Japanese first-person shooters

Post by EinhanderZwei »

At first I thought that I'll post this in FPS thread, but later decided to create a separate one...

Yeah, I know that FPS was never a popular genre in Japan, both in terms of gaming and development. Still I am very curious, are there any games of that genre made in Japan other than:

- Coded Arms
- Coded Arms: Contagion
- Maken X (OK, it's not shooter, but still a first person action game)
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

Outtrigger was developed by Sega AM2

There's also that new TF2-alike game by Taito, Cyber Diver

Sega's making that new mech one that looks pretty FPSsy too. And Namco had one in the mid/late 90s which played more like a tank game (the one that takes your picture).

Outtrigger is a good game if you've got a mouse handy. If you don't have a mouse, it's pretty terrible.

Breakdown (Xbox / Namco). Another that's more of a FPP (first-person puncher).

Can you count the Gundam Dreamcast game as an FPS? Minus the slow movement speed, it pretty much plays like one.

Define FPS, does stuff like the following count?

Silent Debuggers - PC-Engine 1991

Heck yeah, that was an awesome game. Though in terms of controls it's more like dungeon crawler + Operation Wolf, but whatever, it counts :D

...And actually if Silent Debuggers counts, then so do Laser Invasion and Resident Evil Survivor

We should probably not count games which have a first person view but are not on-foot 3d shooters (like mech or racing games), and not count orthogonal first person engines like Bard's Tale. I think they're way too different.

The only way to play FPS: Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid%C5%8D_ ... _no_Kizuna

Here's some footage from inside the game pod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qStFOfc0U0 (+ some random Japan entertainment stuff later in the video)

There's Taito's 1992 game Gunbuster, which I never liked. I haven't seen the anime but it never was really apparent how it could tie into the show.

Good call on Breakdown; I need to get through the rest of that. Gunplay is rather weak but it has some other interesting stuff going on, plus the story is appropriately trippy.

There's a FPS on the Virtual Boy (at least one) made by a Japanese company, something Mansion. One of the rares I believe (don't think it got a US release).

Well, there's Elebits on the Wii, which is kind of an FPS puzzle game. Also, the Metroid Prime games, while developed by Retro Studios in Texas, were directed by some Nintendo guy (too lazy to look up his name). In fact, Retro started the game as a 3PS, but then Miyamoto told them they needed to make it an FPS (presumably because the 3PS builds sucked).

Also, mind that 3PS couldn't allow that neat-as-hell reflection effect for Her Majestic Divinity's face

There is something about a Japanese-developed FPS that really turns me on. I want some more info on this!

Is that one of the effects missing in the Wii port?

You get the achievements system as a bonus, though...

Actually, a more interesting question would be why FPS were never a popular genre in Japan, both in terms of gaming and development?!

AFAIK, Japanese gamers have serious differences in gaming tastes than North Americans/Europeans. For example, they play much more shmups, dating sims and RPGs than the gamers in any other country, as well as have not many PCs compared to NA/Europe. FPS is always considered a milestone PC genre with nice exceptions (early Medal of Honor, PowerSlave (originally developed for Saturn), Coded Arms, Killzone 2, Darkwatch, Halo, TimeSplitters) popping out here and there, so it's simple logic: not many PCs + no much interest in FPSes = no particular need for Japanese devs to develop FPSes. Again, there are exceptions like Counter-Strike Zero and Half-Life 2: Survivor - both being arcade ports of PC games

I assume nowadays the things have changed. So, Japanese gamers, correct me if I'm wrong :)

Hudson's Onslaught for WiiWare is actually pretty good. Pretty generic, but I'm easy to please.

Mansion of Innsmouth or something along those lines (though the Engrish text on the box has it as "Insmouse". Based loosely on the H.P. Lovecraft story "Shadow over Innsmouth", except for the entire game you're wandering around the titular mansion instead of the decrepit town of Innsmouth from the story. So it might not have much more in common than the name and fish-men. Has a sort of Darius or Outrun-like multiple stage progression.
