Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
I remember seeing an animated movie when I was 4 years old (1979!) about a kid who goes on a space adventure with a guy who owns a (steampunk?) spaceship. The spaceship captain seems to be this cool, slick badass whose companion is a crow on his shoulder. The kid has a dog called Mac or Mack who also accompanies them on the trip. I guess their mission was to rescue a princess and her kingdom from an army of robots bent on controlling their whole planet.
Along the way, they cross paths with a space phenomenon (comet or black hole) that causes them to regress in age temporarily. The kid becomes a baby, the dog a pup, and the crow into an egg. The captain wasn't affected or he didn't regress that much, and he manages to break the ship free.
Upon liberating the planet from all the robots, the kid wakes up and it turns out all of it was a dream based on stuff he's seen before: The dog exists but doesn't talk like in his dream (it's his pet), and the captain turned out to be either an old street performer or vendor pushing a cart, with a pet crow. After greeting the old man, the kid gets up and goes in search of his friends, calling his dog who promptly follows him, ending the movie. The kid seems to live in England or France during the late 1800's.
By the style of the animation (cartoony and not realistic like Matsumoto's), I think it was probably made by TOEI. Searches have proven fruitless.
Thanks.

I'm curious now, too.
Re: Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
It doesn't sound familiar. About all I can say to narrow it down is that if it was 1979 then it must have been a theatrical feature, as the first OAV was released in 1983. I have a book somewhere that has synopses of every OAV and theatrical anime released in the 80s and early 90s, but I don't think it goes as far back as the 70s.

A long shot, but could it be Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon?
Re: Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
waits to see what this mystery anime is as well

Re: Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
YES, THAT'S THE ONE!
Thanks, BM! My memories of the movie are mostly accurate after seeing the youtube clip. Heck, even the "Rise, robots, rise" montage was still on the back room of my brain. The cross, clown-style eyes on the robots, the princess' little feet and the robot shell they had put themselves into, I knew I had seen this! I was sure Captain Gulliver was more of a badass, but probably I mixed it with another series. I knew it had to be TOEI!
Thanks again.

Ooh, this looks interesting. I think I'll look into this.

whatThis raises a troubling question or two. While Miyazaki never intended it, Clarisse is often viewed as the start of the moe fan base, that cuteness-fetishizing movement that’s currently ruining Japan’s anime industry by heaping praise and money upon mediocre shows about goo-goo-eyed cartoon preteens. Can we trace this odious cult back to the Star of Hope’s princess? Is every freakish, pedophile-courting modern moe series really the result of Gulliver’s Travels Beyond the Moon?

Re: Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
I also have an anime which I want to identify
From what I remember:
- The graphics style seems to be 70s - early 80s
- There are two main characters: a girl riding a Pegasus and a girl riding a robot horse that has afterburners in its hooves
- One of the final scenes takes place among the giant gears
- According to the Russian dub, the title of this should be 'The Queen of the Dawn and the Queen of Space' or something similar

In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

Sounds like something in the style of Matsumoto.

Sounds like it could be Queen Esmerilda...or something similar. I could be wrong though. Yeah, it does sound like Matsumoto-type of anime. ^_~EinhanderZwei wrote:I also have an anime which I want to identify

Unfortunately it's not... The characters in the anime that I'm talking about were drawn close to loli style

Re: Help me remember this anime/OVA's name.
Can this become the "identify an obscure anime I never caught the title of when I was younger" thread?
I've got one: Medieval setting; one character had a crystal sword; aesthetic was very dark and grimy. Looked late-80s. The sword could shoot a cutting wave along the ground. This is a preview I would watch at the end of the Cantonese VHS release of Dragonball Z Movie 7, Super Android 13.

wow. That reminds me a lot of the art style used in Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.BulletMagnet wrote:A long shot, but could it be Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon?
