Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
Hello everyone!
Are there any decent, high-res rips of the various backgrounds and sprites from cave/raizing shmups, ideally the newer cave games like ketsui or doj? It's probably pretty difficult to rip stuff like that from a pcb, but I might be wrong...
Slateman's site has some decent sprites kicking around from DDP and the like, but there aren't any backgrounds and it's not really a complete collection at all. Peacefuldeath.net has a few things here and there but they're all pretty low-res and jpg artifacty.
I figure there has to be stuff floating around for MAME-emulated games, at least. If not spriterips, at least some sort of decent windows tool for ripping image data from ROMs would be nice. Cheers, mates!

Re: Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
You might have already checked there, but I think Cave actually has some backgrounds and sprites up on its official site for a few of its games. Not sure if they'd be high-quality enough for you, though.
Re: Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
One afternoon I was so bored, I created a collage of all of ESPGaluda's background graphics that could be found on Cave's webpage. Let me know if you're interested in it, they're not very high-res though.
How can I rip sprites from a game using MAME? I'd love to cut out some Garegga/Batrider sprites and I know there must be a function (Ket skimmed through what seemed to be a catalog of every sprite in the game on his online channel).

I think the character test mode in Batrider shows all the sprites in the game. You could use that and take screenshots of all the sprites you want. Takes a bit of work, but I can't think of another way.
Re: Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
Ripping stuff from a PCB means not only dumping the PCB but finding where is the GFX data inside the dump, and transform it, if it's not raw bitmap data (eg compressed, encrypted, tiles or whatever).
It sounds very complicated.
A friend of mine wanted to rip sprites from Twinkle Star Sprites.
For that purpose he digged into MAME source code and compiled his own version (for private usage...)
He's a talented programmer but he isn't into emulators programming at all, so, solid C skills should be enough.
I'm not sure his ripping utility would work for other systems than MVS. I'll ask him next time I see him on MSN. Even if that's the case, I can't guarantee he'd be okay with giving away his source code.

Garegga's PCB test menu lets you browse every stage's background, from bottom to top (even the hangar from the takeoff sequence). Not ideal, but I guess you could piece together a map from screenshots.

Stages 1 through 3 are available on this site in PNG format:

*edit*
Make that stages 1 and 2... the stage 3 link doesn't work and simply swapping out the 2 for a 3 in the image name doesn't return anything from the site.

Ripping BGs from the PS2 version of DDP DOJ and ESPgaluda may be possible, if you can figure out a way to hide everything except the background.
Re: Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
Not yet... ripping backgrounds in Garegga with the MAP TEST function is made difficult because of the backgrounds being made up of numerous parallax layers and I can't figure out how to turn them off.
I did notice that someone made a sprite sheet for Sea Horse from Ketsui DS, but obviously it's not as high-quality as the arcade board.

I know RAINE supports turning off/displaying only certain layers.

Re: Cave/Raizing background / sprite rips?
I wrote a program which rips out all the TIM2 files from Ibara and Mushihimesama on the PS2.
Only snag is you need a program to read TIM2 successfully. I know xnview is supposed to
be able to do it but last time I tried it, it had trouble with alpha channels.
I anyone knows of a batch converter which will convert TIM2 successfully that would be brilliant.
Espgaluda seems to use a different format than TIM2 if anyone knows which
format it uses please LMK.
