Awesome PS1 shmups?

Post by CptRansom »

In the process of helping my sister move yesterday, I uncovered a PSone that she'd barely used. She gave it to me as thanks for helping, and now I'm asking for a list of decent shmups for the system (it's a US system, so I don't know how import games work for it... I have very little experience with Playstations in general). :D
<trap15> I only pick high quality games
<trap15> I'm just pulling shit out of my ass tbh

Before I got my JPS2 I just used a boot disc and most (though not all) of my import shmups played well on my US PS1 - it's not as much of a hassle as it is with some other systems, just look around a bit (others have different suggestions, I'm sure). Off the cuff my top personal PS1 import picks would be Raiden DX and Harmful Park, as well as Gradius Gaiden and DoDonPachi if you don't already have them for other systems (and possibly even if you do).

I'm fairly easy to please, but I watched a superplay of Harmful Park the other day and was underwhelmed. Is it really pretty fun? I know a video doesn't convey everything.

Yep, the USA Working Designs release of PSX RayCrisis still includes the mini LCD game of Pocket Ray assuming that you have a PocketStation handheld lying around. It does save high scores and your intials as well. Powered by a single CR-2032 button cell type of battery...it really didn't have too much of lifespan -- perhaps two to three weeks tops if used daily. The Pocket Ray mini game also takes up 14 blocks of memory space on the PocketStation leaving a single block of memory for the PSX RayCrisis game to utilize for it's own benefit.

SCEA was planning to release the PocketStation stateside back in 2000-2001 but decided that it wasn't meant to be.

Ah, too bad you can't import, since there are a couple real winners that are J only.

Anyway, Einhander, R-Type Delta, and G Darius, by far are the best ones on there. Really great shooters. Einhander actually still looks kinda good, despite being a polygonal PS1 game.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with the PS1 versions of RayStorm and In The Hunt.

Yes. It is great in the way that Star Parodier is great. Not difficult games, but super fun graphics and gameplay.

Gespenst> Most of the games you're listing didn't have a US release.
If you go in the direction of japanese games (buy a swap) there's also the Parodius serie (especially the sexy parodius) and Harmful Park which are very good in a more kawaii style.

Thunder Force V is better on Saturn, I've never liked einhänder but yeah, SoukyuGurentai is one of the best with DoDonpachi.
Don't you think so, Zach?

Besides the ones already mentioned, Taito Legends 2 (Metal Black, Darius Gaiden, Gekirindan) and Nightraid.

EDIT: Taito Legends 2 is for PS2.

Just picked a copy of this up last night and I happen to have a PocketStation laying around. What do I need to do to make the transfer?

Thunder Force V
RayStorm
RayCrisis
Gradius Gaiden if you have a modded or Japanese PS2, or don't mind using the ol' PS1 swap trick, preferably the latter since one of the stages slows down like nobody's business.

For 98PaceCar,

You just gotta make sure that there are 15 blocks of free space on the Pocketstation: 14 blocks set aside for the Pocket Ray game and 1 block for the Ray Crisis game save. You'll have to go to the menu prompts to d/l the necessary files of the mini game -- be sure to insert the PocketStation into Slot 1 of the PSX or PSOne console and not Slot 2 (the CPU won't recognize the PocketStation if it's Slot 2 anyways). Once d/l'ed, remove the PocketStation and press up or left or right until you see the Pocket Ray game. Press the action button to start it up. Enjoy. Note: You can't mix 'n' match JPN or USA PocketStation game files of Pocket Ray as it won't work. It has to either be all JPN or USA memory save files for either region to work properly.

Hope this info helps you out, 98Pace Car...

Geki-Oh Shooting King, this game has several different visual graphical options, gameplay is smooth, I bought it on a whim about 8 years ago, and I've been playing it ever since, even with having all of the new stuff

Whenever the question of playing PS1 imports on a domestic system comes up, how come nobody ever mentions the basic disc-swap method? Y'know: loading the TOC from an official release, then whacking the JPN game disc in at the PS1 screen? I thought variations of that worked on all revisions of the hardware (apart from the PSOne, which makes it a bit pointless in this case, but still).

I know it's tricky to get the timing down to begin with, but once you do it's totally hassle-free.

I don't think anyone's mentioned the Gradius and Salamander Deluxe Packs. Both are Japan-only releases.
