PSP shmups: Everyday Shooter or Super Stardust Portable?

Post by cj iwakura »

I notice there's two shmups on the PSN for PSP. I'm leaning towards Everyday Shooter.

Any special preferences? Breakdowns on what kind of games to expect would be helpful, too.

My friend and I played Everyday Shooter for a while, and I found it to be obnoxious. I really, really do not like it. Especially the music. I understand the idea of music being generated by the action on-screen, but it really doesn't work for me in this game, and I think electric guitar as the only instrument just makes it this muddy nightmarish mess of sound.

To me it was another arena shooter with low, low production values masquerading as "art" (as opposed to being brilliant but underfunded.)

But you may enjoy it. ;)

I just haven't been able to bring myself to bite on Everyday Shooter despite it only being $10 on Steam. A demo might help and would normally help sell me on any stg that can shut the fuck up about it's artistic intent, but when the description on Steam talks about "exploring the expressive power of abstract shooters" and "celebrat[ing] the flowing beauty of geometry", my bullshit senses start tingling and I get that same "stay away" vibe I get from Braid, despite the overwhelming critical circlejerk that game got. The general impression I get with titles in this vein is one of taking a few lesser-used genre conventions, slapping them together with some manner of pretentious artistic sensibility, and pretending like you're some kind of goddamned indie messiah come to redeem the genre with your heavy-handed take on what was most likely done in a more interesting manner 5+ years before.

Hey, I could be wrong, but then again it's not too often that the hype or ad copy for a game will give me any sort of overwhelming feeling beyond "this could be cool" or "this will probably suck."

fwiw I have both the PSP and PS3 versions of these games, and on both systems by far prefer Stardust in all aspects (gameplay, music & graphics), even moreso including Stardust's expansion pack.

The thing about the base Super Stardust game (ps3 version) is that it's far too long - one of those games like Lumines that takes so long to get to the interesting parts, that by the time you get there you're worn out and almost wishing you would die. Some of the expansion pack modes were better, just cause they packed what was good about the game into more realisticly sized, intense chunks. I prefer Everyday Shooter, because the levels are the right size (the size of a song) - it's a fine game, but I don't think I'd classify either as a must play. I haven't yet tried them on psp, but hear Everyday Shooter is essentially identical, and Super Stardust is slightly tweaked, but basically feels the same (though I think the HD visuals were a big part of its original appeal, so losing that aspect, probably not so great).

Youtube videos would give one a pretty good idea of what to expect from either game...

I can only speak for the PS3 versions but I agree with jefflev. Stardust is too tedius, with long and easy/boring levels at the beginning/middle. It got a bunch of different game modes though, but my inly interrest in those are the trophies in the PS3 version. Oh, and it must be tricky playing without two analog sticks.

Everyday Shooter on the other hand have 8 levels with different scoring mechanics, where some are scorefests and some are not, some are pulsating and organic and one looks like you've been dropped straight into an RTS.
You can unlock and play any level whener you want, and you can unlock additional graphic effects. You can only fire in 8 directions so I prefer playing with the buttons instead of the second stick. The only bad thing about this game would be if you don't like (electric)guitar, or that you sort of wished the funniest levels could go on forever.

I'm not a picky shmupper, but I'll pass on both of these. Arena shmups aren't really my thing, so that's not good. Everyday Shooter looks like it would get old....fast. I'd rather play Galaga all day long. I lol'd at Super Stardust Portable - looks like a sperm flying around shooting a completely spazzed-out version of the toothpaste laser.

came to post this too.

Everyday shooter is decent, but it gets a bit old quick and is much better suited to the twin sticks of the PS3.

Stardust portable though works quite well and has the great Impact mode which is ideal for short frantic handheld gaming sessions.

Stardust all the way :D

Does stardust have a (non-linear) scoring system at all?

Everyday Shooter on PS3 is terrific. Excellent music, gameplay, and graphics. I doubt that it will control well on the PSP, however, so I would hesitate to recommend the PSP version.

I found Stardust a bit tired compared to the fresh ideas of Everyday Shooter.

Yes - it's a pretty good risk/reward system through the use of boost; the best players are skilled in boosting through multiple points pickups (and not using bombs?).

Are they going to do a physical copy of Stardust PSP? I loved the game back on my Amiga, and on PS3 PSN, so I'd love to get this. I even vitied the developer once, but totally forget what they said about a boxed copy...

Not sure... I saw rumors about it a while ago (I think Play-Asia had a listing for it?), but not confirmed and nothing recently.

Downloaded Super Stardust thanks to the sale. If you don't have a ps3 or absolutely HAVE to have the game portable it might be worth it, but it doesn't really look to offer unique content that Super Stardust HD doesn't do better.
