Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I'm kinda stuck here. I've measured the DDP:DFK poster and my Ketsui poster, and they are approx 40.5 x 28.5
The premade (and cheapest) poster frames I can find are either 40x30 or 41x27. A framing job would cost about $150 per print. Basic custom frames are $60 or so. I'd really prefer not to have to fold an edge of the poster. So the guestion is if you framed them, how did you do it?

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Ever since I had got my Working Designs/Taito Raystorm poster directly from WD themselves, it was one of those odd-ball sized posters to begin with. I would've had to trim off a bit just to get it to fit into a standard poster-sized DIY framing setup. So that was out of the question. The next alternative was to get it custom framed at my local Aarons Bros. Art Mart. Luckily with a 20% off discount coupon for custom framing service, it ended up being around $178.00+ USD. It was well worth the $$$ spent to get it framed professionally. I could have gotten the really expensive UV protective glass backing but opted to go with just standard plain glass backing instead. ^_~
I still have the custom framed PSX Raystorm poster hanging on the wall for posterity...looks great with that cool Taito FX-1B powered Raystorm PCB as well. ^_~
If you check in your Sunday's advertising supplements, sometimes you can find a percentage off for customing framing services from both Michael's and Aaron's Art Mart franchises. It's better than having to pay full price anyways. ^_~

Yea, it was Michaels, and the price above was for basic framing, after the 50% off sale they're having this weekPC Engine Fan X! wrote:Ever since I had got my Working Designs/Taito Raystorm poster directly from WD themselves, it was one of those odd-ball sized posters to begin with. Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
If you are willing to pay good money for original Cave arcade posters, then it would be wise to get them professionally custom framed. Just my two cents here. ^_~
The catch-22 of custom framing service is that you can easily spend upwards of $200.00+ for just one poster with some additional expensive glass backing and/or metal framing options...consider it as a one-time intial investment if you will. ^_~

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
It's not that I disagree, it's just that I don't want to pay $400 to frame two CAVE posters that cost me so much less than that. It becomes a question of appreciation - in 10 years will I be able to recoup $300 per poster? $100 certainly, maybe even $200 for the DDP:DFK prototype.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:If you are willing to pay good money for original Cave arcade posters, then it would be wise to get them professionally custom framed. I'm sure I'll get them framed, I was just hoping someone had come up with a "better idea" that I hadn't thought of

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
No, help here, I'm afraid
Your Michael's 50% is certainly the budget route. My wife just mentioned that Joan Fabrics has a 60% off coupon good till Aug. 29 which can be used on custom framing.
I got by the sweet way by knowing a fellow that works at a high end art outfit and got me 3 arcade posters pro-framed for about $112 ea.:
DOJ and Mars Matrix:

You can see that choosing the right color really makes the image pop!
The DOJ has a dark blue frame that blends nicely with the other blues in the image.
Also think about whether you want to have the poster dry mounted or not. Dry mounting will be perminently fixed to your poster, but it will keep the image nice and flat. I did these posters each way: MM is dry mounted, DOJ is not (you can probably see a bit of waviness in the DOJ image). This was merely a choice based on what I had spent on the posters (at the time I had to shell out $150 for DOJ vs. the $12 I spent on MM
). Hindsight I kinda wish I had both of them dry mounted cause there's no way I'd ever want to break down that nice $100 frame job on either.

The AO group order should include B1 poster frames. They run about 4000 yen I hear.

Elixir dude,
You got it all wrong, undamned's State of Arizona ain't part of Earthquake country but the Golden State of California is with it's various faultlines (especially the San Andreas faultline). There hasn't been a major earthquake incident since the Bay Area Loma Prieta one back in 1989 -- I remember that one quite well. As they say, "The Big One" still hasn't happened yet and is to be expected in the next 30 years or so. ^_~
That cool Capcom CPS2 Mars Matrix arcade poster looks super sexy with matching red metalliac frame. Excellent choice in framing colors, ud. Yeah, it's nice to get a really good deal on customing frame, especially if you know someone who does custom framing professionally for a living. ^_~

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
They get groups of cabs sent freight from Japan. You can find B1 poster frames quite easily, and I doubt they'd add anything to the freight. Worth a thought. Might want to bring it up over there. You should be patient though.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I bought this 100x70 cm frame from IKEA for my Futari poster. It costs 15 Euros:

However the Futari poster is about 103x73 cm in size so I had to bend it over the edges slightly. I guess most people who buy Cave posters wouldn't be willing to do this.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Customing framing is the way to go if you spend serious $$$ for original Cave posters. And no folding or trimming the edges either. And better resale value if you want to get some $$$ back from it if you get tired of it (that is assuming if the Cave poster is left intact and in pristine condition). ^_~antares wrote:I bought this 100x70 cm frame from IKEA for my Futari poster. Bump for an old thread.
1) Anyone know of any current sales or coupons for custom framing?
2) Thoughts on what color I should use for the frame on the DFK poster? Just black...?

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Looking around, I did find this place online: http://wholesaleposterframes.com/product_info2.php
They'll let you order a "frame kit," which is everything but the glass/acrylic and whatever you use for backing. It seems to be around $35 for the Japanese B1 size posters, which doesn't strike me as bad at all. You'll probably spend around that, maybe a little more, on your backing and cover, which still leaves it a hell of a lot less expensive than solutions from Michaels and local framing shops. I do like my Cave posters, but I'm not such an idiot or fanatic that I'll spend 3x or more of the value of the poster itself on framing. Kinda makes me wonder if those professional framers use large amounts of gold in the construction, as my uneducated mind cannot possibly comprehend how they can charge as much as they do for a simple frame.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I'm only going to do one or two and I own the posters for practically nothing so I figure I can afford to do them right. Hopefully I'll make a run at it this week.
Edit: Just cut a 60% off custom framing coupon from today's paper.
Michaels do as good a job as an independent shop you think?

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I suppose they would do a decent job, but they're still freaking expensive. I found a coupon for custom framing a while back--40% or 50%, can't remember--and went there for a price check, and I think it was still over $150 for just a simple black metal frame and acrylic panel. For that kind of scratch you'd expect them to do a good job, but then again, I'm not sure how many ways one can possibly sandwich a poster between a sturdy backing and a transparent sheet inside a frame.
One thing I've considered and which might be an option is a technique where the poster is bonded to a thicker sort of board, then covered in a clear-drying layer of some sort of acrylic substance. It's permanently fused like that, so it's not like you can remove the poster and roll it back up if you intend to re-sell it, but it's a lot more durable and looks amazing, as it turns your poster into a more permanent art piece. Not sure about U/V blocking and whatnot, but just hang it in your lightless man-cave and it'll be fine. I don't know if Michaels etc. offer this service, but it's something your local frame shop might do. I think there are even some places in larger metropolitan areas or online who do this technique as well; I'd try and point you to some of the links if I could remember what the heck it's called.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I'd check to see if there's a standard frame size larger than you need that you think looks nice and have them put it in that with mat board, it should be a fair bit cheaper.

When I was in the processing of getting my Working Designs/Taito Raystorm poster framed by Aaron Brothers Art Mart, the framing lady asked me if I wanted just regular glass backing or the more expensive UV protective glass backing. I went with just the regular glass backing option. UV glass backing is a nice option to have but is pricey indeed.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
I've done a fair amount of looking around locally (not that that's saying much) and it seems that in general the largest poster-sized frame you're likely to find is the standard U.S. poster size of 24"x36". Online shops seem to go as high as 30"x40", and people in larger areas with more local framing shops might be able to find pre-assembled ones of a larger size, but in general anything larger falls under a 'custom' frame.t0yrobo wrote:I'd check to see if there's a standard frame size larger than you need that you think looks nice and have them put it in that with mat board, it should be a fair bit cheaper.
Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Do you know what the difference was? I will have the poster in a room with florescent lighting so it might fade over time if I don't.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:When I was in the processing of getting my Working Designs/Taito Raystorm poster framed by Aaron Brothers Art Mart, the framing lady asked me if I wanted just regular glass backing or the more expensive UV protective glass backing. For brentsg,
IIRC, it was an extra $35 or so compared to standard glass backing option. Yes, that's right with flourescent lighting, your precious posters will fade over time if not endowed with UV glass backing. Smart move on your part if you do decide to go with this option.

That Ikea option is actually a pretty good option if you don't mind trimming about an inch off of two sides. The frames are only $19.99 in the US, which is amazing. For a $20 framing job all said and done, I think I can spare an inch.

Re: Has anyone framed their CAVE posters?
Case in point, I just framed my DS and DS2 posters with the Ikea "Reslig" frame. Had to trim a little bit off the edges, but they look gorgeous, and for $19.99 per frame, I paid about 1/5 of what it costs to get a custom frame. They're just CAVE matsuri versions anyway, not expensive AC posters.
