10 sold short of 8 million; more than a 20% drop from 7. I really, really don't think it's going to outperform 10.
You're assigning Chocobo Racing numbers to the first new FF in 12 years. You should be using the kind of numbers Tactics moved.

"To the first new FF in 12 years." Wow, man. You really hate where the series is going.
I personally don't think FF:G will sell that well. If it sells 2.5 million or more like the original FFT (w/o sales of the PSP version), I'd be surprised. The only people hyped about FF:G seem to be hardcore gamers. You're welcomed to prove me wrong a couple months after FF:G's release (to give it time to sell.) Make a thread or something.
Btw, FFT DS sold miserably (600k) compared to the original. I personally didn't buy any of the portable Tactics games because they don't live up to the original.

I will admit it is a different environment than when your choice of a GB rpg was SaGa or Last Bible, until years later when.... Pokemons...... came out. God, I remember when I had to play games in Japanese on an emulator since there was nothing else available here.
I had a vague feeling of Kind Of Want with FFT PSP, but that was because of the ~two new classes and only that. Knowing it was going to be the exact same game otherwise, plus a bit of slowdown, who could be moved to fullblown Do Want? Eh, and even then it sold almost as much as it's misshapen cousins on the other portables.
Reminds me of a recent interview where they expressed disappointment with the sales figures of Chrono Trigger DS. And it's a port with a bonus dungeon. It could have been on the GBA~! They're complaining over a near-free $10 million! What were they going to do with that money, and that market window - make a Chocobo Fighting game?

I'm curious to see if DQ 9 actually moves the 5 million number I've seen tossed around. It's certainly sold well so far, but 5 million is a pretty high target for the current JP market.

I'd like to hear more DQ9 impressions from those who are playing it.

Eugenics: you know it's right!
GameFaqs/Dragon's Den has that sort of thing pretty covered. I can tell you some basics, but I'm waiting for the English version:
The class system seems like a mash up of 3 and 8. Each class has five skill lines: 4 weapon skills, which might be repeated in another class's (Cleric and Mage shares Cane for example) and one class-specific skill set. These skills transfer over when you change class; the final Skill on the weapon lines allows you to equip that weapon in any class.
Spells are specified by class. If you're in the correct class, and meet the requirement level, it'll be available for use. So you won't get DQ6 style madness where everyone has Revive, Healall, Healus etc.
The character creation options are kind of threadbare. There's five body sizes, ten types of hair, color, skin tone and face, and a number of the faces are "joke" faces. The obvious Dragon Ball Z analogues you can make are SSJ2 Gohan, Krillian, and an Android 16ish mohawk guy. They obviously held back on the hair so they could add those cosplay wigs.
Um, there are optional bosses to fight in the endgame. Bosses from previous games. They apparently level up after you beat them, and become very powerful. Gaining additional turns, in addition to merely gaining stats.
Oh, and a FF-esque row feature, so bows aren't completely useless??
... and 18 emotes that can you can set your guy to do with the B button. With what looks like another 17 unlockable...
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.
Decided I wouldn't get sick of the game if I only blew a few hours on it.
The first anime cutscene is done from your character's point of view, and really makes the CGI from DQ7 look extra bad. I guess in the long tail, in many sequels from now, that's how they might want the games to look like.
One of the first epic quests you do involves picking up some horseshit from some guy's horsebarn. Heroic!
Died on the first boss because I am a chump - I spent some MP getting through the dungeon and didn't stock up on medical herbs. If I had avoided fights or been a little more prudent in the early game, I would've stomped him the first time around.
Am pretty sure this another game in the series that grinding won't be necessary until the bonus endgame, except for possibly a midboss that you'd need Healus to counter his pressure. Just assuming there's one of those since the last ~3-5 games had one.
Saw the little brown fairy girl that all the 2ch guys are neckbearding over. She replaces Trogdor from DQ8 as the mascot I suppose - showing up in your accomplishments/bestiary screens. Not being assaulted by 90's Japanese fashion fads, the level of her annoyance was mysteriously very bearable for me.
It's nice to see a day/night cycle again.
Went up to Luisa's Tavern, where you can make your other party members. The prebuilt guys who are already there have slightly better than the default gear - leather armor, a robe, and a leather helmet across the three of them I think. New guys are made with just a basic weapon, shoes, and clothes. I guess that's to discourage a DQ3-esque exploit where you build Senshis and sell off their leather armor. The ~15 gold you make off of selling cypress sticks and clothes is obviously way less than what you can make by killing something.
Hitting something with a staff gave my Wizard lady 1mp. She also couldn't physically hit anything when in the back row - I'm assuming her attack power was just too low. Blaze did 15 damage right off, which might scale up to 30 damage if it caps like in DQ8. I hope they've better balanced attack magic this time - it's been pretty underwhelming since DQ6 and its dominant attack skills.
I think it's cute how the Wizard has a 0 stat in the Healing Spell Power stat and the Cleric has a 0 in Attack Magic. The "Traveling Performer" class you start out as is probably the closest thing to the classic hero class in the game.
There is also a quest system, which I think is mostly optional.
Gender-specific gear returns. Which makes me wonder why that maid's uniform can be equipped by men...
Even from near the start there is a good spread of gear to choose from - like gloves that increase defense or dexterity.
They put the extra screen real estate to work. The map is very nice. And the item information is more.. informative. Obviously that'll be truncated a bit when ported, since our alphabet isn't as dense.
The impression I've got is this game removes a lot of the groin kicking the series had up to now. Being able to avoid monsters in the field feels wonderful. You can save your skillpoints and spend them when and on what you want to. And the biggest, most wonderful change of all:
Equipment is stored in its own little abstracted bag. You don't have to fiddle around with the annoying item system to move gear into a dude's inventory and then equip it. You just pick what you want from everything you own (and it automatically filters out things you can't equip) from the equip screen.
Dungeons don't seem to have completely pointless dead ends.
It feels like a beefed up DQ3, with DQ8-style scenerios. The only main negative I can think of is it takes about a second longer than DQ8 to perform an action in combat, and that stuff tends to add up. You can judge the quality of a JRPG by how long it takes it to do a "ATTACK" command.
It'd probably be very reasonable to think of this as the best game in the series.

I'm definitely having fun, but that's a pretty brave statement right there.

Still nothing about this game-even during TGS they showed nothing! AFIK, this is a Wii-exclusive title. I'm a Dragon Quest nut, and I can't wait to see or hear some more about this title.

This is on DS.
My bad, I was thinking about X.

Time to dig up this old thread. I finally beat Dragon Quest IX after dropping it for a while. Usually when I stop playing an RPG I don't pick it up again, but in this case, I wanted to. After playing through the whole thing, I think I'd give it an 8.5/10. It's a good game - a really good one - but not quite great. It doesn't feel like it strays very far off the path from other DQ games overall. Random thoughts in separate paragraphs:
The biggest change is definitely the monsters being shown on the map and being avoidable. This is a big plus when you're trying to scrape up all the treasure from an area you've already been through, but you do need to fight quite a bit to be strong enough to handle the bosses, so don't think of it as a chance to fight that much less.
Camera not being able to swing 360 didn't bother me much. I stopped caring about that after just a little while, although it seems to drive some people nuts. Not really sure why.
Job system is pretty normal DQ material. I'm not sure what the point of several of the jobs (or weapon types, for that matter) is, as they just seem inferior to other choices. Eg, I see no reason to be a thief or a performer (not sure what they'll call it in English). Offensive magic was pretty weak compared to previous games, as the mages have rather large gaps between when they get spells. Being able to carry passive status bonuses between jobs was nice. I had a good time leveling up my guys, more than I expected.
The alchemy system was traditional DQ stuff. You could beat the whole game without making a single item if you wanted, but you can get a boost by making better stuff for your characters when the opportunity presents itself.
The "quests" you get run the gamut from fun and rewarding to repetitive and dull. There's a LOT of them (I think there's like 150 if you count the internet-unlocked ones), so the sheer volume is pretty nice.
Storyline is overall decent for a DQ game. The fact that none of your characters have a personality at all (see DQ 1-3 for reference) was unfortunate, I like it when they have one and have flavor dialogue as the game goes on. The game does kinda-sorta have a religious theme later in the game that's Christian-esque in some ways. A few things happen that might annoy the religious nuts out there, but I doubt any of them will put in the 40+ hours into the game you need to get that far.
Never got to try it multiplayer, so I can't comment on that aspect of the game.
Overall, a fun time. I believe it's coming out in English in 2010 and is well worth a look if you like JRPGs.

Eh, it's obviously a mish-mash of a ghetto version of the Hero class and the olde Jester classes. The balance of this series has always been wonky - but it is nice to have a couple ghetto classes for variety. At least it isn't as boring as the DQ3 Merchant class, non?
Also as I get older I've come to dislike the "higher tier class" mechanic in games.

Ironically, the hero starts off as a performer and is stuck in it until you get far enough to change jobs. This is more for amusement than anything else, as at lower levels it's an okay job. I believe it's better than the jester was, but it's been a loooooong time since I've played DQ 3. (Was that in any other than 3?)
The higher tier classes all require a quest to unlock, which makes them feel more ... I dunno, "rare"? They're strong enough that you'll probably use at least a few of them - one isn't unlocked until near the end of the game though, which makes it a bit less meaningful.

DQ4 - Taloon the merchant has random things he can do on his turn
DQ5 - Been too long since I've played and game too generic to remember
DQ6 - Yes.
DQ7 - Double yes.
DQ8 - Many of the skills are still there.
Ah, remember the Shepard class remember remember remember? DQ7 had a lot of half assing it when it came to trying to make new classes.

I abandoned that job pretty quick, so I don't know. It took my priest a long time to get the party heal spell, so if they do, it's probably at some absurdly high level.

This article was posted August 10, 2009--subsequently,Squeenix has copyrighted the title for US and European release. Note this does not mean it will definitely come out, but clearly the thought was at least going through their brains.

Never finished a DQ game, but I own DQ8 which I picked up for peanuts. Will have to play it through after I'm done with Persona 4 as I am a RPG nut and feel like I have a rather large DQ void that needs filling.
DQ8 may not be the best DQ game but it has a beautiful presentation, great music. Definitely one of my favorite PS2 titles.

I did play it briefly before but had a console breakdown so never got to carry on. I found the presentation charming and the world map was full of character. Getting quite excited about playing it now.
I'm 99.9% certain it will see an English release in the US at the very least, and probably in Europe as well. If you can only play one DQ for some reason, I'd say go for 8 over 9, but 9 is a good game as well. Play both if you've got the money and time (time will probably be harder to get, DQ games are long )

Apparently the game is being released in the US by Nintendo themselves and not Square Enix, which is odd. I'm curious how that came about. I hope they don't try and release it around another big game's release date, as it'd be a shame if this one gets overlooked. (Who the hell decided to launch other big JRPGs within a week of FF13? ... Sorry, getting off topic...)

There's another big RPG release during the summer?
As far as the partnership with Nintendo, maybe SE just needed a little extra push to bring it over here. Nintendo might be trying to keep the DS a viable option for as long as possible, and if that's the reason why, I'll drink to that. On the other hand, I'm sure SE would have brought it out eventually anyway, it's probably just some sort of deal where Nintendo takes some of the extra load. Anyone know if this applies to the European version as well?
