Bringing a shmup to PS3 Home

Post by 8 1/2 »

Just before the holiday, NSI submitted our alpha build of a shmup we're building for PS3 Home. The game is called Titan's Terror, and is designed to be placed in the upcoming Home space for God of War III. It's a simple little game, but should be good (free) fun. I'll be back with some more updates when I know a solid release date. I served as Design Lead on this project, and we've been busting our ass to bring a quality game to Home. You may have also seen our work on the Ratchet and Clank space we did, which launched prior to A Crack In Time's release.

In Titan's Terror, you control a pegassus rider, and attempt to take down a raging Titan. You move your avatar to avoid his fists and other attacks in a manner not too far removed from a traditional hori shmup. It uses a dual analog set-up, allowing you to control your targeting reticule separately from the rider. Up to 8 players simultaneously (not same screen of course), with full leaderboard support to boot.

Here's a teaser screen:

Looks awesome. I have some questions:
- What is the release region? (just making sure)
- Will the Titan be the only enemy?

This is for a North American release for sure, but I don't know what Sony's full plans are. Seeing as how GOW III is such a huge game for them I'm sure we'll see it out in Europe too, but I'm not sure about Japan.

The Titan is the only thing you fight. It's designed to be a fairly short game, with high replayability, that ties into a meta-game persistent within the space. We have three games we're building for the space, and they all allow you to build up an income you can donate to a larger goal with the other players within the space. Lots of cool prizes to be earned for sure.

I hope that it would be released in 5th region too, since that's where I belong to

Nice. Sounds like something lots of PS Home users may really get into. I had my doubts about PS Home during its first beta year, but Irem has certainly shown that great work can be done in this space.

This is what I'm talking about. Game looks awesome. More devs should look at Home and PS3 as fertile ground for shmups.

Awesome, man! Did you ever think you'd be a design lead on a shmup for a company other than your own?!

Kudos Jon (8 1\2). It looks interesting to say the least and I am looking forward to trying it out.

It's funny because I've become sort of the "hardcore" guy at Nihilistic. Whenever the opportunity comes up to make a mini-game like this it's become the defacto response to just look at me and say, "Well, you're the only one who plays this sort of stuff..." It's been quite a blessing since I get a lot of slack to do what I wish with the game. This is obviously not my dream shmup, as it has to be designed to be very casual-accessible on Home, but it's a nice bullet-point to have on my resume for sure, and I'm not complaining about the work.

Now, to just learn Japanese...
