Most of the games worth importing on the PS3 are text-heavy Japanese games. Because of that, most people don't actually import them, even though they could. Most of those games also fall into genres that are more popular than shmups, and would therefore sell better, and are therefore more likely to get licensed/localized anyway. The DSlite might be Nintendo's last region-free handheld, since DSi/DSi-enabled games are region-locked. So this pretty much leaves the PSP as the only real exception (for now?).

I too wish that region-locking would go away, but from a business standpoint, I understand why it exists. Perhaps it's one of the reasons shmup devs prefer to release their games on the 360 over the other consoles. At least with the 360, they have the option to set the region to whatever they wish. If the Mushi Futari port ends up selling more than what a licensing deal might bring in, we might start seeing more region-free shmups on the 360 (not just Cave's) in the future, assuming no company licenses them first.

an XM29 is a CRT....its essentially the same as a quad sync arcade monitor.....and its not a low res mode really....480i/480p by definition is not low res....arcade mode looks like shit, CRT or LCD screens....people who say it doesnt look that bad arent very picky or they are playing on an absurdly small screen....

your analogy sucked too by the way....

and also....i was saying it sucked in comparison to the original low-res image from the PCB....

So was it ever confirmed by Cave themselves that it's going to be region free, or are we still going by that one Kotaku interview? I'm just picturing thirty unsealed copies of this in the sales forum in three weeks time (mine included :))

AFAIK that interview was confirmation, at least NCSX has taken it as such. I don't think they'd list the item as region free unless they had confidence in it, otherwise they'd be facing a lot of expensive returns.

Black Label mode for one, really doubt anything else significant will come out for it. If it's like the 1200 point price that DS MBL was, it's not much of an expense considering the cost of importing any new game, especially if you got the LE.

I am still not sure how to set up a J-XBL account.
And I am also not sure if you can still get DLC with a silver account, since i have always had a US gold account.

See here, and yes, you can get the dlc with a japanese silver account, just not with your US one.

Yeah me too. It's gotten to the point where mute the in-game music, and put on a playlist of futari's soundtrack, all organized in a stage>boss>score tallying up>next stage music to match up with the game.

No, you won't be disappointed at all. Have you ever watched any videos of it? Many of the patterns appear to top the original Mushi's in craziness ;)

ive played it too....beat all of khoa's scores

its fun....original is way better than in mushi....maniac is pretty awesome, although the scoring can be annoying(minor mis-time and blow 30-40mill :x )....ultra is....ummm....daunting....think mushi ultra but faster and without nearly as much slowdown and more bullets....

Do you guys think I'd still enjoy the game alright if I played it on a non-hd, like 28" tube TV, or tated on a smaller one? Tate is available, right? I guess you could keep in mind I already play regular mushi on a tate'd 21" tube TV.

"360" mode won't be as impressive visually, but otherwise you should be fine, if Deathsmiles is any indication. I think it's a pretty safe bet that tate mode will be included in this (if it isn't, the fans will burn Cave's offices to the ground).

The only thing that makes me kinda pause is that I didn't like the original that much. It was OK, but it kinda left me wanting.

I've watched superplays of the new one, and it certainly looks more high octane, and prettier, and has a much more satisfying last level. Music is good too. Looking forward to it. Just trying to keep my expectations in check.

I didn't follow the thread, so my apologies if it's been posted numerous times before:

Will there be an instant DLC extension for Futari (as there was for Death Smiles) ? If yes, has the price been announced yet ? Just want to make sure to have enough points left when the game arrives.

I don't think there's a great gulf of difference between this and the original Mushi. It's the scoring that really sets it apart.
Whereas the original has a wasted, incomprehensible scoring system in everything except original (which I love for its simplicity) scoring in Futari is easy by comparison. It has shades of Espgaluda shot switching in original mode and Progear-ish points cashing in in Maniac.

BUT, this game can be extremely frustrating. It took me a lot longer to warm to it when tackling original for score, especially as you'll be full of hatred for the wall of difficulty in stage 3 (it makes or breaks runs for me.)
The original Mushi was quite diverse too, with stages 3 and 4 being exceptionally cool, whereas Futari is more about patterns than locations - they're all quite samey in theme bar the last stage (which is a blast) and the soundtrack on the whole isn't quite as accomplished (the last couple of stages are the best of the bunch.)

What I'm getting at is Futari doesn't always click with people straight away. It is much tougher all round and takes a lot more perseverance to get a clear.

Ultra is a write off to most too. It's just ridiculously hard and may as well not exist.

Word on the street is it got 8/8/7/6 from Famitsu 360, not to be confused with Famitsu. It's a sister mag.
The 7 and 6s complained of difficulty. So, we should all be used to that.

To compare, the same magazine gave Death Smiles 8/9/7/8.
They also gave Raiden IV 7/7/7/7

And to compare some more, regular Famitsu gave DS 7/7/7/8.

Just so ya know, if ya care.

Also, when does the next issue of Famitsu come out?

Well, i'm just hoping I like it more than the first one, which I wasn't all that nuts about. I completely expect to like it less than Death Smiles MBL, and I THINK i'll like ESP Galuda II the most. I guess i'll just have to wait and see. Mushi just doesn't have any 'twists". It's straight up Cave. I like DS and Galuda II for having their own things going.

Ok, let's call it near-instant, but announced before the retail release ;) Better ?
