Fun with mediocrity and slow bullets - Powergate PCE

Post by Cthulhu »

Shmups are sometimes chided for having bullets that fly at unrealistically slow speeds. While none of us generally care about this (a shmup where you couldn't dodge anything would be patently un-fun), Powergate made me laugh out loud for a few minutes when I started playing it. Bullets in this game move slooooowly. Your ship? It's a little slow too. The background? Also lacking in the speed department. It's like a shmup on valium.

Despite the fact that this game is laughably easy and has terribly generic levels, a cruddy powerup system, and brain-dead bosses, I had quite a bit of fun playing through it. It was an easy 1CC, and I didn't have to dedicate umpteen frustrating hours of practice *evil glare at Giga Wing Generations* to perfecting each and every part of every level. Sometimes it's fun to boot up a mediocre game and just blast away - no memorization or superplays required.

Your description sorta reminds me of Deep Blue...a shmup I have for TG16. Is it anything like that?

Are you referring to Curtainfire Shmups? If so, those are actually one of my faves to be able to weave/dodge between masses of fire.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Deep Blue. *shudder* It's baaaaaaad...and not in the good way.

Yeah, mediocrity can be fun in it's own way, but rarely satisfies for long.

So I checked into Powergate today. I will withold all comments save one: Any game where more than 50% of your enemies come from behind shows unbelievably poor design. That is all. Thank you.
