Image scaling for arcade stick art

Post by Warp_Rattler »

Getting ready to remake my Tekken V HRAP-alike with some proper Sanwa glory, and the current artwork has just got to go. I'm still trying to figure out what to replace it with, but all the options I've considered have one thing in common--the art I'd like to use is just too small.

One of the ideas I've been considering is taking a screenshot from e.g. Gradius and manipulating it for an interesting layout. How would one go about enlarging an image like that with a nearest-neighbor type scaling which still keeps the blocky pixel look in, say, the GIMP? Or are there other freeware or open source programs better suited to this sort of manipulation?

If you're using GIMP:

Image -> Scale Image.

Set the Interpolation dropdown to 'None' instead of 'Cubic'.

You probably already know this, but I'll say it anyway: be sure to use integral scaling—that is, multiply the dimensions by whole numbers—to prevent distortion. You can select percentage for the units, which makes this really simple.

What's the artwork you have in mind?

honorless: Thanks! I figured it was something fairly simple. And yes, I do make sure to scale images up or down while keeping their original proportions--certainly wouldn't want to fuss with getting good-looking artwork and then making it all distorted.

emphatic: Haven't quite decided yet. I want something that looks fairly classy (no giant boobs etc.) and is definitely shooter-related. Been kicking around an Ikaruga theme of some sort, but hi-res art (or even decent art I could fudge to the proper resolution) is in short supply and generally consists of the same 10 or so images. With my question on scaling, I thought it might be fun to load up something like Graduis in MAME, get a few screenshots and then do some editing around in the GIMP to get a neat pixel art look.
What would really be nice is a big funky danmaku pattern, like Cave exhibited as art prints at one of their recent events (tried to find a link but forgot all about it and have no idea where to look).

I think I'm going to go with this guy for the print and for custom-cut plexiglass: http://www.tek-innovations.com/arthobbi ... x.cfm?loc= I don't have the skill or resources to do the cutting myself, and aside from Kinko's (which I hate) there's not much in the way of local printing, so I'd rather have the work custom made by somebody who's been doing it for a while.
