But at 5 frames per second.

I'm not sure how much I trust that. First, it's PSM - they're not exactly what I'd call a great magazine - and second, that fact doesn't make much sense anyway. They got some hardware together that's 12 times faster than the real PS3 and used the same engine just to put together a demo? Why bother? Pre-render it and claim it's footage based on preliminary hardware, that's what everyone else does.

Didn't a Sony rep even come out and say it was all CG?

Apparently the alpha kit is 25% of the power of the PS3.. Thats apparently the hardware that rendered the footage.

If it's 25% the final system's power, shouldn't it have reached 25% (that is, 1/4) of the full framerate? But they accelerated it 12x (from 5 to 60 fps).

That question was asked too.

Supposedly tweaking the code was not necessary as it was made for E3 to be a tech demo in a very short time period. There is no profits in tech demos so they just did what they did and speeded it all up to save time and money.

If it had run at 10fps at 25% power tweaked, that would represent a respectable 40fps on the final PS3 hardware. Remember that during a consoles lifespan, tweaking code can reap massive rewards. The PS2 is now showing a considerable jump in performance matching the best any console has to offer, which is remarkable considering the specifications.

Its likely that in 3 or 4 years time the PS3 will be capable of Killzone 2 at 60fps. But certainly not on US launch day.

Let me just point out that the Killzone video IS pre-rendered cg footage. This has been confirmed by Guerilla Games (there's an interview with the artist who made it knocking around somewhere too), and various other places like IGN etc. If anyone can recall the PS1 and PS2 launches, Sony tried this pisspoor tactic then too.

If you'll note any of the Sony comments, they will say it's .representative of what the PS3 can do. i.e. this is a marketing gut toalking bollox as usual.

Is the Killzone sequence a fair example of what people can expect from realtime gameplay on PlayStation 3?

Jan-Bart:Yeah, it's basically a representation of the look and feel of the game we're trying to make.

All this said, check out the unreal on PS3 stuff out there - Epic have confirmed many times that it is running real time.

God, I really wish this topic could be beat into the ground some more, but i just don't think there's any more water left to squeeze from the ol' stone.

That said, the Killzone 2 trailer DID make me pick up Killzone and play through it. Not a $50 game (not by a fucking longshot), but if you see it for $15-$20, check it out.

Infact, here's some screencaps i shot while i was going through it last week:

Mall levels are cool
Image

This segment was really sweet
Image

Shot from inside one of the amphibious assault craft. You have to defend against a beach assault multiple times on one stage and it's quite intense
Image

Going underneath a bridge to blow it up
Image

Blew this fucker up with a grenade and his head got lodged into the ceiling
Image

The enemy designs are flippin' sweet
Image

Activating the shuttle
Image

Battle in the space station
Image

Ingame clock is broken. I didn't spend ~70 hours playing

It's not, I just got a killer deal from a friend. Actually, it was more of a swap.. brand new copy of Katamari Damacy (I preordered three copies, one for me, one for a friend, and one in case it became hard to find and someone else wanted it) for a brand new copy of Killzone (he didn't say it was brand new..i assumed it'd be a used copy).

Not a bad swap at all (Katamari has been sitting in a footlocker for months, begging for a home).

Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy in just over a week! HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

Off-topic, but does anyone realize how closely the Killzone symbol, and even the enemy design, resemble the designs in Psi-Ops? Seriously, when I saw the Killzone ad on tv, I thought "Kickass! Psi-Ops 2". But no...

the Helghast's symbol also looks rather similar to the new age swastika in Ring of Red.
