Can the PS3 console support a 1TB or 2TB HDD?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Was wondering if anyone has upgraded their PS3's internal HDD to 1 Terabyte HDD or 2TB HDD? Or would a smaller HDD be better? I should ask what is the largest sized HDD that it can handle? I've got one of those 1st-gen USA region PS3 consoles with the 60GB HDD setup & backwards compatibility with most PSX/PS2 games.

Some of those HD TV shows sure eat up a lot of valuable HDD space easily. Just one episode of Parks & Recreation in HD format can eat up 1.4GB of HDD space.

And are there any good free 3rd-party anti-virus programs for the PS3 when casually surfing on the Net with it as well? The Micro Trend one doesn't seem to be adequate enough anyways.

Thank you for your time and help...

I doubt you'd really need virus protection for it. Also, there are no 2.5" SATA 1TB hard drives yet either. I don't think.

No reason why it wouldn't support them though unless the filesystem has a hard limit, which I doubt.

Western Digital produces a 1TB 2.5" drive, but I believe it is thicker than the standard 9.5mm and might not fit in the PS3. But I own neither a PS3 nor the drive in question so you may want to double check...

The early 1 TB drives are likely to be 12.5mm three-platter (or more) jobs so yes, that's something to check out. I'd rather get two 500GB drives; similar or possibly even better throughput (not that the PS3 is a throughput monster), probably less cost overall, and redundancy in case one buys the farm.

500GB is the biggest documented drive put in a 60GB machine.

I have a WD3200EVT something or other -

Here is a UK site selling the 500GB version.

Just look that up on a US site and your ready to go.. Just make sure you have a backup of your data before swapping them over as the PS3 requires a reformat if you take the original drive out and put it in again. You have to backup your data, swap the drives, it will format the new drive, then you restore your old data to it on the new one.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
