Giga Wing 1 & 2(Dreamcast): worth owning?

Post by cj iwakura »

So I have a friend who owns both these games, and insists they're really rare.

He's willing to give me them if I give him MGS3: Subsistence and a pair of Wii component cables. While I'm reluctant to part with MGS3S, I think I could find another copy easily enough.

So are they worth it? I liked what I played of the first stage in 2. Is one better than the other?

These are the US versions, by the way.

Giga Wing is awesome. Some people find it too easy though, I think it's a good challenge for a 1cc for a mediocre shmup player like myself. Giga Wing2 is a bit harder and has a more fun and complex scoring system. I think its ugly compared to Giga Wing, Giga Wing 2 would have been the better game if it didn't look like crap. I'd say this deal is worth it.

You should give Giga Wing a try in MAME to see if you like it. It's one of my favorite shooters, but I can't really tell you if the trade's in your favor.

You will definitely take pride in owning/playing the original Capcom CPS2 version of Gigawing if you get your feet wet delving into the world of arcade PCBs. There's nothing like playing it on the proper arcade hardware/candy cab or Supergun setup. Even the four page arcade flyer that Capcom made for it's GW arcade game is a beaut to pore through & marvel at. Both the blue colored USA region & gray colored Asia versions of CPS2 GW are presented in all-English text for your reading pleasure.

There is a cool Gigawing 2 art gallery to peruse/unlock on the DC port. The opening CG movie intro shown in DC GW-2 is quite superb.

You can't go wrong with getting both DC ports of GW and GW-2 in one shot.

I wouldn't say they're rare, really. On Ebay they seem to be going for alright prices, nothing really too absurd. They're both good games; easier clears than most bullet hell games but scoring well takes some skill.

Definitely worth the trade in my eyes. Gigawing 1 and 2 are two of my most played shmups on DC and although I don't know how much the component cables and MGS are worth I can say both Gigawings are must haves for the system.

Well, you can get MGS3:S for $13 in "very good" condition on Amazon right now, so yeah, it's a great trade. I've only played the first Giga Wing, but I love it. Looks great, plays great, and sounds great (come on!).

I love both games. Don´t even know which one I love more, probably the second. The Giga Wings are quite easy to pick up, the score system is simple and intuitive (to understand, execution is the other part) which is great... got a little more complex with GW2. Graphics and music/sound are also good to me, but both very different in GW 1 and 2. Unfortunately the Dreamcast port of Giga Wing has rearranged music and ruined some of the better tracks.

Well it´s all a matter of taste, but I would take a deeper look. But I agree, they´re both not that rare or expensive.

Giga Wing is the Dynasty Warriors of shmups (in its approach to game design, not the amount of sequels it has).

This is not a compliment. As I'm DC-less, I've only played the first one, though.

Gigawing 2 is definitely a gem you won't play elsewhere - the first is easy to obtain if you're into arcade PCBs.

I'm a huge fan of both Gigawing 1+2, think of the series as a much more approachable Mars Matrix (another must have for DC).
I don't know about the cash value or fairness of the trade, but as far as games, I say go for it.

Ugly as fuck, but still fun to play if you're into the series.

I bought GW 1 & 2 with the intention of playing GigaWing 2, but instead got sucked into the first game. It's a bit underrated imo. Personally, I don't think the sequel is very good.

IMO, GW 1 is still the best in the series. Soooo satisfying absorbing bullets then shooting the back out. The aesthetic is also cooler. Love the Stage Clear music.

Let him insist that they're rare and that he's getting a good deal.

Wii component cables are cheap online and MGS3:S is $20 used at GameStop (and readily available, at least in my area).

Giga Wing 1 is awesome, plays well, has an easy-to-understand system and is quite chaotic. GW2 has a much different feel due to being in 3D, but is still good. Watch some videos of both games if you're on the fence.

Also I think it's surprising that nobody has mentioned GW2's four-player mode. It is a lot of fun no matter what kind of video games your friends like, due to the fact that there's so much going on at once.

Gigiwing 2's four-player mode has been mentioned before in other threads besides this one. ^_~
