It seems the purpose of the thread wasn't to list all of the shmup games available, but there's a lot of others to consider, whether some people would consider them "shmups" or whether they are to be considered "good" is up in the air I guess, but there are others out there
Actually it is, this why I listed Crescendo Symphony even though it's crap. Anyway thanks much for the list, I updated it.
Haha, nice touch on the SEIZURE thing for Scramble. Thankfully when you have the updated graphics on for the game, the seizure factor goes down considerably. There's also a lot of other shmups on the indie games channel, but none of them come as close to being kinda legitimate as Crecendo Symphony and Platypus, so they're really not worth mentioning.

Leave Home is actually pretty good (on the Indie Games section). It's procedural, so the game/levels change depending on how good you're doing. There are loads of references to shmups in there:

I was actually about to post that as well, Leave Home is pretty well made as well. I tried all the other shmups though, and besides the ones we mentioned, they're absolutely awful and some are just plain unfinished.

Ikaruga
Death Smiles
Mushihimesama Futari

While not on the same level as those listed above-
Castle Shikigami III is pretty good.

After that, there is the "wait and sees"
ESPGaluda II
Ketsui
DoDonPachi DOJBLEX(if the patch fixes the problems)
RayStorm HD(if all goes well with the port)

Lots of people like the Raiden games. I don't, but that's just me.

Holding off buying this if you own a J-NTSC is quite stupid IMHO. I wonder how many people dissing this' actually tried the XMODE. I love it and my only real issue with this game is the loading in the menus and the unresponsiveness of them (having to press HOME button all the time in my case).

X-Mode is indeed excellent, and definitely reason alone to buy that package. Bit of effort to get access to it though (6 hours of play in any of the other modes).

I see Raiden Fighters Aces is up on the "Games on Demand" area of the Japanese site. I suppose it's still region locked . . . :?:

Not only is it region-locked, but even if you had a JP 360, you still won't be able to get it due to IP restrictions.

Senko no Ronde is definitely worth a look. Even if you don't like it, it's a interesting idea and can be had for under $5.

This is actually not correct. It's true that the GoD games are region locked, but you *can* download them from outside Japan (circumvent the IP lock) using a VPN. I've tested it from within the UK (downloaded RFA from the JPN store and Halo from the Asian store onto my JPN 360), and it works.

Are they playable without the VPN once they're downloaded then?

Yes. The IP check only occurs at the very start and the very end of the download.

How do you purchase them, though, don't you have to have a Japanese credit card? Since games on demand charge an actual price, not MS points.

You can purchase them using Japanese Microsoft Points (just press Y on the purchase screen to pay with points instead of credit card).

Gotcha, though I don't think there's any games I need off there, though.

Still not much love for Raiden IV.

It's one of my favourite shmups ever and (here I go again!) the best Double Play shooter there is. More people should try it that way (one player controlling both ships.).

That's all you need right there. If Ketsui makes it out and is of great quality, then add that as well.

I'll be waiting to see if Ketsui ever makes it out before I invest in a Japanese 360. I know this is NOT the place to talk about this, but is it possible to mod my current 360 to play imported games?

Don't mod, buy a japanese Arcade Console and use your American HD on it.

It's possible, but not advisable. Moding your 360 will almost certainly get you banned from Live at some point.

Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
Death Smiles
Shikigami no Shiro III
Shooting Love 200X
Raiden IV

Honestly, these are some of the finest shooters I've played. There is a real temptation to include all of them on my top 25 list this year, but at the same time it seems crazy to devote such a significant portion of my list to games from this time now, so far removed from the golden age of shmups.

Just checked, still no patch. I did patch Shikigami No Shiro 3 however.

It doesn't count as that is an add-on to the disc based game, and it's pretty much the same game as Death Smiles whitout the MBL add-on.

I got all of these games, the only one missing is Raiden IV, I wanted to buy it but the american version is region locked by UFO Interactive, just like they region-locked Way of the Samurai 3 and Raiden Fighter Aces and no way I am paying 74 bucks for the JAP version.

I bet you can get a used copy here if you keep an eye open in the trading forum or post a wanted thread there. Plenty of us here imported it before it became a domestic release.
