Space Invaders interview link

Post by spadgy »

So, as some of you know, I interviewed the creative director of Space Invaders: Infinity Gene.

Taito’s Reisuke Ishida made for a very good interviewee, and while I feel meek saying this about some of my own work, the interview makes for a great read (thanks to Ishida's input. I don't deserve the credit!).

Ishida talks about some really interesting stuff, like the influence of RayCrisis, how to best approach setting the difficulty of a shmup, Zuntata, how RPGs can influence shmups, and how to approach such an iconic, copied and excessively 'remade' game.

Here's the interview!

This originally appeared on pages 60 and 61 of the print edition of Develop magazine. You can get a PDF of the whole issue, including the interview, here!

I hope you all like it.

Oh - and finally, thanks to everybody in this thread who suggested questions. It was a great help - I owe you a beer Dragoforce - You gave me my opening question!

Yeah - it was a bit of a wait. Getting an interview through translation and back, and then subbed, but on a page and sent to the printers, before waiting for the mag to reach the subscribers was a bit of a time-eating process, but hopefully people enjoy the results...

Not to hijack talk about spadgy's interview (good job, by the way!), but on a related note, 1up.com also has an interview with Ishida up. Interesting stuff, pretty good shooter article from such a mainstream source.

In this interview, Ishida talks a lot about the lack of accessibility of the danmaku style and how that relates to Infinity Gene (and how he hopes Infinity Gene will be a good gateway shooter that gets more people into the genre). Also a really interesting quote where after the interviewer mentioning Metal Black, Ishida specifically says he "borrowed some elements from Metal Black" for Infinity Gene (hinting at the "evolution" themes of both games).

No worries neojma, and thanks for the new link. I wish I could have asked far more broader shooter based questions. That makes for a great read.
