I've never played Ketsui, but looking at the videos, it certainly reminded me of DOJ. Looks like they were similar in art and music. Ketsui takes the DOJ bullets into Progear territory though.

Cave was seriously considering releasing Progear No Arashi as a tate oriented game but decided that a yoko one would be best. It sure would have been interesting to play Progear in true tate fashion.m3tall1ca wrote:Rob wrote:Progearkengou wrote:Ketsui's patterns are just an entirely different dimension of insanity. EXACTLY what I was going to say. Fuck. I don't know why everyone ignores this. Multi-colored bullatz?
The games play totally differently, but that's almost solely due to the multitude of SHIT THAT COMPLETELY CHANGES when you make a game like Progear.

Yeah, I've had my fair share of owning/playing a Ketsui PCB but traded it for another stellar shmup title instead. This was before Ketsui went up in value, of course. I'm still amazed at Arika's Ketsui Death Label port on the Nintendo DS...impressive Cave-flavored danmaku action on a handheld. Can't get any better than that for the time being.

Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
I've played and owned both and I think they're nothing alike. They were both released in the same year, and had an OST of both games on a single disc, so people get the impression that they're related. They aren't really related at all. Ketsui's way of handling with the player is dealt with confusion. Daioujou's more about brute force.
I think Futari is much closer to Ketsui in the way it handles scoring in all modes. Original mode has you point blanking enemies (just like getting 5's in Ketsui) and in Maniac, it has you grouping enemies (just like in Ketsui) and destroying large enemies before the red gauge drops (just like the timer in Ketsui).

just like in ketsui just like in ketsui just like in ketsui why don't u suk its dick
Anywhoser, I think Namiki took similar direction with DOJ, Ketsui, and even DFK, but he did different shit with all three. All three great soundtracks.
As for the title of the thread, sure. Whatever. In my opinion, it's more badass to loop DOJ than it is to loop Ketsui, though they're both very difficult games. On top of that, DOJ just seems like a darker, grittier, more brutal game at the end of the day. Je ne sais KWAH. My friend won't shut the fuck up and let me concentrate on this post, so I'm done with this shit.

For TonK,
To really make your mouth salivate, watching some awesome Ketsui Superplay DVDs will only sate your desire for it even more. I can burn you a couple of DVD-Rs of NIH Ketsui Insanity DVD: The 2nd Apocalypse and Arika's Ketsui Special DVD if you'd like.
When I first got ahold of Success' Reverse Babel Label DVD of Psyvariar Appreciate DVD Vol. 1 with Superplays of both Psyvariar Medium Unit and Psyvariar Revision running on the Taito G-Net motherboard setup, I knew I had to get either a Taito G-Card of Psy-Mu or Psy-R for my arcade PCB stash. Well worth it to see a master player being put through his or her paces without making a single mistake...how cool is that?

Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
other than bullet colors ketsui and DOJ have very little in common....if you look more closely at the videos, tonk, you will notice that a lot of the patterns in ketsui have a very organic flow to them and often expand and interact in very strange ways.....the only other game i can think of off hand even remotely similar in this might be progear....this is just in bullet patterns, nothing about scoring
DOJ on the other hand has, for the most part, fairly rigid patterns that expand and interact pretty rigidly....like less curvatures and stuff....
scoring has nothing in common.
ketsui is a better game....simple....DOJ is an epic game and balls to the wall hard....but ketsui is something else entirely.....just about everything about ketsui was executed perfectly.....once you 'get' ketsui, its like no other game...not that ive played anyways
i miss it....

Lol - it's true, Progear does indeed have the most organic bullet patterns of any shmup. They do totally nutty things, one of the reasons it's so brilliant to play (and still Cave's best Hori shmup.)m3tall1ca wrote:Rob wrote:Progearkengou wrote:Ketsui's patterns are just an entirely different dimension of insanity. As for the DOJ/Ketsui argument, there isn't one really. On their own merits, both are incredible games. DOJ is the sort of game that turns up at the house of the older guy in school that kicked your little bro off his bike, and lets him have it with a baseball bat, smashing the hell out of everything else along the way.
It's a force both to be reckoned with and admired equally.

Lol, you forget to mentions while DOJ is there, it rapes everyone and everything on sight too.Skykid wrote: DOJ is the sort of game that turns up at the house of the older guy in school that kicked your little bro off his bike, and lets him have it with a baseball bat, smashing the hell out of everything else along the way.
On Topic:
Ketsui > DOJ, it's worth the extra +600 Bucks!
It's the most intense game I have ever played/owned. Playing Ketsui is like fighting on a rocket trusted roller coaster against 100 Airwolfs with nonstop Ninjas popping out everywhere.
The future is 2D

I've never played Ketsui but i reckon it must be more accessable than DOJ despite the similar number of bullets flying around because of the respective scoring systems. Its not so much the mega difficulty that puts me off DOJ but the hardcore memorisation
Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
Waaay more bullets in DOJ, but that's only cos they spam you like mad from the get go. Patterns in Ketsui aren't as dense or as clumped, it's more like a really complex bullet web.Mero wrote:I've never played Ketsui but i reckon it must be more accessable than DOJ despite the similar number of bullets flying around because of the respective scoring systems. Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
Ketsui doesn't have chaining, right? That automatically makes it superior.

Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
Ketsui is for little boys; what, no chaining? That means you can make mistakes all over the place scoring-wise and can still get a WR level score. The "chaining" that Ketsui has does not count as real chaining. Plus Ketsui has that empty lock garbage that would be annoying at WR level scoring. Annoying like a bratty little kid.
DDP DOJ is for men. Real men require perfection. What, your chain broke? Go cry about it.

Being a man and a tough scoring system are, however, mutually exclusive. You're just misunderstanding what I'm saying.orange wrote:woah there guy uh chaining and depth in scoring are not mutually exclusivesikraiken wrote:Ketsui is for little boys; what, no chaining? Re: DDP DOJ is the "poor mans" Ketsui - GO!
Sure, they're nuts! But I just mean the bullet arrangements - it's a little more like swathes of bullet carpet coming at you in DOJ, meaning you need to be making larger movements to avoid them. Ketsui has figure 8ing too, but you can weave in between those little bullets a bit more.jonny5 wrote:ketsui stage 4+5 are extremely dense and hecticSkykid wrote:Waaay more bullets in DOJ, but that's only cos they spam you like mad from the get go.
