Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-uGJJiz-Ok Looks really nice! Does the PS3 have any kind of smooth texture function for PS1 games, like the PS2 does, or has the original GT just aged really well? Or both?

Aged well and there is a smoothing filter, but it makes things blurry.

Why not just play GT 4? You'll get the same experience, just with better graphics.

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
Because that one looks a lot more accessible to me. IV has much better graphics then Forza, but Forza (the first one) is more accessible. The menu in GT 4 looks like a messy board game, and I really have no desire to take tests, driving or whatever else, in a video game. Forza is much more streamlined; speaking of lines, in GT 4, for example, you can only use the driving line in one part of the game. In Forza, you can use it for the entire career mode or arcade mode. The n00b wrote:Why not just play GT 4? You'll get the same experience, just with better graphics.
Sorry for the rant, but the earlier Gran Turismo games just look a lot simpler.

At this point I'm wondering why you are looking for a Gran Turismo game at all. There's no shortage of modern racing games available that are simpler.dave4shmups wrote:Because that one looks a lot more accessible to me. GT1-3 have driving tests as well. The video you posted is of GT1`s Arcade mode. The real meat of the game is Gran Turismo mode and for the most part it`s not any less complex than in the other GT games. The menu in GT 4 looks like a messy board game, and I really have no desire to take tests, driving or whatever else, in a video game.

stick to Forza
Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
Actually Dave if you really want a good driving/racing sim for a playstation console, you should get Enthusia. It's an absolute crime that game was failure while the GT series does just fine phoning it in.

Still playing too many other great ps2 ARCADE driving games. The n00b wrote:Actually Dave if you really want a good driving/racing sim for a playstation console, you should get Enthusia. But the thing is, in GT IV, if you accidentally go off the track even just a little bit, you're disqualified from the race. I forget whether that happens just in one certain mode or difficulty setting, though.Jonathan Ingram wrote:GT1-3 have driving tests as well. The video you posted is of GT1`s Arcade mode. Indeed, disqualification for driving on the grass only happens on the license tests. In the rest of the game, you can off-road all you want.

Ahh, ok. Well then, I may have to pick up 4. AFIK, there is only one part of the game where you can use the driving line. I've seen a driving line in footage of GT 5 Prologue, and in GT 5, but I don't know how many races you can use it in. Driving games are like crack for me lately! I watched a review of Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli for the PS3, and it looks sweet!crithit5000 wrote:Indeed, disqualification for driving on the grass only happens on the license tests. For fun blends of arcade and simulation driving, try PGR4 and GRID...dave4shmups wrote:Driving games are like crack for me lately!

Any opinions on the Initial D series of racers??

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
I have no opinion on the PS3 Initial D (based off IDv4 arcade?) but all the NAOMI 2 Initial D arcade stage games (1-3) were well made, fun games. My personal favourite of the three would be V2 but they all have a certain charm if you can find a cab that accepts cards.dave4shmups wrote:Any opinions on the Initial D series of racers??
PS1 game was good for a little bit, at least I enjoyed the time in it. By no means an excellent game but I played this when video games (for me) were at a premium, meaning I had little selection. So it wasn't too bad. Never tried the Saturn game/version.
PS2 (Special Stage) I believe was released after Arcade Stage 2 (V2) and before Stage 3 (V3), so based off V2 to an extent. I never liked this game, not with using a DualShock2 anyway. I never got a chance to try it with a wheel but I suspect it would ultimately be a lot better. This, compared to V2, was watered down most notably in the audio department. My good friend really enjoys/ed this game whereas I never had the patience for it.
PSP (Street Stage) I haven't had much experience/exposure to at all, but when I did try it it seemed pretty good. Of course, no option for a wheel here but perhaps it isn't as necessary as might be the case with Special Stage.
My advice: the arcade games (pardon 4) or bust.
Topic: GT3 and GT2 are better than GT. GT4 also, but GT4 I never found as fun as GT3, despite having Nurburgring. My order would be GT3>GT4>>GT2>>GT.

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
I bought Special Stage after enjoying a few games of Arcade Stage V3 and while it's clearly the same engine as the Arcade Stage games, it's not quite the same experience. For one, there's no multiplayer mode whatsoever in the PS2 game. I also think I would have derived more enjoyment from the game if I gave 2 shits about the storyline and the manga or anime series. I do dig the eurobeat soundtrack though

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
Extreme Stage is awesome, but like the ps2, the handling is a bit weird, the ps2 version being the weirdest.
Extreme Stage plays surprisingly well with a wheel.
They're both classics, yet I prefer the Battle Gear series. Battle Gear 2 does unfortunalty not run with a wheel (when playing on a ps3)

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
What types/brands of wheels can you use with the PS3? Which do you all think is the best, comfort and value being considered?

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
I use the PS2 USB-powered Logitech Driving Force force-feedback steering wheel with gas & brake pedal setup on my PS3. Works like a charm with both Gran Turismo HD and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue games. Plus backwards compatilbility with a PC (with proper drivers, of course) is another cool bonus -- no need to buy two seperate driving wheels for PS2/PS3 and PC platforms anyways (when just one wheel & gas + brake pedal setup is all you need). ^_~

Re: Gran Turismo 1 on the PS3...
I got this one for like 75 euros
http://www.thegamergene.com/peripherals ... s3-review/
But, battle Gear 2 does not work, Ferrari F355 has a huge deadpoint. meaning you will have to rotate the wheel 20 degrees left or right before any steering happens.
GTI club handling is ridiculous, you will have to rotate the wheel all the way to the left or to the right.
But perhaps this is due to software, hardware and perhaps has nothing to do with this wheel.
And some other games do not work 100% ideal.
yet BG3 works awesome, I play that all the time.
I got this one because of the shifter on the right (it also has paddles, btw)
