I've played it at GameWorks tonight!
I found an ABC 2 player linked system at GameWorks tonight. The price is an insane 35 Credits ($1.94 on a $25 card, or 97 cents in Happy Hour). But I can not really say it isn't worth it.
The chair does tilt sideways, back, and forward. A puke button ("motion stop") is on the control panel if you need to hit it for any reason. Motion sensors will temporarily stop cabinet motion if a person or object is too close.
Climax mode is basically like ESPGaluda Kakusei, best used when large enemy squadrons are coming. You push the throttle fully forward when your Climax bar is filled, then release it when you are done using it. Some levels have canyons with guns or missile bases on the hillsides, while another one has you going inside an enemy fortress, doing a bit of Star Wars style obstacle dodging with your combat. There were some tripwire lasers here, but I didn't manage to hit any of them.
The control is better than the original After Burner. After some levels, there is a Night Striker style stage select. A complete game is 13 stages.
It's great, and I'm hoping for PS3/360 home ports (hopefully a PS3 one will support the PS2's USB Ace Combat throttle/stick controller).

Which GameWorks location is this? I was just in Vegas for New Year's and didn't see it there. I'll be bummed if I had just missed it getting installed.gameoverDude wrote:I found an ABC 2 player linked system at GameWorks tonight. It's at Easton Town Center (in Columbus, OH) and arrived most likely within the last week. I'm surprised the Vegas one didn't have it, though this could probably just be trickling in to locations.Dave_K. wrote:Which GameWorks location is this? I work for an airline and can fly for next to nothing... I'm almost cray enough to make a day long trip to check it out. I hope, HOPE that this gets a port so very bad.....
I got Outrun SP and I thought that was NEVER going to happen. Still.... I don't have my Daytona 2 or Super GT ports either.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I think it will. There will probably be the usual smattering of extra modes added (hopefully including a 2nd scenario, like Namco has done with Time Crisis 3 and Crisis Zone).Strider77 wrote:I work for an airline and can fly for next to nothing... just played this game a few days ago. It's really, really nice- great crowd gatherer when the points/chains start racking up, too : ) If anybody knows where the semi-tiny UC Davis, CA arcade is at- lots great looking asian womens and 4+ physical shooters (raiden fighters, 1945, etc etc), great place to try this game out : )

haha, battlesmurf: I just saw this shit at the game center at the Student union! You live in Davis?
I didn't play it though, played Raiden Fighters instead. Im still trying to find out who puts up those juicy scores on the cab...
And yea true that about the Asian hotties, makes me feel conflicted about having a girlfriend sometimes...

I go to UCD too! Small world...
I just tried out After Burner Climax today. The Commander cabinet is cool, but I wish they had the Super Deluxe Cabinet. I also wish that cabinet had an adjustable seat because it felt a little cramped for my 6'1" frame.
It took me around 5 - 6 credits to beat it today.
Now should I try to 1 credit this thing or study for midterms?

My 3CC score for ABC is currently about 700,000. This falls in 4th place, since the prefab top-score list has 1,000,000 for 1st.
I'll have to go for a 1CC sometime, but Time Crisis 4 is my current 1CC target (I had a 2CC on TC4 last time with a score of 4,586,970- and probably will take back 1st place soon with this being about 70K short of the current leader. My TC4 goal at the moment is 5M.).
BTW, having After Burner II's BGM in there for an alternate soundtrack is a great extra.

Sega should look at what Namco did with Crisis Zone (about 12-15 minutes to finish) - where they added an entire extra scenario to it that's unlocked after you beat the arcade mode. Going a bit further and adding two or three extra scenarios wouldn't be too tough to do.BBH wrote:It's a 10-minute game, I think they'd have to add a LOT to make a home port attractive...

Why didn't they make it 22 (or was it 23?) stages long, like the original After Burner games?? In any case, as expensive as it is to play in the arcades, a home port would definitely pay for itself pretty quickly. They could add in perfect ports of the originals, as unlockables.gameoverDude wrote:Sega should look at what Namco did with Crisis Zone (about 12-15 minutes to finish) - where they added an entire extra scenario to it that's unlocked after you beat the arcade mode. I just REALLY want this game (and Virtua Cop 3) to get a home port. And no TGS news on either of these titles stinks.

I can confirm at least one of these is likely to appear in 2008Strider77 wrote:I work for an airline and can fly for next to nothing... I'm almost cray enough to make a day long trip to check it out. I hope, HOPE that this gets a port so very bad.....

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Out Run 2 is about 5-6 minutes to clear, but Sega did manage an adequate amount of extras for it. All the other games (After Burner I, II, G-Loc, and Strike Fighter) should be added.dave4shmups wrote:Why didn't they make it 22 (or was it 23?) stages long, like the original After Burner games?? Two of the stages in AB II are really just the landing scenes. Stage 5 just consists of an automatic landing scene. After Burner II does seem a tad longer than ABC overall. Extra scenarios should probably have more stages- I'd have two extra ones each with 25 stages and 4 branch points, and an unlockable 50 Stage Challenge.
Sega could add a view change feature to allow you to play it 1st person, like Strike Fighter (the excellent arcade game that After Burner III on Sega CD is a halfass port of). I wouldn't mind being able to use the free-rolling SF plane in ABC- in SF your plane won't auto-center when you release the stick, so you can fly upside down or sideways at will.
Now we need Galaxy Force III.

I'd be happy with a bare bones port.... there is nothing wrong with a game you can sit down and beat in one sitting. We might not be able to talk about ABC in the shooter section of this forum, but ABC is a shooter (granted from behind perspective).
Shooters don't take long at all to beat, that's a given. Todays gamers are to use to really long story driven games like god of war, resident evil ect. I love those games to but I also have zero problem beating a game in 30 min or less either. Those kind of games are more dependent on instant gratification. Choose you method of destruction, look at all the eye candy and hop right into the gameplay. You play these games for the GAMEPLAY more than anything else.
Outrun 2 is like a 7 minute game but when I play I do it more than just one run and it's one of my favorite racers.
I'd love extra content in a home port but I'd be relieved for just a PORT at all.

Agreed; even without any extras, I still think that just the arcade game itself would do it for most people.Strider77 wrote:I'd be happy with a bare bones port.... there is nothing wrong with a game you can sit down and beat in one sitting. Damn. Great news. Time to track down a flightstick & throttle controller. I wonder how big the download will be. Hopefully it also gets a disc release later as part of a compilation.Thunder Force wrote:Over 3 years after my (way too confident, in retrospect) statement, today GamerBytes is reporting a rumor that it's finally being ported to PSN and/or XBLA!Thunder Force wrote:It's almost certain that Climax will eventually make its way to a home console in some form, but we have to be patient to discover whether that will be 360 or PS3 - or both.
