Best horizontal shmup

What is considered the best horizontal shmup? I want to purchase my first shmup but run all my pcb's off my SG and 36 inch crt which cannot rotate.

Considered by whom? You know you're going to get a lot of different replies.

Start with R-Type.

Yeah, i know I'm going to get a lot of responses. I am finally getting my first shmup and want to make a solid choice, something I will not want to sell or get sick of. Unfortunately, i have to stick with the horizontals. Does cave have any good horizontals. What about RS or any of the cps2 games? Does these run horizontal or do you need to rotate?

So far, thanks. Theirs a Darius Gaiden right now on ebay for $150. Good price? Not sure if its original or not, but assuming it is.

r-type delta is the best horisontal shooter there is, thread over.

In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

Good call Bill, those are actually some of my favorite games. I guess having a cab stuff in Yoko is not a complete loss after all :wink:

Pulstar and Blazing Star seem to have a decent following too for real Hori games.

people are mentioning games I thought never had arcade releases already. I'm going to go ahead and assume he means anything by this point.

I don't know why Hellfire isn't more popular, but I'm still going to say Hellfire. Of course R-Type, if you really haven't played it yet :)

I'll just say the ones I like: R-Type [and each game before Final is better than the one before it], Darius [G and Gaiden] and Progear.
Einhander is pretty nice, I just don't play it much [namely because I don't have it anymore...].

[Notice the lack of Gradius in my list, I really don't like Gradius.]

R-Type and X-Multiply are my favorite horizontal shmups. I don't think anyone's mentioned Dragon Breed or Gradius II (the best in its series, imho).
