But....
I've held off from buying a blue elf-- just couldn't bear to spend money on anything half assed, until I saw a clip of a supergun box like this;
Box with joystick and buttons on top, supergun inside, with a blue elf tucked in there too! Awesome casual arcade console to look cool and play on my big TV in outside the arcade! Kind of like a glorified one of those sega re-release controllers with the built in games, but with cps1, 2, and neo geo stuff in it.
I clicked "buy it now" and now I can't wait to make it. Plus, I have old supergun guts that I havn't used for years.

I was looking at this too until I saw the reviews on youtube. Apparently the emulation isn't great on a lot of the titles. cps3 has a lot of frameskip and neogeo/cps2 drop close to 30fps as well. Not to mention that the sound is really garbled. Maybe it'd be better for the less hardware taxing games on there.

was I go from the reviews was that the blue elf 1 wasn't so bad, and that the blue elf 2 was quite a bit worse. Either way, I hope it isn't too bad for a casual single unit on my TV. I'll post my review here when it gets here in the mail.

Well, I finally got my blue elf in the mail.
Major ROM abuse!
It's pretty much just like CPS 1, 2, and neo geo on the PSP with 2 frameskip and on the lowest sound sample rate. Maybe with a little more lag?
Some of the shmups have really noticeable lag (progear, mars matrix), while the beat'em'ups feel pretty good. Everything is a skippy and jerky at times (some older games do run really good)-- but it never gets to the point where your just looking at the screen wondering what's happening. Flashing sprites flicker pretty bad (say, a bomb on progear). The whole think feels like a toy-- but MOST significant is the bad sound- on some games more noticeable than others, just based on what the sounds are-- the sound can get HORRIBLE. Just super fuzzy. As bad as Raiden Fighters 2 2000 or whatever the redo was called.
Optimistically, it's really no worse than playing a nintendo after you've grown up and forgotten how flickery the graphics are (it feels kind of like nintendo, too, with some wierd sprite wrap-around flickers at the very left edge of the screen on some games). Plus I got it for a good deal, and I'm still going to love it on a TV with a supergun.
Don't anyone buy this unless you want the toy version of these games. Very fun in a sort of "throw-away" kind of way.
Which brings me to a question: Has anyone had power probs with these? It works on 3 of my cabs, but not on the other 4 (nor my supergun yet). Seems that the power requirement (or the video requirements?) are VERY strict! I'll get sound sometimes but no picture, or nothing at all, or wierd button probs (still checking that). I think it needs high amps plus a high 5v, but I'm still checking. Gotta make my supergun work now.

Yeah, that would be the re-released Seibu Kaihatsu single layer PCB of Raiden Fighters Jet 2000 with it's subpar music loops and sound effects. Avoid it and get the much better SPI cartridge version of Raiden Fighters Jet instead with it's better stereo output capability and better BGM tunes.
