Same here. Even if you make a blatant error, autobomb to the rescue (plus they dole out bombs like they're going out of style).

Finally managed a quick and dirty All Clear in 1.5 Arcade Original with Nor Reco (217 million) 2 nights ago. I ended up turning the battle with Larsa into BOMB-BOMB-BOMB-DIE-REPEAT. Tonight I'll give Ab Parm a run. See if I can't clear up the end of stage 5 (the final bit after the tate-ana gets a might crowded).

That's pretty normal. The greater the risk the greater the reward. The tighter you squeeze for points the more likely you are to set your self up for a mistake you would not have made if you were focusing on survival. it's what makes scoring fun :)

Congrats on the second extend. I remember when I was finally able to regularly get the second extend in the first Mushi, and how good that felt.

The 1up in stage 5 is going to cause me to throw things. >=( I almost always miss it... or I accidentally bomb the building it's in. I just barely missed out on getting over 320M in Novice Original (I know, I suck) because of that.

At least I finally no-missed it. I usually have one stupid death in stage 5 towards the end because I get greedy.

Novice is simply rewarding :)

I've never 1cc'ed any Cave game in my life, but with a complete no-miss on Novice Original and Novice Maniac and a 1CC with one lost life on the last boss on Novice ultra - each on the very first try, it's just plain and simple rewarding. Just feels good, though I know I'm far from 1CC'ing Classic Original...

On Ultra I got two 1ups on the last stage (on the same spot). Is this standard or did I do anything to trigger this ?

Exclusive to Novice Ultra only. It's standard (unless if you bomb on that particular area).

Today is "playing shit on Mushi 1.5 day". Yesterday was a great day. Today is not. Must be tired.

Anyway, what's the score with inviting friends etc on XBOX live? Does this mean we can create our own real time score list for this site? If so, nice.

I don't play on-line games so forgive my ignorance.

Finally caved in and tried Arrange tonight. I don't really understand how to rank up both counters to max (just don't use the reflect much?) to be able to enter Fever mode... And when I had 'em maxed, how do I keep Fever mode from running out so fast? I'm back to reading that one post I've found in the strategy thread until things get clearer. Getting a 1CC on Arrange Original was quite easy for me though, Ultra was way harder (stage 4 boss) yet still withing reach. Maniac was quite manageable (1CC as well). I get pretty cramped in my button fingers though.

The implication that the vast majority of your points in arrange manifest themselves on the final boss makes me not want to play it :\

Argh, I just managed to bomb that place the first time I got to it on 1.5 original.. I almost beat the first four stages with no miss and messed up on the latter half of stage 5.. (never been that far before, unexpected bullet hell made me panic bomb and I got cornered by huge barrages of aimed bullets multiple times) I was wondering where that extend was, I thought it was because I had died on stage 5 or something.

True, Stage 5 is a real mess when you don't know what you're doing sometimes, like me. Can anyone tell me whether or not they can download my latest Novice Original replay? I'd looove pointers 9although I guess that is, again, probably best talked about in the strategy forum). Eh, but if it weren't for Palm DYING in Stage 5, I would've beaten my score AND gotten to the True Last Boss. :P

Anyways, I should try to move up to conquering Novice Ultra... Right now, however, I'm recovering from a bullet-induced migraine. And I might mix it up by playing Mirror's Edge to pass the time between shmup sessions.

Agh, I really have issues with Arrange. My run was a lot of, "Oh, hey, I don't know I'm doing! What is this? Oooh! SHINY!" And then I died on stage 3's boss. Good riddance in a way, I was so horribly confused. Hearing them both scream as they fall to their deaths makes me feel a little bad, too. O_o;

You're not the only one. Without destructible parts, I find boss milking quite boring.
(I keep putting credits in, though. Go figure.)

When I played Arrange mode I was a little intoxicated and that suited it nicely. I don't think I'll be playing it for score, but I'm sure it will still get plenty of play.

Methinks Novice Maniac is the closest we'll get to a console Touhou (not that I necessarily want that). After 1cc'ing all the Arrange modes and whatnot I don't see myself going back to them. It's an interesting idea, and juggling counters adds in some more strategy, but I just don't find it all that appealing. ...despite loving the Gigawings and MM.

Very nice. I'm ever so close to doing the same, but can't quite get to Larsa with enough bombs/lives to pull it off. I started off using Normal Reco too, but have switched over to Abnormal in the last few days. The extra damage he does with his focused shot makes him the absolute boss-killer, and also makes quick work of the bullet-cancelling larger enemies (makes stage 5 a lot more managable). I tend to score lower with him vs. the normal version for some reason, so I think once I get the clear I'll start playing Normal for score.

It's only annoying in Arrange Ultra, where the TLB's bomb shield can be abused and milked for points. Arrange Original and Arrange Maniac are much more balanced in that regard (although much like the Ver 1.5 modes, good performance in Stage 5 is worth a large proportion of the total score) and also require a lot of skill in dodging in order to score well.

Also, the post I made in strategy is a general outline for understanding how scoring works, not an actual all-encompasing strategy.

Playing in arrange mode for a while, then changing over to 1.5, leads to hilarious results. It takes a couple games to get my brain un-wired from "I can ram right into this pink cloud of death".

This game managed to make me finally TATE my CRT TV. Game looks great on it. I feel scrubby though that it took me 2 tries to 1cc Novice Ultra though while a vast majority of you guys managed on the first. As for 1.5, I really need to try not to play for score until I can manage to 1CC Original comfortably. Can No miss stage 1 & 2 but stage 3 rapes me. Gonna need to look at some replays.

I TATE'd almost immediately after I received my HDTV. :3

Sometimes I TATE, and sometimes I don't... But, in today's runs, I didn't flip my telly. (IN SOVIET RUSSIA, TELEVISION TATE YOU!)

Me too man. I only just got to stage 4 through liberal use of bombing. I'm gonna love every second of mastering this game :)

.........I used to do that (turn myself, mind you), back when I relied on an SDTV. It was too big to turn, anyways. :/

Isn't that called ghetto tate?

EDIT: Missed your reply
BrightSuzaku wrote: .........I used to do that (turn myself, mind you)
yeah thats ghetto tate, I tried it for the first time with Futari. Never cared before but I was curious as to how big it could be on my 50inch lcos. It was kinda interesting but I'm cool with playing it on my crt.

when I brought it over to a friends house and we played on his 73inch I found you dont need to do ghetto tate if you set your screen options right (as in you dont need to rotate your body cause the controls work as you would expect). That was actually sickening cause it was WAY too big for me. Maybe if we had some drugs it could have been a whole new experience.

I'm even more ghetto with my XBL connection. Since I don't feel like splurging on a wireless dongle at the moment, I connect my xbox to my laptop using the included cable and my laptop find the internet for my xbox! IT'S MY INTERNET SLAVE.

After messing around with a LS-32 stick, I now see why some people prefer it over it's Sanwa counterpart. Breaking it in real nice in the training mode. :D

there are a ridiculous amount of settings, no idea what to change here. i tried a few things but it made it look worse.
been meaning to follow up on this comment i made a while back. it looks like its just Arcade mode that looks like shit. 360 mode looks great.

but in this very thread ive saw one person say that arcade mode looks soft (besides myself) and one person say how great it looks when set up properly.

maybe i should just stick with 360 mode and not worry about it. can someone refresh me on what the differences are between Arcade and 360? is it just graphical? any score or slowdown differences? if not, ill just stick with the better looking 360 mode.
WarpZone wrote:I don't think it was mentioned that while setting up scanlines, etc. you can hold the left shoulder button to make the menu transparent.
thats awesome. i figured there had to be something like that in the settings.

Top 20 scores for each character (Normal and Abnormal are considered separate) require a replay, otherwise the score won't be uploaded. Scores below that range won't attach a replay.

Edit: maybe not, looking at Novice Maniac I'm not quite sure what the pattern is now. I guess I'll have to play well enough to get another replay uploaded and see what it says.
been meaning to get back to this too. maybe it wasnt clear, but what i was asking is if there is a cutoff point on how many places on the boards can upload their replays. on original 1.5 there are replays for folks in the 400's. so im wondering what the cutoff is.

im also wondering how you actually upload them (but maybe thats because i havent gotten a high enough score to be given the option to upload). all im seeing is the ability to save your replay to your hard drive after a run.

If I'm playing online is there any way to tell that it's asking me to save a replay for a high score on the leaderboards?

Not that I'll ever be that good, but if I don't KNOW that I set a high score I won't save my game ever unless it was a MASSIVELY good run.
