a JPN DreamCast and PS2, and was wondering if there's a difference in the versions of the games?

About Radirgy, go with the Dreamcast port all the way.
The PS2 version is plagued with horrible slowdown.
Don't know about Chaos Field, I still have to play them!

Karous is not available on the PS2, so that makes that decision easy.
Chaos Field and Radirgy on PS2 add bonus game modes but there's some awkward slowdown. Go with the DC versions if you want the closest thing to the NAOMI originals.

I notice Radirgy is on the GameCube as well, and I think I read somewhere that the slowdown is not present in that version. Is this true?

So is Chaosfield (even in the U.S).
And yes, both Radirgy and Chaosfield play nicely on the GC. I have not compared them side by side to the DC though.
Oh, and you'll want a controller converter so you can plug PS2 compatible controllers in. The Hori classic controller is pretty nice too though.

Not that it really matters, but Radilgy does have a fair amount of dialogue that the Wii version 'translates'(loosely speaking, it's not exactly Working Designs material).

The best version of Chaos Field is definitely on the Gamecube. It has the best extra mode, and there's zero slowdown.
They've also turned the music up for your benefit.

Yeah, the GC one gets rid of slowdown, but it adds some graphic glitching that wasn't there I think. The GC one's the one i own though.

There's meant to be slowdown, Its there on the arcade version in the later couple of levels as its unplayable otherwise.

The best versions are the Dreamcast versions. I can't comment about the Wii versions since I have never played them, but the removal of slowdown in the GameCube version of Chaos Field is inaccurate. The slowdown of a boss explosion is often used for Dramatic effect. The boss explosions come and go in an instant in the GameCube version, where as on the Dreamcast and NAOMI the bosses die in much more prolonged explosive destruction.
Since these sequences were probobably timed against the clock speed of the Dreamcast/NAOMI, any removal of slowdown during gameplay by running on a more powerful console is going to result in the bosses sequences being affected as well.
Typically, how a game is introduced to us in the arcades is generally what becomes the accepted standard, and any variations beyond that point become oddities.
People are more than welcome to prefer alternatives based on personal preference, but technically the Dreamcast versions of these games all match their arcade counterparts exactly.

Well, I am going to side step tommyb's trolling comments, in an effort to get this thread back on track.

To get the Dreamcast versions you need to bring some serious cash to the cable to get them all. So, its really hard to argue with how cheap the US GameCube release of Chaos Field is, as well as the low price of Ultimate Shooting Collection.

I'm not a big Chaos Field fan, but I can say that the DC version of Radirgy/Rajirugi/Rajisoijdsfhg is quite solid. Not sure how much it costs compared to the others though.

I own Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PS2 versions and am quite happy with each.
At first, the incredible slowdown on PS2 Radirgy was shocking, then curious and interesting, eventually became integral to the enjoyment.
I've never seen a level stutter like that. Some sections of the game are seriously played in slow motion. and I love it!
Radirgy PreciouS is a curiosity piece, so you shouldn't get it as your only version.
Chaos Field New Order doesn't have any severe conversion issues. I don't typically have my display in vertical orientation when my PS2 is hooked-up so I play more Chaos Field on my PS2.
The Dreamcast versions are indispensable. Arcade perfect afaik, and playable with my favorite controller (rumble-enabled ASCii Stick).
The Dreamcast has such a diverse and incredible library of vertical shmups - Radirgy (and Karaus) are unique gems among many others.
Just being able to go from Trigger Heart Exelica, to Ikaruga, to Zero Gunner 2, to Gunbid 2, to Under Defeat and then play some Radirgy is such and incredible and arcade like session of gaming ~ all while sitting on the carpeted floor, joystick on the lap, swapping discs out of the Dreamcast ~ it doesn't get any better than this.
Chaos Field fills an interesting void on Dreamcast. When the TV is in horizontal orientation and I've got a shooter itch, Border Down is the obvious goto game. To mix things up a bit, Chaos Field comes in very handy.
On the Gamecube, Chaos Field was available very cheap in the US, and it is good to have around when I really want to play a shmup and Gamecube is the only system ready to play. The Hori Digital controller is very good, but I just don't care to play post-16bit shmups without a joystick or Saturn-style joypad ~ and I don't have Gamecube stick or converter - so I just don't play shmups on Gamecube. Likewise, when my Gamecube is hooked-up I'm playing horizontal oriented games - so even though Radirgy GeneriC (and Ikaruga) port is great, I don't play it.
Overall, consider what other games you're likely to add to your library, and think about whether you're likely to favor one system over another in regard to controller selection and also how you might have your display oriented when any given system were hooked-up.
