Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
I'm sure everyone of us has a game that he considers God-awful in everything, but finds beating it pretty fun. Usually in such cases we say: 'Hmm, this game wasn't so bad after all'. But what about the games that are definitely bad (and you still consider them bad after the credits roll), but you could not resist playing them and switching to something better?
For me such game is definitely Maken Shao (PS2 3rd person remake of Dreamcast's Maken X - google for more details). I still consider its graphics outdated, plot boring, gameplay monotonous, endings unrewarding and voiceovers embarassing. But hell, I do not regret any minute I've spent playing it, and after seeing 2 of the 7 endings (of course I didn't care for unlocking the rest of them) I was and still am feeling strangely satisfied. To make a long story short: I consider this game shit, but I enjoyed playing this shit! Maybe I'll even see other 5 endings someday
Another examples (for me and me only, of course) would be R-Type DX for Game Boy, Metal Slugs 4-6 and Resident Evil Survivor - most tragic is the latter
And does anyone have something similar towards the bad games (s)he played?

Fighting Force for N64 which wasn't that bad but is still somewhat redundant. I mainly had to beat it because the thing freezed on me when I was a kid while I had 3 extends towards the end of the game.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Hmm, probably a few. To be honest there are levels of mediocrity I'm willing to accept with no regrets - if something is outright bad I'll never play it far enough to regret it.
I don't regret playing through Crows: The Battle Action, even though its value doesn't reflect its quality.
Killzone 1 I almost regretted, but I can deal with the fact I finished it.
I still think Coryoon is massively overrated too - perhaps something to do with its price. I finished that on my first go, so no chances to consider any regret... except maybe for the money it cost me.

Heh, for the price factor I'll have to mention Crysis and Tsunami 20-whatever-the-year-in-its-title-I-can't-remember. Though they're not type of games that this topic is dedicated to, since I regret playing them... even with the cheat codes!Skykid wrote:I finished that on my first go, so no chances to consider any regret... except maybe for the money it cost me.

Strider Returns: Journey From Darkness
I'll probably not be playing it again, but at least I managed to complete it. The graphics are bland, and the pacing is definitely slower than the original Strider. Bland design, boring level layouts, and cheap traps drive the final nail in the coffin. The laser maze in stage 2 will murder you every second until you memorize the pattern - it's not just timing. Although I heard it sucked, I just had to try it for myself.
If you do try it, use the original sword and not the shitty new default one. At least Tiertex (ugh...) threw in some voices. They're fairly clear, but the voice acting sucks and probably wasted a good chunk of the 8 Megabits.

Yeah I beat KZ1 as well, not a very good game honestly, even for its time. Came out after Half-Life and HL is much better.Skykid wrote:

The first game I ever really played was when I was real little my babysitter had a sega genesis and I used to love playing Altered-Beast. When I went back to it the nostalgia is great but the game sucks pretty bad.
I can't really think of anything else, maybe some old DC games.

Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Recently went through Magna Carta 2 - pretty mediocre in most ways (though not outright bad), but for some reason i felt compelled to finish it, even though my copy didn't cost me a penny. About as apt an example as I can think of off the cuff.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Rastan for the SMS. I got to the place where I could jam through it easily, but it really was an absolutely *crappy* translation of the arcade game, and overall, it was a lousy game. It was one of those "Well, I've already spent my money on it" moments when I was younger, and darned if it didn't piss me off enough that I'd bought it to make me keep playing it and get my money's worth. Some victories are just so hollow you know you're a loser even when you're that young.

I don't regret a lot of the bad games I've played because I've gotten them for free instead of having paid full price back in the day, you see. :>

Dave Mirra BMX on the Dreamcast. I had a ripped copy that was missing the movies and music.
Glitchy, buggy, appalling frame rate issues - ugly as hell to look at and fiddly to play.
But because it was missing the background music, very zen in play. Almost CAVE like slowdown. Quite a tough challenge too, took me a long time to 100% it.
Totally crap game, but one of the best times I had on the Dreamcast. The sequels fix the glitches and slowdown, and as a result are absolute rubbish with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I absoutly love Rastan on the Sega Master System! I rate it as one of the SMS best games… I never play the arcade version until on the Taito Legends title… and I don't like it…boagman wrote:Rastan for the SMS. as for that bad game that I play to completion and still enjoy… that game is Deep Blue on the Turbo Grafx - 16…

Pokemon Crystal. Been playing this recently on my PSP via Rin. Soo many problems with the game, yet it is like crack.

Yoshinoya for the PS2. Still put it on when people are over for a novelty I guess.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Oh, dude...no stinking *way* is it anywhere *near* as unfair or difficult as Deep Blue on the TG16. I could (still can?) get through Rastan on the SMS on one life, and I'm pretty darned sure that I could play it through without being hit (though I can't help swallowing the "poisonous air" in the caves of the last two boss dragons). Perhaps that's why I consider the game to be bad: I expected the game to be like the arcade original, which I *did* play before playing the SMS version.Sonic R wrote:I absoutly love Rastan on the Sega Master System! But comparing it to Deep Blue? Oh, dude...not even in the same hemisphere.
When it comes to the SMS, there are several games that I think are darned great, the tops being R-Type (with Secret Stage!) and one kick-tail version of Alien Syndrome, which very well may have been *better* than the arcade original, though obviously not graphically. Rastan would be a pretty clear also-ran...but not one that I really regret playing. But buying? You bet.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Yeah, I thought that their statement was far too baby-with-the-bathwater myself. I mean, not just MR, but how about Heavy Barrel? Or even Spinmaster (short as it may be)? Or Wind Jammers?EinhanderZwei wrote:Even Midnight Resistance?louisg wrote:EDIT: and anything arcade by Data East too
Data East might not be anyone's favorite company, but they've made some decidedly good games in their time, that's for darned sure.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Yeah, Heavy Barrel, Midnight Resistance, and Bloody Wolf (tg16) are all good. But, very similarly to Midway, there is something kind of half-baked about them. There's even a good case for Bad Dudes. But, they are definitely not slick games, and often are just a little more than glitchy feeling. I think it really is pretty similar to Midway or the late days of Atari in terms of creating very fun but shallow, occasionally problematic, and choppy games.

Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
Wow. If for no other game that I mentioned, the Wind Jammers fans will pretty much crucify you for saying such things. It may well be DE's finest hour to a whole bunch of people. I prefer the others I mentioned (as well as MR), but still: sweeping all things DE into the "bad game" door seems unreasonable.louisg wrote:Yeah, Heavy Barrel, Midnight Resistance, and Bloody Wolf (tg16) are all good. Plus, you'll need to further define the era of "Midway" that you're talking about, there.
Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
I'm mostly thinking of mid-to-late-90s, but I remember many games they've done besides Spy Hunter feeling pretty funky. I'm having trouble thinking of specifics though.boagman wrote: Plus, you'll need to further define the era of "Midway" that you're talking about, there.

Re: Bad games that you DON'T regret that you've played
The Earth Defend (aka Earth Defense). Total crap Genesis shmup, with bosses that are poorly designed & take WAY too many hits, but I don't regret the $5 I spent on it (complete!), nor do I regret the whole go-through I did (no 1CC here, I just continued endlessly). It was a good exercise in reminding me of how many of the games I have that I get easily frustrated are at least well designed pieces of software, instead of this steaming pile. Good for a run once in a great while when you're feeling like the game currently handing you your butt might not be all it's cracked up to be.

One more game, and again for PS2: Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. Well, its graphics are actually okay, gameplay is addicting and stuff... But zero difficulty?! C'mon, it's fucking CASTLEVANIA! That's what ruined it for me. But after all it's a decent startup for the series' chronology - the plot met my expectations

Nice topic! I'll go with Two Worlds, the self-proclaimed "Oblivion on steroids." Even with horses that ride like a hippie sled on LSD and a final cutscene that glitches out every character that's supposed to be displayed I still beat it in one 13 hour session haha!
