When (some of) you guys draw...

Post by SFKhoa »

..do you guys concentrate real hard without any outside distractions aroun you, or do you have to have some music playing to get you into the mood of drawing?

I myself definitely need to have some music going on to suit what I'm drawing, but that's just me.

Yeah, I definately have some music playing. Gives my ears something to do when I'm drawing for stupidly long periods.

I normally have music playing in the background as well while I draw.

I like to listen to music when I'm painting, drawing or designing. I think it helps me keep my focus, and I'm so used to having background noise when I'm working that I can't do any artwork if I don't have the speakers going.

Funnily enough, I think the kind of music influences the kind of work I output. If I'm listening to euphoric or psytrance, my work takes on a psychedelic, energetic style, while I produce subdued artwork if I'm listening to chillout.

Depends on the mood I'm in...sometimes I'll feel like classical, other times like old rock, sometimes like nothing at all.

I can't draw squat, but I can write. And I like to use music to get inspired.

I basically just doodle for the most part. I rarely, if ever, listen to music much besides the radio while in the car though.

I've taken a few drawing/painting/printmaking classes throughout my school years, and no music while working in those classes. When I draw at home, I would have music going.

Music is good... but not any music.

Yesterday I was trying to ink an old drawing and something was making me depressed, I didn't know what... then I realized the comp was playing Stairway to Heaven! Then I turned to something lighter (INXS, I think). My mood got better instantly and I could ink the pic.

When I draw, it means I'm bored to death in a class. So class distraction for me when drawing.

I draw fairly detailed drawings sometimes, but I generally produce them fairly quickly regardless... I draw pretty much exclusively with pens, without much shading at all. Therefore, what's going on in the background isn't too important.

When I'm doing graphics on the computer, though, I tend to listen to music, as I'm usually sitting there for 3-4 hours at a stretch. It's funny, I'm super anal when I'm working on the computer, but my hand drawing style is really rough (the detail all comes from the line work).

Back when I used to be doing lots of drawings and illustrations that needed much time to be executed well I used to have music playing in the background all the time.

My concentration seemed to slip quickly when total silence was around me. Funnily enough, I didn't actually listen to the music, I rather used it to measure time. I roughly know the length of every CD in my collection, so I always was able to tell how much time had passed since I had to go to the player to start a new one. I actually couldn't remember hearing any of it afterwards, I just noticed the sudden silence.

Anyone else experienced a similar level of getting lost in your work when drawing/painting?

I can't stand to have music playing while I'm drawing or writing. I start listening to it and get all distracted, no matter how ambient or quiet. I've had a hard time with art classes because of this since students always want to bring their bullshit in to play. Yeah, can we please have some more of your best friend's punk band blaring while I work on my semester-long project?
