Hated the game, but Goldrunner on the Amiga/C64 had an amazing Rob Hubbard theme tune.

I reworked it a while back and plonked it on YouTube today:

Wohoo. Lemon64 has music for most C64 games - here's the X-Out page;

Click 'listen online' and skip to track 14. Awesome.

Huelsbeck's soundtracks are great in general, and not just his Amiga music.
Katakis on C64 extremely good, too. I know, the music of level 5 is "inspired" by Delta Force; but the rest of the soundtrack is awesome, as well.

I'm a big fan of Chris Hulsbeck. Damn near everything he's done is amazing, especially his Apidya arrangements.

For example:

02-war-at-meadow-s-edge.mp3 - 6.99MB

03-the-pond.mp3 - 6.10MB

04-sewer-s-blast.mp3 - 7.12MB

06-boss-panic.mp3 - 6.00MB

Nice one, mate.

The one the bosses in Metal Black make when they die is fantastic, too. As is the animation! Those battles are works of shmuppy impressionist art. :P

I love 'Storm of Fine Weather' from Under Defeat. This does not appear to be a popular view. :(

Dude, that's one of the coolest Castlevania songs, but no one played the game so its great music is forgotten. Chronicles had some excellent music.

But in shmups, I love the theme in stage 3 of Guwange. It's just gorgeous, and fits the mystical Asian theme of the game perfectly. Also love any of the music from the first Raiden, it always gets me pumped, and any Gradius V music, since I'm sorta a Sakimoto fanboy. Stage 4 of ESPGaluda is also gorgeous. Also love the Gekirindan soundtrack, the main theme makes me feel nostalgic for some reason.

Easy!

Music:
- Level 1 tunes from R-Type (show me the fucker that dislikes it), Spriggan 1, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade
- ALL tracks from MUSHA Aleste and The Guardian Legend
- Gate of Thunder intro, main theme and a couple of level tunes
- 'I-DA-TEN' song from Cho Aniki

SFX:
- 'I'll be back' voice clip from Soldier Blade
- Narrator in DonPachi

Will list more once I remember... :)
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

From recent listenings, I'd have to mention Hyakutaro Tsukumo's "Steel of Destiny" (Thunder Force V) and Hitoshi Sakimoto's "Phoenix Sea Revolution" (Soukyugurentai) as my favourite stage and boss tracks, respectively. The latter sounds almost Zuntata-like, love it.

I'm a sucker for ESP Ra.De.'s explosion sfx. So goddamn meaty.

QFT! That creepy howl accompanied by a blast of rushing colour (and the boss' thrashing silhouette) is so satisfying at the end of a tough fight.

edit: ah, WTF am I thinking. Must give respect to Shinji Hosoe's Dragon Spirit OST, particularly the urgency and incredible synth-soloing of "Volcano."

My favourites would be...

music:
Axelay
Parodius Da!
Thunder Force III & IV
Subterrania
Zero Wing
Bio Hazard Battle (only stage 3, awesome atmosphere)
Gaiares (some tracks)
Giga Wing 2 (especially stage 4 and 7)
Giga Wing (air carrier + stage 6 and 7 --> air carrier and stage 7 were so brutally ruined in the Dreamcast version :( )
Mushihimesama Futari (stage 5 and final boss)

sound/voice:
Donpachi (I love the voice, too)
Under Defeat (explosions sounds are great, the hilarious German is also cool somehow ;) )

Definitely! When I was practicing for a single-credit run a couple of years ago, I'd see that stuff every time I closed my eyes. The first boss's thrashing is particularly creepy when you're half asleep.

Back on topic, I've actually been listening to the Image Fight soundtrack a fair bit, lately. It has some really great tunes. I even like the massively silly one that plays when you start your first 'real' mission.

Wonderful soundtrack. I was amazed that I hadn't heard more about it when I tried it out. "Twilight Express" is incredible. Kind of chiptune you can immediately hear being played by a full band, guitars keys drums etc.
