Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
THIS IS BY FAR THE SICKEST MOST INTENSE REPLAY IVE SEEN TO DATE! HOW THE HECK THIS GUY DODGES THE SLOW AND HIGHSPEED BULLETS IS AMAZING! (ARCADE LONGPLAY ON YOUTUBE 2 LOOPS 37MINS LONG)

Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
Uses a re-recording emulator + savestates
Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
What exactly does this re-recording emulator & savestate do, does it slow the game down during play or something? Ps, thanks for the youtube link ARC.zakk wrote:Uses a re-recording emulator + savestates

Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
I'm not sure how it works, but I guess the guy abuses savestates until he does each part perfectly, record it, then move on to the next part and repeats the process until he beats the entire game flawlessly.
Either way, it's fake.

Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
I guess you've gotta give this guy some credit for physically playing the game even if hes using a cheating techinque. Ive never gone beyond stage 2-5 on this game.

Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
No, everyone could do it. Just takes some time, no skills involved.I guess you've gotta give this guy some credit for physically playing the game even if hes using a cheating techinque.
Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
Err...what's the deal with this game? It's like a crappier version of Strikers 1945 II. They didn't even bother to change the stage layouts, enemy placements and bosses.

He's not playing the game in any meaningful sense. If you're not familiar with save states, think of them as "rewinds." Whenever he died, he rewinded the game a few seconds and tried again. He probably rewinded hundreds of times.Mills wrote:I guess you've gotta give this guy some credit for physically playing the game

Runs like this are called Tool Assisted Speedruns [Usually. However, he's not going for speed here, as this is a shmup! You can't control the scroll rate!].
They're essentially a flawlessly perfect run of the game if done right. Depending on the type of game, making these takes a bit of skill [this usually only applies to when the speedrun part applies], and a metric assload of time.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Indeed. Some of the movies at tasvideos.org took in excess of a year to complete.
There are some shmup runs on that site; basically play-arounds. Dancing around bullets, 30 Hz rapid fire, that kind of stuff.

Wow, just checked out that site.

This is great; I understand why you would do a TAS for a shmup if you're going to do awesome stuff like this, but the one in the original post seems kind of pointless.

The thing I find interesting is that all the people I've seen that either a) don't like TAS's in general, or b) don't like shmups in general, or possibly both, all cum all over the Gradius TAS where the guy spells messages with his ship and other shit like that. Whereas the small group of people I've talked to that don't fit into the above (including myself) all can't stand that one.
I don't know if someone ever edited it, but the short blurb for that TAS was the funniest too. It was like, "this shows how with some creativity you can create a work of art out of an very bland and boring type of game." I bet if moozooh saw that, he would change it or ask someone to, lol.
The shmup TAS's all used to be kinda eh at best because you couldn't do arcade TAS's (officially). I haven't kept up with the site in almost a year, so I don't know if anyone has done any arcade shmups yet, but Armed Police Batrider would be a great choice. There's all this funky crap you can't do in most games, like change your bullet color to the music. And just due to the game itself there would be a ton of variety.
Actually I remember some guy at (the somewhat poorly named) speedruns.net did a Giga Wing TAS, and it was just terrible. As in, if someone had actually played that, I still wouldn't have been impressed. No sense of artistry either, but I've never seen a shmup TAS yet that had any.
That guy was only doing a normal longplay, only like most people he doesn't have the talent to actually make a longplay of a shmup legitimately, so he uses the rerecording to make it possible. So although he also uses tools, the goal of his effort is different from someone making a modern "publishable" TAS.
I personally don't see the point in Let's Play's and longplays and video walkthroughs and other stuff like that, but they're actually much more popular to the average gamer than speedruns or high score plays. You can guess why. For a new release, lazy people want to watch them in lieu of actually buying and playing the game, and for old games, lazy people want to watch them instead of replaying them for easy feeling of nostalgia. There are a lot of lazy people out there.
A little off-topic too, but I never understood why the S in TAS ended up (officially?) standing for speedrun instead of superplay. You're just limiting yourself when you go with the former rather than the latter. Superplay is a better description too, and is also an established term. The banner at the top used to actually say Tool-Assisted Superplays, but none of the members followed that. Then some newb would occasionally point out that "the banner says superplay" and people would go huh?

The Strikers Plus longplay we're talking about, uses tools, but isn't really a TAS in its popular form. So don't confuse the two.linko9 wrote:This is great; I understand why you would do a TAS for a shmup if you're going to do awesome stuff like this, but the one in the original post seems kind of pointless.

I'd say it takes more skill to make autoscrolling/waiting sections look aesthetically pleasing than it does to make relevant sections technically solid. This is where many people fail.null1024 wrote:Depending on the type of game, making these takes a bit of skill [this usually only applies to when the speedrun part applies], and a metric assload of time.

Just goes to show you how hard the rank in Strikers actually is.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Whatever you want to call them, the existence of videos like this is a little sad. It's like taking a recording of a Lakers game and painstakingly editing your face over Kobe Bryant's.

I dunno what the big deal is. The video title says it all. Longplay always means tool assisted. That's the point of longplays, to showcase a videogame uninterrupted.

The TAS' i like are the ones which are obviously a TAS and makes you think weather it is or not, like this one. But personally I dont get why ppl make TAS' like the boreing Gradius one. Playing the game at 5 or 10% of its proper speed must be like watch paint dry.
If the guy who posted the gradius vid was the same guy who made it then no wonder he thought of gradius as a boreing game

Re: Strikers 1945 Plus Superplay on Youtube. REAL OR FAKE?
I dunno about laziness, I just like having a little gaming diversion when I shouldn't actually be playing anything... watching someone plow through an old game I could never conquer is always nice, too. I can't stand all the yammering in most of the 'Let's Play's', though. Just shut up and play the damn game FFS.Enhasa wrote: I personally don't see the point in Let's Play's and longplays and video walkthroughs and other stuff like that, but they're actually much more popular to the average gamer than speedruns or high score plays.
