Over Horizon is...

Post by Valkrazhor »

Such an under appreciated shooter.

The music in stage 2 makes me dance around while my ship eats bullets.

Stage 3 with the ice cubes rocks my world.

The fire breathing Pumas in stage 4 are epic.

Plus ship and weapon customization?

Power to the Famicom.

Considering how much a copy goes for these days I wouldn't say it's totally unappreciated.

I agree though, it's an awesome little shmup and one of the Famicom's best - certainly a better effort from Hot.B than Steel Empire.

I bloody love Steel Empire, and now I discover there's a superior Hot-B shooter. And it's an expensive one is it? Balls.

I never new this was by the Steel Empire dev, so I'd rather turned a blind eye to it. Over Horizon is certainly under-appreciated by me. When I have some money, I'll have to give it some of my time...

I'm not 100% sure on price, here are a couple of unboxed ones on ebay though, if that gives some indication:

Steel Empire has its moments, it's just a little too flawed to be a great. Over Horizon is a very tight little Famicom shmup though.

Oh - so it's not Recca priced. When you say it's expensive Skykid, I assume you mean three figures!

I think my love for Steel Empire might be a bit rose tinted...

Ha ha, sorry man - I just meant it's not unappreciated to the point of bargain bucket prices. A mint copy would probably set you back about £50-£60, which is quite a bit for a Famicom title. That is going by ebay though, you could probably find one cheaper from nice forum folk as I did.

Recca is a whole other story - but ebay prices on that are ridiculous, ignore them.

Not a bad little shmup. It always came across like a predecessor to Zero Wing for some reason. There's just something about it that feels similar.

Can't say I like it better than Steel Empire though. SE's visual/aural style and gameplay appeal to me more.

Nothing wrong with Steel Empire, I don't hate the game - it does have undeniable issues though. Over Horizon, taking into consideration the format, is a little more polished around the edges.

My thoughts on Steel Empire:

It looks fun and the music is great. I've been looking for more games where you shoot backwards.

I bought Over Horizon loose in Akihabara for 3,500 YEN. Then again I don't collect CIB Famicom games. It's a pain in the ass because the boxes were so bad to begin with that nearly everyone threw them away. Even in Japan.

Megadrive carts are a different story though. Clam shell cases rock my world.

It's an obscure title to me because I rarely hear people mention it and I've only spotted it a few times in local stores.Hope that someone gives it a shot after reading this thread.

Isn't this composed by Rezon (Masaharu Iwata) and whoever else? Good music.

Your right. 100 points to you. Rezon is the man behind the music.

Great tunes for sure. Especially on stages 2 and 4.

Two situations in Over Horizon that make me turn my Famicom off:

1) I'm in stage 2. I'm shooting the ice blocks on and they refuse to move. WHY? The screen catches up to me. I die.

2) I'm in the zone with my laser. Suddenly a homing power-up of doom pops in front of my ship and I run into it. Now I'm no longer in the zone. I die.

Awesome game, it was in many ways the NES/FC equivalent to R-Type. Albeit somewhat easier.

I did not realize this game was actually worth a bit of money...I got mine in Kyoto for like 600 yen!

It's really fun. The customization options are a little weird to deal with when starting the game off, but once you actually get going you realize just how nice it is.

Nifty little game.

Cool music, indeed! Sounds like that Stage 2 music is using some of the same "instruments" that Sunsoft liked to use in some of their NES titles, specifically Batman and Journey to Silius. I'm sure I've played this game once or twice via emulation, but it's been so long I don't remember. Looks fun though!

By the way, Wikipedia and MobyGames say this game was co-developed by Daisuke Amaya / Pixel of Cave Story fame, but I wasn't able to find any confirmation of that out there; anyone has a clue about their source?

I was actually referred to this a while back by Kaiser for NES shmups that weren't complete crap and it happens to me one of my favourites along with The Guardian Legend and Recca. :D

That refers to the old company described here. The link on Wikipedia is an understandable mistake.

You can get a NES repro version of this game for $25. Can't tell you where as that would be a violation of forum rules.

Great game, I need to play it more.

You wouldn't be referring to me would you? 8)

It's been a rather popular repro. Not a difficult shmup, but the weapon edit is fun to play with.

Just 1CCed this baby, using edited options and weapons. Looped a bit during the last stage, exploiting the ship's warps. That was a wise thing to do, because the final boss drained all my extra lives...

Score is 1.111.410

Not bad considering the latter half of the stages were completely new to me until tonight. :)

Interesting. So this is the company behind the US NES Fantasy Zone port.

Wow, somehow missed this one growing up. The ice stage looks pretty interesting! I like the mechanic of knocking the bricks around and having to slide in between them. And the boss is pretty nice too (too bad he doesn't change more/takes so long to beat, but still, system limitations and all--pretty interesting stuff).
Making an action platformer with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .
