I'm not so sure if it's cool at all... I mean, the HD remakes of 2D games have not in any way improved the original product AFAIK. Taking into consideration the limitations of the hardware, the graphics used to be good back in the day, maybe even mindblowing, but these remakes don't have the same impact. Sharper graphics require more and more quality animation, which just isn't going to happen. Look at SF2 HD remix, it looks like CRAP. The problem is that a remake is shackled by the original product, and just redrawing the frames in HD will only result in bland and boring "flash-game" look. It's not easy for new games either, even Muramasa looks too "flash" at some points when seen in motion. Blaz Blue looks great though, no complaints there.

This Toki remix looks unnecessary. Even though it's beautiful, the sprites blend in with the background too much, and there is not enough depth in the colors.

I would, however, love seeing HD sequels for some Amiga classics. Give me HD Shadow of the Beast 4, Turrican 4, Alien Breed X, but please, leave the originals alone. The graphics and animations are good enough as they are, and the music too. Take Toki for example, the Amiga version has vastly superior music when compared to the arcade original or this Toki HD (based on what I heard in the video). Of course remixes bring old and near-forgotten classics to a wider public, but I'd rather have the future generations discover the original gems instead of these flash cartoon versions.

Bad example, since they couldn't add animation frames to that without significantly changing the game mechanics. Toki HD they can put as much animation as they like (well, can).

Nothing wrong with remakes. You can always go back to the original if you want. I can't see anyone not liking Bionic Commando Rearmed, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Metroid Zero Mission or Resident Evil.

Good point. IMO they should have done just that, change the game mechanics too when they saw that the animation looks ridiculously bad, or just scrap the project (it took them an eternity anyway). Now the result is such a disappointment that none of my sf-playing friends want to touch the game anymore.

I don't have anything fundamental against remakes. Here I was talking about HD 2D-remakes (as for 3D, there is indeed a lot of potential for remakes - Resident Evil REmake is fabulous!). Metroid Zero Mission is not HD, pixels are still showing so there is no "flash-syndrome". The same goes for Kirby, and other successful remakes like Paradroid '90.

However, Bionic Commando Rearmed is a great product, I didn't think of that because I only played the original game instead of the NES remake, on which BCR is based on, and the original and BCR are totally different games. But you're right, it is showing that a proper HD remake is possible, so maybe I should shut up =) I just got upset with this hype and thought that it's a given that any old classic can be made "better" by just replacing pixel graphics with cartoon graphics.

Some frames in SSFII show up for only 1/60 of a second?

yeah. I don't get where going with that :?

The HD remake has the same exact amount of frames as the original. I'm sure they could have shoehorned new animation frames in it, but that wasn't the point of the remake. People already know the frame advances by heart, hence:

I think you figured out where going with that quite well

I understand what you mean though. I'm sure there could be extra frames added, but they'd have to be in a similar enough pose that it'd be kinda pointless.

According to their Facebook page, they're now Official Nintendo Wii and DS publishers, whatever that means for Toki HD.

It probably means that it's going to come out as Wiiware.

Hey, curious about that too. Nobody ever super slo mo camera'd games? Perhaps some frames take 2/60
Curious about the dragonpunch which might have 1/60 frames in it.......right?
Or could this be forced in mame? to run a framerate of 1? and then it should take 1 second for a 1/60 frame. This deserves a new project thread and somebody seeking answers, pretty please!

Toki HD is confirmed as a WiiWare title. Playstation 3 is mentioned as well on their FB page, so that's next I guess.

Man, I can't see how some of you guys are complaining about the art. I think it looks great, and i'm a pretty big critic when a non-J company reworks a J game. I don't give a crap about Toki(never played it), but it looks fantastic. I'm more interested in Joe and Mac, although I haven't played it either(but i've heard good things about it).

Give Toki a shot, it's one of the better arcade platformer-shooters ever. I'd take it over any of the Contra/Ghouls n Ghosts games. I'm sure there are a lot of people whose eyes are gonna bug out at that, but they're WRONG!!!!
I like the updated graphics too, btw, and I'm pretty attached to the old ones - they were a great blend of careful, imaginative spritework and don't-give-a-fuck oddness.

Question: Does anybody know what the artists of Toki went on to do? TAD went under a few years after making it but I SWEAR I've seen a sidescrolling arcade platformer with very similar visuals to Toki. I've searched high and low on MAME but I can't find anything. I dimly recall it having a white-haired ape as an enemy.

That would most likely be Thunder Hoop, a Toki-inspired game made by the Spanish company Gaelco.

Nah, that's not it - the visuals are pretty different style-wise. The gameplay is really, really similar though - practically traced Toki's enemy behaviour. Thanks anyway.

Biomechanical Toy? I don't think the art style is too close, but it is varied.

I really ought to give my Toki board (Dragon1952's I think?) some playtime when I get my SG issues all sorted out. Classic. I probably still like both Contra arcade games more, and the GnG titles are fine as well, but I don't own any of them. The original of this was really a no-brainer, though I'll gladly pass on the Wii rerelease.

I can't stand smoothed high res fonts in 2D games. That, imo, is the final kick that gives a high res 2D game the so called "flash game look".

I'm more excited about Magical Drop V, which will also include characters and features from Ghostlop, and quite possibly serve as the closest thing the game will ever get to an "official" release.

This topic is now about Toki.

Let's talk some TOKI SPOILERS BELOW:
