Good shopping place for gaming stuff in Hong Kong?

Post by gundamalpha »

Going to have an unplanned trip to Hong Kong for couple days during Christmas and hoping to get to see some gaming shops there. Anyone from Hong Kong or been there care to share what are some places to visit for gaming stuff? I would love to see anything from retro to current gen to arcade :D

There's an electronics shopping district there that, while it's focused on things like TVs and home computers, does have a lot of places selling games. I can't remember the name of it at all but it should be in most Hong Kong guidebooks (it was for us). I actually bought several used Saturn games there at a place specializing in Japanese used games.

I checked as thoroughly as I could to make sure they were legit, and they certainly seemed to be... but yes, beware of pirate copies in Hong Kong, as I'm sure you're aware. Most of the pirated junk I saw was in street markets and not in stores (and larger stores were generally bootleg-free), but keep your eyes open.

The electronic district you talk of is great - alas I forget the name now. :(

Not much obviously pirated stuff in Hong Kong anymore, they've done a fairly good job of stamping it out of everywhere except the dark corners.

Is that place located in Kowloon? Called Sham Sui Po or something similar? That's in my list, along with Mong Kok 188 shopping arcade :D

Will I be missing out much if I were to go these 2 only?

Definitely check out the Golden Shopping Arcade, tons of gaming stuff to be found, and you might find some treasures if you are willing to spend the time digging through the really old stuff. It is located right next to one of the Sham Shui Po MTR exits.

Mong Kok 188 sounds very familiar, I have probably even been there... I think there was another building next to it, 198 or something. But Sham Shui Po is the place to be. You can find little shops here and there in the other malls around Causeway Bay and Wan Chai, but IIRC the prices will not be as good as what you can do in SSP.

How much time will you have in HK? If you only have a short time, I wouldn't really say you would be missing out by not going to other places, because you will be in heaven if you have never visited a mall like that before.

I only have 2 1/2 days free for myself there, 1 1/2 to be spent in Kowloon, and another 1/2 Macau 1/2 Hong Kong. The other 2 days are tours.

Let me know how your trip goes. I'm going to be in Hong Kong for 10 days the first part of April and am looking for info similar to what you're looking for.

Golden Arcade and 188, These are the two best shopping areas, I go to both every year and pick up all sorts of new and retro games.
